I love celtic music and was wondering if anybody knows what makes it so distinctive sounding? Is it using a certain mode or a certain cadence? I would love to hear somebody do an instrumental in this Genre. Thanks for any info and replies. smile.gif

You should check out the Dropkick Murphys! I LOVE this band...they combine traditional Irish music with modern punk/ hard rock...and it sounds killer! They use mandolins, banjos, bagpipes, accordians etc in their music!

I plan to do some lesson on traditional Irish tunes, their music is simply beautiful, like from fairy tales smile.gif

For the listening you can check The Chieftains and The Dubliners smile.gif

And my favorite Irish rock/folk/punk/something band is The Pogues biggrin.gif

Well scale-wise Pentatonics, Dorian and Mixolydian are the most commonly used scales in celtic music. Instruments like the bagpipes, fiddle, accordian, tin whistle, and bouzuki are some of the most used instruments in celtic music. In celtic dance music the songs are nearly always made up of a lot of fast, running, 8th or 16th notes. There are a lot of types of celtic songs that don't have these fast, running notes though.

One common thing in celtic music is to play with a major 7th for most of a piece then at the end use a dominant seventh. The dominant/minor seventh is used quite a lot in celtic music, especially in the chord progressions of minor songs. Very quick on beat grace notes are also a common technique in celtic music. They are called scotch snaps.

Temorary modulations to relative modes are also quite common.

I find the best way to find out about a style is to learn some songs from it.
