I kid you not, when I really started working on learning the different scales, I played a lot of Johnny Cash and just expanded the solos.

What scales does he often use?
I like some of Cash's stuff so I wouldn't mind learning it. |

Ah that's cool.
A nice creative way to learn the scales, shifting between them, AND improvise. |

I do play what I like, but I would like to play some stuff that reinforces the stuff I have been learning here on my way to becoming a shreddie!

I do play what I like, but I would like to play some stuff that reinforces the stuff I have been learning here on my way to becoming a shreddie! Try listening to Randy Rhoads stuff while he was with Ozzy, not ridicilously fast and really sweet. You could listen to Zakk aswell performing Rhoads solos, he honors them well Jake E Lee has a good school example solo in Bark at the moon. I guess that would be all Pentatonic scale and Aeolian mode. Rhoads solos (fex Crazy train and Mr Crowley) shows alternate picking, tapping.. neat stuff really to play. Bark at the moon has a real nice run down the neck in the end of the solo (Aeolian mode?) and the song ends with some semi-fast hammer on/off patterns. Yngwie Malmsteens "Far beyong the sun" is good stuff to practice. It starts with an easy intro, followed by some speed picking and when the sweeping somes in... I'm lost But I mean, just play it as far as you can then try the stuff you get stuck at.. practice that part over and over again. Play the entire song again, get stuck and practice over and over again, again. Good luck! -------------------- My bands homepage

Thanks for the tips everyone.
I love Metallica so I'll take a look at their stuff. Are there any songs you would recommend for a newbie, Dan? |
