does anyone have any tips or exercises on how to synchronise the left and right hand while speed picking? or just practice and it will come naturally? thanks!
Work slowly (obviously). Lift your left hand off of the fretboard each time you pick a note. Only have your finger on the frets when you're actually picking the note. This way if you do it too soon, you'll get a ringing sound and if you do it too slow you'll get a dull muted sound if you know what I mean.
Work on it slow and slowly increase the tempo. Also you should work with an metronome. Start at a very slow tempo that you have no problem with picking every note clean and than start to play on that tempo for a while. When you really feel comfortable you can increase the tempo. This is the way to train snychronisation
You also should know that this training is a very long process. Speed doesn't come over night. It'S the result of training over a long period of time.

USE A METRONOME! Its the key ingredient when learning to play fast. Always start out very slow, then build speed bit by bit.

Is it neccesary to slowly increase the tempo of the metronome over time, or will playing slowly at the same speed work fine for building synchronization? It's just I'm never sure when I should increase the speed or by how much as I'm always worried that I'm rushing.
Increase it over time or your speed won;t progress ... but always keep it so that you can comfortably and cleanly play what you are practicing or you are teaching yourself to play badly! Its fine to occasionally have a go at playing a lot faster to see what you can do, but staying inside your capabilities and increasing the speed when you can play at that faster speed cleanly is they key.
I'd add that if you can't play the line at least ten times without pausing, cleanly and without mistakes then you are not ready to up the tempo.

Get a steel string acoustic and force yourself to practice. In one week of 3h per day practice seesions return to you electric and be amazed!
How much should I increase the tempo by when I decide it's time to speed up the metronome a bit?
I think a lot of people advise 10 bpm. Personally I go up 2 bpm, takes longer but I get to know what speed I'm comfortable at and where its breaking down. Try 10 anyway, if you're happy with that that's fine, if not less.
Cheers,
Tony
