GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Is Your Music Taste Like A Religion?

Hello there Gmcers, I want to bring a subject that's taboo like some kind of religious thing. And that my friends is your music taste, yes your music taste. I notice time and time again in this forum and other forums that people struggle to music writing and even just jamming along to some of the simplest music progressions. I am pretty sure you don't eat the same thing everyday. So why listen to the same music over and over again, So in essence you just learning one thing, which is the reason for your musical struggles.

The reason for your musical struggles? simple you have shut your own door to expanding your "Vocabulary" Yes your music vocabulary, which reflects on your phrasing and solos and song writing. Some of us are so "hardcore" metal or other genres(Just like religious people that have a fix mindset) that you just don't see beyond that. Let me explain, music is a language and just like any other language, you must try to master it. You probably don't remember when you started talking, But I am pretty sure you remember school right? What happen in school? i tell you what happened, you were given books and homework to practice right? but what kind of stuff was that. They were very easy "Words" for you to write and say over and over again. Which some of you might call "baby words" , Those words were the foundation of what you are able to speak now.

The point that am trying to make is simple you have to learn how to Crawl and Walk" before you can "Run". Take the time to learn basic music theory like: tempos, scales,intervals,modes,chords,etc. You will be surprise how many people don't even know what chords are in the key of C major, or what notes go on the scale of C, or even don't understand the intervals between the notes on that scale. Why they don't know? , they want to sound like their favorite guitar artist or band. So they skip the whole learning the basics and just jump right into running phase which is cool if you are trying to impress you friends by shredding and such, But you don't even know what scale you were using or what chords were on the progression . All this comes to life the moment you try to write a song. Then it will all hit you like a ton of bricks, when you get stuck on the same riff for all eternity.

The majority of great guitar players this days started playing simple music styles, They didn't come out of their mother womb shredding and chugging. They started with popular music, blues, rock etc. But then, after having a pretty good foundation the move on to other more complex music genres.

Just remember you cant build a house starting from the top, as always you have to build from the ground up. Starting with the "Foundation". Just take the time to build a solid Music foundation, this will reward you on a near future, trust me. You will be able to come up with a rift and then be able to build upon on it, because now you can find on what "Key" it is, so then you can expand it by using other notes and intervals on that key or even use a different "Mode" for that key.

TOTALY, but i'm not closed to other form , i like play jazz standart, some blues, but i never listen this, except exceptions

Those are certainly Metal This clip might give some perspective. It's a metalish version of a very NON METAL tune by the same folks Keeping and open mind is key. Otherwise, ones music and ones playing can become a bit one sided.

That is the point i was trying to make, trying to be versatile guitarist. that's why i posted the first video on my first post, so you can see that even a full fledged metal guys can also play some nice ballads. but i guess i didn't made myself to clear.

It's a very important point Well said. Ideally, a guitarist should be well rounded enough to add flavor from a variety of styles in to what's being played
