Quick Apogee Jam test

http://www.apogeedigital.com/products/jam.php

I bought an Apogee Jam recording interface. 98 euros.
I have used this Line6 Toneport usb interface for recording and I thought to replace it. I was looking Apogee and Presonus stuff and got interested in this Apogee's Jam model. It's tiny, cheap and it supposed to be "PureDIGITAL instrument connection for pristine sound quality" like the ad said. And You can plug it in your iPhone or a iPad !!

You can see in the pictures that it's really small. Handy if you like to practice in a small room or an other place.

Very simple connections too. Cable in and out.
It has gain control knob. You can dial in the level of your guitar.

There's 3 light indicators:

Blue - Device is connected but not ready.
Green - Device is connected, ready and working with your software.
Red - Imput signal is loud. I.e. clipping.

Here's dry sample of Apogee Jam & Toneport. Tested in Reaper DAW.

Here's with a distortion.

Bonus points for guessing where the riff is from.

I wanted to try this with an iPhone so I downloaded free version of an Amplitube app and registered it for a free distortion pedal. Of course you can buy lots of pedals and amps from an app store.

I tested it only a little - the sound is not that good but you can use it for practicing and it has basic drum/metronome inside.

Results:

Well I didn't hear so much difference between these two. Only thing you can add more gain in Jam. But It's really handy when you're in small room or travelling (you need iPad or An iPhone. ) So recommended.

Funny stuff:

I plugged Jam first in to my iPhone and tested it. Then I tried unplug the cable but It didn't come off. I tried with more force - No, it was stuck.
Then I realized what if… and voilà !! You have to press from the side's of the cable to get it off !! smile.gif

Hey Ville! Congrats on the new purchase man - but let me get this straight this Apogee device acts as an external soundboard in which you can plug your guitar which then goes straight into the phone/ipad, correct?

The tones sound pretty good for such a tiny thing smile.gif

Hey Cosmin and Gabriel. You can use it with Mac/Pc and iPhone or iPad.

Like I mentioned in 1st post - I run it though Reaper with GR5/Ezmix/Eq's etc.

And yes it's really tiny smile.gif

Yes, it works with an iPod Touch.

I use a Jam myself. Without a doubt, it has the best A-D converter you can get for under $100. If you're using a software amp simulator like Overloud TH1/2 or Amplitube, it's the ideal interface to use. If you're using an iPhone/iPad amp simulator, like AmpKit or GarageBand, it's more expensive than an interface that plugs into the headphone jack, but the sound quality is much better.

Nice!! Thats a KILLER interface. It works on mobile devices and on PC or MAC. Really high quality especially for a device that portable. I"m considering one myself for the OVERLOUD Live Rig I'm planning to build.
