GMC Forum _ Bands and Guitarists _ Favourite Solo

Posted by: Duncan Jan 24 2008, 01:40 AM

I don't know if you guys have ever had any topics like this before, and if you have , I apologise. I know it can be annoying when noobs come in and start topics that keep reappearing. I just thought though with the variety in members and music tastes it would be interesting to maybe find out about some solos I have never heard.

I shall start the ball rolling:

Twilightning - Riot Race:

I like this solo because I find it nice and slow and the little fast run at the end just makes the entire thing amazing. Plus the vocal melody and keys after run on well from it.

Dragonforce - Valley Of The Damned (outro solo):

With all the fast stuff these guys are pulling out this solo always stands out. It seems to be the only one with any feeling in it, and just goes to prove (along with Trail Of Broken Hearts solo) that the two guitarists can write something that isn't fast. Also with the poorness of their latest album, it is always nice to go back to the demo, and first album and remember how good they were.

Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge:

This band are very hit and miss for me, but this solo definitely does it for me. Melodic and fast.

How about you guys?

An Intensely melodic solo that really kicks the song up a notch, and blends beautifully with the accompaniament, a total song experience

Tender Surrender - Steve Vai

Well the whole song is really a solo - it starts slow, takes you to the heights of virtuoso passion then slows you down again - exhausting!

I completely agree with this. The entire song is pretty incredible. So much emotion when he plays it as well.

This one isnt about guitar at all, but I remember when I first heard the pop song ' The Voice' by John Farnham, I thought it was pretty amazing that someone had the idea to use bagpipes for the solo.

Porcupine Tree - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU-y_AR7eUo (second solo)

It's just so.. Awesome! It sounds false but it really fits, and it creates the most amazing feeling ever.

Agalloch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYMaIzFq1Iw

Melodic, technical, everything. It fits the song perfectly and well, that's all I can say.

Agalloch - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN4AxskpSAE

An acoustic solo, and.. Just perfect. I love it.

Opeth - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxaFANthouM&feature=related

It's so extremely tasteful, and well beautiful, can't describe it better..

Opeth - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9It1jKPgsc - last solo

The ultimate Peter Lindgren experience. I love all his solo work, but this is my favourite, it's amazing, and when it reaches it's climax at the end.. wow.

Last but not least:

Sörskogen - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsKQuKgy1H4

I really can't comment it. This solo is perfect, and so is the song. Mikael Åkerfeldt + Dan Swanö = win

Well, I can clearly see that you are into shred solos there, so maybe it's just not your style.. Have you heard some of the early and faster solos though? like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIt_CsSARKk&feature=related for instance? The solo is about 5.45 in the song.

I can't pick one O_o Thats like asking favorite song. Favorite band I can't even do, and most bands have many awesome solos. I can maybe do top 5 favorite bands, but not solos.

Yea that is a pretty good solo, first time I have heard it too. The Opeth albums I have mostly have slow to medium speed pentatonic solos in them. I can't stand the pentatonic scale used in a metal or rock context, good for blues, it sounds extremely annoying over the heavy progressions. Regular minor, major, harmonic minor are much much much much much more suited for the genre IMO. I love Opeth and their riffs, just not a big fan of the solos.

I would have to say that EVH's Eruption is probably one of the best. George Lynch's Mr Scary ranks pretty high on the list as well.

The Legacy - Testament
Cemetary Gates - Pantera
This Love - Pantera
Rust - Black Label Society

Posted by: whammysam Jan 27 2008, 01:34 AM

Another solo I just thought of is in the song Wait, by White Lion because it is on the whole rather complicated and it has a couple of funny changes in there too. Nothing our man Pavel couldnt pick the bones out of I'm sure. laugh.gif

Posted by: whammysam Jan 27 2008, 01:45 AM

P.s By funny, I mean peculiar.

Posted by: Juan M. Valero Jan 27 2008, 08:46 AM

ufff, there are lot of great solos, but I like specially the solo from this guitar players: Vai, Loureiro, Friedman, Eklundh, Govan and some more biggrin.gif

Posted by: Vinicitur Jan 27 2008, 10:14 AM

If I'd have to pick only one it would be Jake E. Lee's solo on Bark at the Moon.

Posted by: hostel Jan 27 2008, 11:16 AM

Bullet For My Valentine - The Poison - 1:45 - 2:05
