Well, since this is your lab tongue.gif let's see what we shall scheme about in it laugh.gif

Tell me everything I need to know about your goals/ past experience, regarding guitar playing and musicianship!

Cosmin

Hey Cosmin,

Well, I am from the Netherlands and I play the guitar for about 4 years intensive now.
I learned to play guitar through youtube, justinguitar etc.. and now at GMC !

I play in a progressive metal band called Infinitum : https://www.facebook.com/Infinutum
My goals are perfect vibrato and bendings ( the person that inspires me the most in this is marcus lavendell ).

I think there is a huge gap between my guitar playing and theory that needs to be filled, but there is so much to find on
the internet that I sometimes can't find the motivation for it.

Greetz from the Netherlands

Howdy Marc! So, shall we focus on articulation and applied theory? smile.gif

I would very much like to hear you play some bending/ vibrato oriented stuff, so i could know where we are and then we can start exploring and learning together wink.gif

What say you?

Here it is

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 27 2012, 03:42 PM

Howdy Marc! The take is generally good, but you tend to be a little harsh with vibrato and bending by rushing them a bit and thus, with bending, going a bit over the pitch.

I would like you to try and tackle this one: http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/The-Voice-Of-Your-Guitar/ it is FULL of little bends and articulation elements which will require a lot of attention smile.gif It's all about the details wink.gif

what do you think - shall we start with this and in parallel analyze the theoretical context on which it is based?

Cosmin

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 27 2012, 03:46 PM

Hell yeah, I am on it wink.gif

Awesomeness wink.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Jul 2 2012, 10:19 AM

Well' I think I got it but the intonation I think of my guitar is weird
when I play my D string open it is in tune, but at the 12th fret its higher.
I play trough an rg550.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 2 2012, 10:25 AM

Uh, that sounds like an intonation problem all the way sad.gif I think you should take it to a tech so it should be adjusted!

Posted by: snackajacks Jul 2 2012, 11:28 AM

even though, Ill try to record it this week. may sound a little false on one string..

Is it cool that I record it acoustic or unplugged electric, because my x3 power supply is lost.
and yes my guitar is still false intonated. Maybe I can record direct in with my cable, hmm ill try something right now !

can't get it to rec without my dear x3, my line in is laggy. maybe we can do some theory in the meanwhile ^^, ?
I am trying to get my cable sunday ( think I left in in rehearsal room ) otherwise I need to buy a new one.

Ahoy Marc! No problem man, it's good to be flexible and get to other things while waiting for the right conditions for recording smile.gif

What would you like to discuss about theory? Let's start with your most ardent questions in this field and we shall develop from that point wink.gif

I would like to make a clean start because I have heard lots of different methods concerning theory, I already know small pieces of the puzzle but I would like to start all over again so maybe it would make sense then biggrin.gif
thanks

I would start with understanding the major scale - what do you know about the major scale so far?

I know its the main scale of everything, and have tried to learn it with modes (?!?) I guess.
though I can't master it. I think over the couple of years I play I have tried to learn it like a 100 times.
but never in a clean way.

Well, the idea is that you have to understand its structure first

C D E F G A B C

C-D - whole step
D-E - whole step
E-F - half step
F-G - whole step
G-A - whole step
A-B - whole step
B-C - half step

You must first be able to internalize the sounds of the scale before playing it in various contexts smile.gif

Here's what I suggest:

1) Localize all the C notes on the neck
2) Play and sing in the same time all the intervals above starting from each of the C notes you have found!
3) Start your metronome at about 70 BPM - for each whole note, play and sing a C note randomly on the neck. Do this exercise with all the notes of the C major scale smile.gif Raise speed once you are getting faster at recognizing them!

You have 3 days biggrin.gif

Well I am applying this do-re-mi thing to all the C's that I find and that is working. takes a lot of time to actually remember it
because of that stupid b string. otherwise I had a nice pattern that I could apply.

I understand the idea of scales now, I am only questioning how I can remember all those notes, or isn't this necesary ?

Marc, the only way in which you will remember them in such a way that you can use them is by playing and being a bit conscious about what you are playing. For instance, you can try and spot notes in the phrases that you play and memorize the notes and the way they sound against the harmonic context smile.gif

There are a lot of ways, but in time we shall talk about as many as possible.

For instance, I tried to parallel sing all the notes in a solo so that I may train myself into being able to easily express what I hear in my head

Let's take things easy and progress will come up for certain wink.gif

Ahoy Marc! Timing is great and the bends reach the pitch pretty nicely, but take care at the quirky bends at the beginning of the first part wink.gif and the vibrato should be wider and not so aggressive - let the note breathe first and then vibrate to offer it sustain!

Good start mate!

Hey Marc! I can notice the fact that you smoothed out the take as an ensemble and I also guess that you tried to interpret some of it wink.gif The quirky bends were still left out - check out my take and try to play along with it, especially in the first part smile.gif

I am also guessing that you haven't managed to record the second part, right? The track gets jammed in the middle smile.gif

Congratulations, my friend smile.gif Shred is a thing which is achievable through practice, but emotional playing, is being able to be yourself and put your heart out there, while making people believe what you have to say smile.gif It is harder, just because, being yourself and being good at it is harder than learning something. Also I am still figuring out how to get a descent tone on my x3 or guitarrig, any tips smile.gif ?

Ill be back cool.gif

Hey Marc! The tone is very good smile.gif There are still glitches with the bends here and there mate!

What would you say about trying to record against my take? smile.gif In that way you will see what's on and what's off, hmm? smile.gif

Shall we give it one more try?

Posted by: snackajacks Aug 8 2012, 09:16 AM

indeed, I am currently working on move your little finger from Piotr, and an alternate excersice from maharzan. Maybe you can go further with the bending and vibrato stuff because I find that really hard to master.

Hehe, alright Marc smile.gif How about trying this one?

by really hot I mean everything above 35 degrees celcius, The heat isn't the problem most of the time , but the density of the water in the air is extremely high when it is hot in here. I have been in Egypt and there it was 45 degrees. But it didn't feel that hot because of the lower water density, Also yesterday could have been the hottest day in the netherlands since 1994 ( year I was born ). Yesterday it was around 38 degrees.

I went to a festival yesterday in the heat. Luckily they had a parachute hanging above the main square of the event. and there were showers set up. Thats where I saw Anneke van Giersbergen biggrin.gif

Yes I am working on multiple things now :

Neoclassical beginner solo - I am using the tips the instructors gave me to improve it.
Move your Finger - For my alternate picking
Gary Moore inspired bendings - For my bendings biggrin.gif

This will have me hooked for at least another week, But I will upload from now on first here before I post it to the Rec, So you can help

Soo, after my x3 died I bought a boss gt3 and I am working on my new guitar atm.

Instead of playing I would like to focus on theory. I would like to start at the very start again.
I have downloaded the GMC theory book. After playing for four years I have learned only parts of the theory and I just want to restart to get everything connected.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 5 2013, 08:22 AM

Hey Marc, I guess that Wednesday's v-chat session sparked something in you, hasn't it? smile.gif

Yes I was really impressed with both your chat and Darius his chat also made a lot of sense. I just really want to get theory down to get me motivated to write own songs/riffs/solos.

But starting at the start. I have learned some scales over the neck, I dont even know what Ive learned, I ussually play the blues scale.
So I was thinking of starting with the major scale en then work with these modes. But I have no clue where to start. So just treat me as I have never heard of theory and I will be fine biggrin.gif .

Also everyone says I should start off with something else, so I prefer sticking to one method and thats yours.
Since this is the end of my schoolblock I can finally get active again here. :'D

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 6 2013, 05:56 PM

Awesome Cosmin, I am doing it as of now. I will report all my progress !.
Thank you very much for the video !
wohoo

As I am practicing I am seeing the a pattern when I start at C on every string except for the B string because this one is tuned different.
My question is : why did they decide to tune the B string different in relation to the other strings. Does it have a practical use ?

On the offside , how do you reach the high notes with your voice , my voice can't reach this high. My voice just snaps.

Video posted below

I just made a quick reply, The quality of the build in camera is really low, Have my logitech at my own place ( home at weekend )
But I decided to learn all the positions of the C notes tonight. I didnt include my singing haha, trust me, I am doing it tongue.gif

So I started at the C at different spots and worked up untill the next C.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 7 2013, 08:54 PM

Oy mate! I think you have started well biggrin.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 7 2013, 09:04 PM

Hey Thanks again for the video, It is really motivating when someone is talking directly using a video. Anyways. I remember the C notes of the first 12 frets. ( ofcourse the next 12 are the same, but its a mental thing ). And I am currently doing what I did yesterday but I now from the C going back to the lower C. So downwards.

I am also trying to combine it as you say in the video from C D E F G A B -> Next C on fretboard and play further, Next C etc. Untill I did most of the C's untill the 12th fret. I am going to make a video response on Monday or Tuesday cuz I think it is cool to do videoreports instead of long typing.

I must say that I have never been this motivated to learn this as I am now. Thanks man !

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 8 2013, 09:14 AM

Glad you like this man biggrin.gif Well, as I said, baby steps will take you to the moon wink.gif

Looking forward to see your video and by all means, sing mate smile.gif Don't be shy!

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 9 2013, 09:45 AM

So today I have my last "real" examday at school , just a practical thing, and then its time for guitarrr.
Yesterday I repeated the excercise that I did on Saturday + Sunday.

I got my Webcam working, only need to get a way to record the sound properly. Maybe ill go to a audiostore after school.
So I have made a routine out of it.

I forgot to mention that I am also worked on this lesson for about 2 months now. Since my pink used to be really weak :

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/move_your_little_finger!/

I will try to record something biggrin.gif

So here is a take of the lesson ( Its work in progress XD )
As you can hear I missed some notes, really want to get this one perfect.

So this one is shot with the new webcam and the build in mic

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 10 2013, 08:53 AM

Hey mate! If you could solve the sound clipping when recording with the cam, it would be great - otherwise everything looks good and I can see what you are doing very clearly.

My advice for this piece: Slow down!

You can't take it at that speed yet and you need to focus on the following:

- have the same strength in your attack regardless of what fingers you are using - that's the whole purpose of the lesson, right? smile.gif
- timing - it must be perfect!
- no more missed notes wink.gif

Let's hear a take at 75% of the actual speed focusing on these two aspects, shall we?

Cosmin

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 10 2013, 10:34 AM

Yess, working on that. In the meantime I am getting the C notes in the area after the 12th fret and combine the C's all over the fretboard

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 10 2013, 08:39 PM

Alright mate! Let me know when you are ready wink.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 10 2013, 08:57 PM

update on the singing , I was doing Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley and the thing is that if I sing loud enough, then my voice gets some kind of gain/power that I can not get when singing at a lower volume.

I can reach way more notes when singing out loud instead of humping along. I am not really comfortably at singing , so I am trying to get out of my comfort zone.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 11 2013, 07:41 AM

Hey Marc smile.gif It's normal, because your muscles and your body, are working with you - the more back muscle power you put into your singing, the more louder you can get wink.gif

I will shoot a video for you and show yo ua secret power gaining technique when singing biggrin.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 11 2013, 08:32 AM

biggrin.gif In the meantime I am continuing on those C notes and getting the "move your little finger " lesson on 75% with the notes sounding more clear an evenly attack across all fingers.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 11 2013, 09:51 AM

It is also important to record yourself, simply for the sake of doing it and then observe what you are doing smile.gif Look at it as you would look in a mirror - when you will like what you see, it means it's good smile.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 11 2013, 10:19 AM

Btw I found something awesome by watching myself on that video I noticed my thumb, So I thought, lets put that thing behind the neck. and it makes a looot of difference and it is way more comfortable to play. See you at the videochat tonight smile.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 11 2013, 09:52 PM

So here is the idea I had over the progression that I had made.

It was played with the progression as backingtrack but its almost unhearable.
For completeness here is the link to the original vid :

I was thinking about using effects on both the pattern on the progression and the progression itself but Ill add that flavour when I have all my parts together. I am also thinking about a chorus. I want it to have some kind of twist in it. oh and I did not even mention adding a second guitar that plays the part higher. Got a lot of ideas. I wrote them all down and I will wait for your advice to guide me in this epic journey to songwriting.

Now it has really become a secret guitar laboratory

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 12 2013, 09:41 AM

Yes , I will record all my ideas this weekend and post them here. Have some things to work out. Again this thing was based on 4 notes and I just added the 2nd note because a lot of songs do that to make it sound more interesting instead of powerchords.

And I was thinking to let that riff come back at the end off the song but instead of going back at the end from 15 - 12 , 10-8 on D
replacing this with 15 - 17 - 12 , 10 - 12 - 8.

youll hear from me in the next couple of days biggrin.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 15 2013, 10:40 PM

Hey Cosmin, got a fast question, what scales can I play over this song.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 16 2013, 09:00 AM

Hey mate - this is a mix between major and minor pentatonic or blues mode

1 2 3 5 6
1 b3 4 b5 5 b7

I recommend these lessons if you want to know how to smoothly blend the two scales in this type of context smile.gif

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/mixing_major_and_minor_boxes_in_blues_part_1/ <- search for the rest of the parts and you won't be sorry! There are 5 of them here at GMC
http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guitar/mixing-major-and-minor-pentatonics/

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 16 2013, 11:16 AM

Awesome, I was just wondering . Since none of the scales I knew sounded really right.
I am shooting some videos with ideas tonight

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 16 2013, 11:40 AM

Very good mate! I'll be on the lookout!

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 23 2013, 06:26 PM

So , as said. Life got a bit complicated the last week. nevertheless I chose to put my thoughts on one thing : guitarplaying.
I just wanted to record Technical difficulties by pg, I basically screwed up and decided to continue recording and somehow I
think its pretty funny what came out at the end. Let me know what you think biggrin.gif

From Thursday on I will have less to worry about and become active biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 24 2013, 08:37 AM

Hey Marc, it looks like it has good timing as an ensemble, but unfortunately I can't hear a lot of the details, simply because the recording quality is not that awesome..

I think there are spots in which you need to practice slower though, because I can hear notes being blurred, even if the sound quality is not that great.

I would like to hear a new recording in which the guitar would be more clear, so, what do you think? smile.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 25 2013, 11:32 AM

as told I am also looking for a new microphone for recording my guitar. are there any mics that you recommend ?
are there special types for recording electric guitar, or should I just buy a usb interface again.

my budget is 50 euros

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 25 2013, 01:28 PM

Mate, if you have a good amp, you may get a mic and I strongly suggest you to have a good read here: http://audio.tutsplus.com/tutorials/recording/10-best-affordable-microphones-for-the-home-studio/

If you don't have an amp and can't crank it up at home, the USB interface will do far greater justice, or you can try an AMT SS20 Preamp like I am using smile.gif All tube wink.gif Do you know it? I've posted reviews around here and my lessons are recorded with it in a proportion of 90%

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 25 2013, 05:13 PM

Well my setup now is that the sound is going through my boss gt-3 to 2 sony monitors that gives me a very nice setup. In my previous setup I had my pod x3 which had a build in usb interface.

I checked the link and I think the the shure sm57 is what I am looking for, I might even record vocals with that , it seems to get great reviews. I am going to the local shop to ask if they sell it and otherwise I am going to look for it secondhand.

See you tonight at the chat !
Edit : missed chat since this was one of the only days that it was actually above 20 degrees in the Netherlands,
So went to grab some beers in town.

Mate, a mic is always handy, but if you don't have a cab to use it with, it's a bit useless in what regards guitar recording. For the voice though, I'd go for the SM58 smile.gif Isn't that the holy grail of affordable vocal microphones? biggrin.gif

No worries mate, although it was a very fun session smile.gif Watch out for the replay and stay tuned for next week - It'd be great to have you there with us smile.gif How's that new take coming along - The technical difficulties one, I mean?

Working on that one, have one little part that I am working on . Should take me no more then a week to
redo it. First on a slower tempo and build it up again.

I am also jamming with some lecturers in a couple of weeks of my school and so im also working on that setlist/
songs like Uprising from Muse. So it is a whole different thing to learn but I enjoy it.

I am planning to film both of these in the upcoming week.

also what do you think of this device : http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/EUR/Prodipe-Studio-22-USB-Audio-Interface/art-PCM0012164-000
and this one http://www.musicstore.de/en_EN/EUR/Peavey-Xport-USB-Gitarren-Interface/art-PCM0010587-000

They are both usb interface and are pretty cheap.

Hey Marc, looking forward to see your vids mate smile.gif

As for the interfaces... hmmm, the only one that I've had experiences with (the vocals for the Days of Confusion EP were recorded on it) was this one:

It's about 133 euros at Thomann, but it's worth the buck - do you have a budget established already?

Yes as said earlier in this topic, I currently have 50 euro's spare. But in 2 months I have a holiday in which I can work more, So its either going to be a usb interface that fits my budget, or a second hand mic. ( its a poor students life )

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Apr 28 2013, 07:18 AM

Oh, alright man, but anyway, in my opinion, the audio interface is a priority in respect to the microphone. It will provide far better recording quality at home, as for the mic, if you don't have the cab at home, you can't quite use it for guitar recording.

Posted by: snackajacks Apr 29 2013, 02:33 PM

I ordered the Behringer UCG102, it is a simple usb interface. Got pretty good reviews and is really cheap (ordered for 20 euros )
This is a review of it . hope to get it this week biggrin.gif

Hey Marc, out of what I am seeing it looks like it's an ok'ish piece of gear. Now, you need to try it yourself to see if you have made a good investment.

Of course, I am waiting for that take of PG's tune and now you can record it with your new audio interface wink.gif

Yes well as said ordered from HongKong, it usually takes a week biggrin.gif In the meantime I have time to perfect my take.
I am also jamming on videos on youtube ( its called guitarmaps ) where there is a backingtrack and it shows which scale you can
improvise on. I really like it and it gets me out of my daily rush of playing the same licks over and over again

That would be so cool !

While practising yesterday my high e snatched of the guitar, so I have to get to a guitar shop to replace the thing,
While I was practising I found out that my tone sounded a lot better without the reverb.

Oh and another thing, since I am going to use guitarrig again with my guitarlink I found that my boss gt5 can act as a midi footpedal for the program, just have to get a midi-usb cable, that way I can use express pedals in guitarrig.

So my quest for today is getting a new e string.

Oh, bummer! I was shooting my April lesson for GMC and guess what, my small 350W lamp went out and I had no spares... Needless to say, I will have to wait till the bulb gets here and then re-record mostly everything. I hate it when I'm a cloud head and forget to buy spares...

Oh man , How I love the song "Grace" of your album. I really like the the harmonized part " Find another memory, all your dreams of ecstacy". Some riffs remind me somehow of Velvet Revolver ( not the heavy parts ). Overall its awesome.

are there any unreleased songs somewhere to find on myspace ?

Hey mate! 'Grace' is a song that is very dear to me - it was written for my girlfriend, before she became my girlfriend smile.gif It has a nice story behind it..

Well, at this moment there are various live recordings on youtube, but they are not good quality. Otherwise, nothing officially released smile.gif But... soon wink.gif

Posted by: snackajacks May 7 2013, 08:25 PM

I found out something really cool about memorizing licks that is working out for me ,as a matter of fact, I am going to show it to you when I get my recording stuff. I think its really cool . PREPARE !

Great man smile.gif You can even shoot a lil vid while setting it up and using it biggrin.gif I am sure a lot of folks should love it here!

as you probably are wondering what I have done this couple of weeks

THIS

]

Its not with my new usb interface, since I have had little time to set it up ( will do video about that )
But this was the memorizing stuff I told about. I feel like I trained my muscle memory.

Thanks cosmin, Yes I really wanted to spend every minute that I had of free time ( which isn't too much, due school ) on guitar.
I have set up my usb interface to work with guitarrig and I am finding out how to set up the guitarrig vst in Mixcraft.

I am also still working on Technical Difficulties, which I want to be better than it is now. And I am still using youtube to jam over backingtrack in C major to get in in my head.

When I have time I would really like to write down how I used my muscle memory to remind this piece.

I feel I have to thank you for motivating me again a couple of weeks ago wink.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 17 2013, 09:04 AM

No problem man, you did all the hard work wink.gif

T'would be awesome if you wrote about it indeed and please post vids more often, I was amazed by the last one!

Posted by: snackajacks May 27 2013, 08:45 PM

I haven't been very active lately but I kicked ass at school. As you know I am studying game design now at my college. And since I got all my 60 ects ( european credits ) I am able to go to a University next year biggrin.gif. So from Game College I am now going to study Technology and Psychology next year biggrin.gif wohooo

As for the uploads , I am working on the last part of Scarified biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 28 2013, 08:17 AM

That sounds great my friend! biggrin.gif Both directions seem to work fine for ya, so big congrats and I am looking forward to see that recording wink.gif

In your opinion, which was the most difficult part of 'Scarified' ?

Posted by: snackajacks May 28 2013, 09:44 AM

Well, I think for the most part the memorizing of the shapes, because when I looked first at the tablature I was overwhelmed. But I saw a pattern in the shapes that made it easier. For the last part that I am working on its also more or less the memorizing. Of course there are these fast licks in the solo which requires some fast alternate picking.

Another thing is that there is no way to practice this 100 times a day as after playing it 5 times my hands get tired of playing and needing to take a break.

but to answer your question, the hardest part of the whole song is actually the beginning ( the alternate ) ( 5 - 7 - 9 E ) ( 5 - 7 - 9 A ) Going up.
its quite hard to get it in sync. But the thing I learned from this song is that motivation will help a lot. And I practiced it with a metronome ( which I don't do often )

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 29 2013, 08:39 AM

Mate, now, I hope that you are more convinced than ever, that practicing with a metronome will only take you up on the ladder of evolution as a player!

Good going wink.gif Indeed, out of what I can figure out, that ascending run has to be tight as hell in order for it to sound great and trust me 5, focused takes are good enough, rather than 10 takes, during which you also watch TV or so.

Looking forward to see the final vid biggrin.gif

Posted by: snackajacks May 29 2013, 05:00 PM

Yes , absolutely. Next week I will upload something else too. A trailer for my game at school. It involves zombie and classical music biggrin.gif
I know that you are going to love it biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 30 2013, 08:04 AM

Oh yes, the one you told me about last evening! biggrin.gif Let the games begin!!

Posted by: snackajacks May 30 2013, 01:35 PM

fast question , what scales does yngwie use for his neoclassical sound ? I am really loving that scale. I can find some notes
but have no clue on which scale it is

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 31 2013, 07:34 AM

Hey man, Yngwie uses the Phrygian dominant mode and diminished arpeggios usually, in order to get his sound smile.gif I will make a quick vid for ya, to explain the basics, ok?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu May 31 2013, 10:31 PM

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 22 2013, 05:26 PM

Hey Cosmin, I have a question. Was watching this video where they improvise over"Have a blast" from Periphery , They use the Chord progression to improvise. Now my question is : They obviously are using more scales than one. Are they switching the scales when the chord changes or how do they do it ?

Thanks Cosmin biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 23 2013, 09:25 PM

hey Marc! I will give it one more listen with fresh ears tomorrow and let you know what I found - at this time it seems like they are sticking to one scale. But taking into account that I am uber tired, my ears can play tricks smile.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 24 2013, 10:54 AM

hehe okay biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 25 2013, 10:22 AM

Hey mate, out of what I figured they are playing C minor and sometimes C melodic minor (not so sure tho) and throwing in some chromatic runs here an there.

The chords are clearly harmonized out of the C minor scale - C D Eb F G Ab Bb -> steps 1, 4 and 5 give us the C min, F min and G min chords.

Are you planning to build something based on this track?

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 26 2013, 06:53 PM

Yup that was the idea, I knew the chords but I have no idea how combine this all in a scale.
I am going to have a try with C minor smile.gif Let you know if something cool happens

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 27 2013, 07:19 AM

Hehe, by all means!

Let me know when you have something cooked up over the track biggrin.gif Otherwise, how's playing going?

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 27 2013, 02:26 PM

Goodd, When I have a day off work I am going to record the covers I have learned so far.
My sister bought a canon camera so I might borrow that one. Oh yea I got work at a
Gasstation in summer so I might have money for a 7 string biggrin.gif but currently I am listening and covering Periphery and
Eden from TesseracT. Still playing about 3 hours a day biggrin.gif

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jun 28 2013, 08:36 AM

Sounds good to me man!! biggrin.gif Playing 3 focused hours a day can offer great results - you're only learning songs or are you also doing any other exercises?

Looking forward to see some vids from ya wink.gif

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 28 2013, 07:54 PM

I am learning full songs as well as some licks that I just hear on the radio, trying to recreate the tunes that I have in my head ( wow that sounds freaky ) and I am still jamming over some tracks biggrin.gif

Yes I will record em as soon smile.gif just back from a trip to amsterdam to get my parents to the airport and after that went to antwerp in belgium to help my sister moving out and now im finally back. Tiredd.

I am also working on different vibratos when bending. It adds a nice flavour
You will hear from me !

That sounds like a plan mate - drop a line when you have'em up here wink.gif I always like it when I hear people telling me that they are working on articulation skills!

Posted by: snackajacks Jun 30 2013, 10:06 PM

Damnit, I don't have any equipment in here to record ( holiday , I am my parents house ) however I got a new phone so I
am going to try out how that works out tomorrow evening. I think one of the licks is something I want to progress upon.

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 1 2013, 06:58 AM

No biggie man, use the phone - I think I have a good idea, regarding how you can master a lick and place it in your quiver for universal usage wink.gif

I heard Steve Vai talk about this last week - he called it 'conquering your limitations'

Posted by: snackajacks Jul 30 2013, 05:49 PM

So I finally managed to get access to the forum back biggrin.gif
I went to Musicstore in Koln today to look at some shiny gear , played some PRS, some Sterling and Ibanez but
came to the conclusion that I didn't any of these guitars more comfortable to play than my own, maybe its just because I am used to it

I also redid some settings on my boss gt5 to get a better tone, took it back to basic without delays, chorus etc and then rebuilded again.
Tomorrow I am going to get some wood to block my tremolo on my Rg550 to get it to drop the tuning.

And yes, I still have to shoot video's over this week. But as said, I worked out one of the licks that I talked about and I am looking forward to let you hear it. but it has to be perfect smile.gif

Btw Cool video ! I saw your video with the other band, I really like it, You will become famous biggrin.gif

Gtrz from the Netherlands

Hey Marc!

Glad you had the opportunity to test the axes and it looks like you are a busy guy smile.gif Now, blocking that trem is a great idea - what do you plan on performing with the drop tuning?

That lick doesn't have to be perfect smile.gif I need to correct something, right? biggrin.gif And thank you - that song used to rock my childhood!

Yes holiday for me is working to get money to live as a student biggrin.gif I am planning on rewatching your videochat with Drag the waters and play it in the drop tuning and some other songs from Textures.

I am also practising On the backs of angels from Dream Theater. I really like the song. And I am trying to learn this song by ear by my former guitar instructor

yes yes busy times !

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Aug 1 2013, 08:45 AM

Awesome! Can't wait to see a recording of that - btw, I'll explain the solo as well this evening smile.gif

We are performing in the same festival as Textures - different days tho, us on the 29th them on the 31st in a festival in here, alongside Gojira and Napalm Death and holy moley - Marcel Coenen was your former instructor? I have heard his music years ago biggrin.gif
