Ok so this is voted for by many big bands from the metal and rock genre. It is much better than the Rolling Stone List. I got this list from Blabbermouth.net and it is appearing in the new issue of Roadie Crew (#112) (http://www.roadiecrew.net)

Hetfield is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever. That is undeniable but obviously Paul Gilbert is a way better lead player.

Top 20 except maybe Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, Marty Friedman, Satch, and Jason Becker; are still pretty wrongly placed, I think. If you took out everyone in the top 20 and put all those in there in that order, with John Petrucci, I think it would be a great list, but too be honest I don't see how guitarists who have played ONLY open/power chord riffs, and pentatonic based solos (i.e. Angus Young) get ahead of guitarists who have done not only that better, but 100x as much (i.e. John Petrucci).

Once again though, I think the list is just all personal bias, but they have to be, so I don't know. I may never understand why people think great musicians are great guitar players. So Ozzy wrote some amazing, and popular songs, so Randy HAS to be near the top, when he wasn't even that great.

And like GuitarMan said, I don't understand how James Hetfield can get in there with his predictable Powerchord chug chug chug chug Powerchord chug chug chug chug. I enjoy Metallica's music, but once again, this isn't a list where I pick what band writes my favorite songs. Dave Mustaine smokes him like no tomorrow in terms of playing ABILITY, which you would think is what these lists should be about.

I prefer Angus Young to be honest to John Petrucci and many do. He is an incredibly influential guitarist and to be influential you have to be good. You have to remember what era they came from also remember.

I think its also more about who wrote more memorable songs.
Just because you write complex songs does not mean they are amazing.....AC/DC have some of the most amazing songs...based on simple stuctures..

As far as randy Rhoads was concerned or even James Hetfield they are good at wht they did especially randy i mean at the time he was quite amazing and the solo's he has written for MR crowley, crazy train etc are some of the best....

People will get more and more technical as time progress'es just when u think of this guy is S***, some other guy will come with even more complex work, but only a few have sustained (no pun intended ) long enough.

And just like organisedconfusion said, heck even i would take ac/dc songs then dream theatre anyday....

Then again opinions differ...

Hi there!

Ive seen the Rolling Stones-list, but they seem to be a bit too traditionalists (if you check the 500 hundred best songs ever, more than a half were written in the sixties and the very beginning of the seventies.)

This list is much more pleasant, however, i would be delighted if someone could explain to me the keyword of this whole business: "best". Someone who is the fastest? The most influential and who made thousands of boys and girls pick up the guitar? The one who wrote the best licks/lines/riffs/themes/songs etc? The most sophisticated guitarist? The guitarist of an influential band? Someone who has the most recognizable style? The best solo guitarist? Or the best rythm guitarist?

If such a list is created to represent a handful of guitarist who are worth to be listened to, then why ranking? Why not in alphabetical order? And there would be Vai, Steve; Vaughan, Stevie Ray; and i could browse the whole list and heavy-shred guitarists would follow for example some really classical players, flawless legato licks would just be before the raw and dusty blues melodies etc.

I know its always fun to argue about who is the best and to put the well-know masters and idols on a list to compete like in an arena, but it is a bit childish. "Best Guitarists Of ALL TIME" "Best Guitarist In The UNIVERSE" C'mon...
