GMC Forum _ Practicing (Muris) _ 8th Vs 16th

Posted by: leedbreak Aug 21 2007, 11:11 AM

When one sets out to play 16th notes at say 90 BPM is it ok just to play them as 8ths at 180. I know I do better with a louder click at every 8 notes instead of one every 16 notes.
Same with triplets I seem to improve faster if I play as below
Click(1), 2, 3
tap(1), 2, 3
tap(1), 2, 3
tap(1), 2, 3
example: Working 1/8 note triplets at twice the speed to achieve 16th triplets. I just seem to learn faster if there is a click or tap at the start of each triplet.

Just like on your alternating lesson I have been working the triplet as 8th notes just at a higher speed

Do you feel this is a bad habit?

Very good question Jason, and I'm pleased that you asked. smile.gif

You are right,it is easier to play with click on start of each triplet or every group of two 8th notes.
I guess you're having some problems with 16th and 16th triplets at the moment,
so it's ok to practice it in 8th for now.(double speed and you need to play same thing, that's true)

My only suggestion is NOT to use this routine for too long.
Because one day you'll get into band,a song will be in about 80 BPM
and you will MUST play 16th or 16th triplets.
Asking your drummer "mate, give me double time" ,hmm...sounds bit odd smile.gif
