Hey guys, well I've been practicing standing up recently, and I have to say, it's a lot more fun than practicing sitting down and hurting my back(I tend to hunch when sitting).

One problem has popped up though, my strap broke! Almost killed my guitar.

So now I need a new one, and I have no idea what to look for, all I know is that I need a strap that won't slide around on my shoulder, it needs to help hold my guitar in place when I play, if that makes sense.

Are there any good brands in particular I should be looking at?

I always buy the suede leather straps, the wide ones (approx 3 inches) the weight of the guitar is more even on my shoulder then and the strap doesnt feel like its cutting in, they seem to last a long time, one of mine is approx 8 years old now and still good as it always was, made by Levys.

I`d also recomend a decent set of strap locks so when you take the strap on and off your not weakening and widening the strap button holes

If your guitar is heavy I suggest a large strap, cushioned is better, very comfortable! Leathers strap are good but I love animals so...I suggest a dimarzio nylon strap, military grade, unbreakable!! Plus I suggest you the use of a strap lock to avoid other slipping problems! Good luck!

i use the planet waves joe satriani signature straps cause imo they just look cool... and i haven´t had any problem so far while playing.....

I use Dimarzio nylon with strap locks on three of my guitars,and there isnt a chance in hell of them coming off!You can swing the guitar over your shoulder all day long if you wanted,and it would still hold out

My LP has a normal strap,but it sturdy too

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. I now know what to looks for, I'm most likely going for a wide leather strap, and Dimarzio, Levys, and Planet Waves look like quality straps.

I have a nylon strap, and it moves around on my shoulder too much, even though my guitar is close to 10 lbs. This is opposed to the strap helping to hold the guitar still. Do all nylon straps do this?

Either way, I'm probably gonna get a wide, leather strap, possibly padded, I think that would suit me best. And I'm definitely going to pick up some straplocks, guitars dropping is not cool.

I think most go for a wide leather strap. I don't use strap locks as I have no need for them. A guitar dropping keeps you on your toes

I used a nylon strap for years and I thought it was ok, but then I got a leather strap and it's so much more comfortable! I'll never go back to the nylon one

haha. Thats what I thought you meant with your tip of the day in the instructors area. "Practice sitting down and standing up" or something like that. I can just see everybody just standing up and sitting down and worrying whether they are doing it correctly or not

I suggest getting a wide leather strap as well, but try not to get a cheap one. And when buying always look for the part where strap buttons should go - this should be of high quality, and the strap will always break here. I broke 2 straps this way, but on first one I did some heavy leather reinforcement so it served me well until I sold it with one of my previous guitars.
Also it is good to buy a strap locks, they are fairly cheap and you are rest assured that guitar will never slip off.

Lots of people already said that but I will reinforce.

A good leather strap. It is a very good insurance against guitar falls. If you invest on a good guitar, this is a must!

I have a couple of thick leather leather straps also:

They are great - in general, leather is the way to go, apart from anything else, the slots for the strap buttons are a lot stiffer and way more secure as a result - no need for strap locks.
