Welcome to my new GMC collaboration. This one is based in the style of Paradise Lost and the cool thing is that Kristofer Dahl is already writing lyrics to sing on this one!
As we want to make this song the cooler possible we would like to invite everybody to join and record your solos, guitar arrangements and ideas over the track to use it for the final mix.
You can use G minor or G Pentatonic minor everywhere except when Dsus2 chord is played on the bridge. There you MUST be careful and use one of these options: D pentatonic major, D mixolydian or G major scale. If you are a beginner don't worry, avoid playing over this part and jam over the other sections.

IMPORTANT INFO About files required:
In order to make the things easier for compiling takes and mixing I need that each participant shares 3 files:
- Audio file with the mix of the backing and your guitar. - Audio file only with your guitar (If possible this audio should have the same length than the mix version) - Video of you playing the solo, and if it's not possible a picture.
The best way to share this is compressing in a zip file to be downloaded from here or using sharing service as dropbox, wetransfer, and copying the link here.
If you decide to share your files using soundcloud please remember to "allow downloads".
Thanks!

Despite my late entry in to the last collab, I"d like to be the first one on in this one I think it's built in a way that I could have some very "teachable moments" in the solo section so I'll probably do a chat lesson with bits of the resulting solo. I"m in!

Hi Gab, I am IN.
I also want to try to add a pipe organ in the background to make it a little bit more "mystical"... ok??
Over the G Major Scale you have written "Over Dsus4".... I think its "Over Dsus2"....?

Paradise Lost might be my all time favorite metal band. If you haven't yet - check out the albums "Icon", "Draconian Times" and "Tragic Idol".
I am itching to get recording!
P.S. I'm in

Yes - it's really cool to see a band revisit a 'previous sound' of theirs but still with a really fresh approach (I don't feel they are repeating or copying themselves in any way)

Hey
this is a raw preview of my contrib..... very inspirating !!
I kinda want to sing on this maybe. Maybe maybe. If there's room for it!

Great guys! I'm sure that this will be a KILLER track when finished!
I've never heard newer albums after those that sound closer to Depeche Mode. I also like these albums, as well as the classic style. I'm surprised that they have been editing newer music that sounds as good and fresh as their first productions.
Another band that I like in this style is Katatonia.

Hi Laurent! Cool soloing here! I can use any of these ones for the final track however I know that you can polish even more your take, define phrases and give more attention to feeling. You have more time so keep on working!

Go for it mate!! Also, my take might need enhancing with some growling, as I don't do the low type of screams. I hope to have mine up in a week.

Preliminary lyrics:
I’m not in vain A passing dawn A lie sustained A rise & fall
You'll never see the break of dawn You’ll never meet me until all Get to feel my broken heart Don’t try to tell me cause I know...
Interesting! I like the fact that your phrasing reminds me to Marylin Manson's Sweet Dream solo. Your phrasing is cool, I like how the solo evolves regarding rhythm and notes range.
I think that the note choices can be wiser. Mostly those notes in which you stay. try to analyse the notes compared with the chord sounding and see if there is a better option. It's a slow process but that's how we work on details when solo doesn't appear by once naturally (this magic doesn't always appear). In this cases, hard work is the way.
Posted by: Todd Simpson Apr 20 2016, 03:39 PM
Cool take here Fzalfa!! Your hard work is paying dividends!!
Gabe: the guys in katatonia considered themselves Paradise Lost fanboys and it heavily influenced their style. The albums that Paradise did that sound like depeche mode were the most commercially successful that they have ever done but as you might guess it really irritated their fan base when a doom/gothic/metal band went all "synth pop"! The new record should be out in JUNE of this year I think. More heavy stuff I hope Todd

Yeah, I'm one of those persons who also enjoyed the Depeche Mode style albums... I've noticed that many of these gothic/doom bands started to sound more synth pop, it was curious to see so many bands going on that direction.
Great take Laurent! Your solo is very catchy and the note choices is totally catchy. I specially enjoyed the bridge section, you resolved it really well. Very enjoyable solo! Thanks!

This is a good first draft! I think that if you fix those wrong notes that appear here and there, and work more on timing, this can be a good solo. A little details that I'd like to mark is that the overall evolution could be adjusted too. For example, I feel that the intro phrases have too many notes, I would go for something more simple and gradually increase notes / speed.

Yeah, Gab, I agree. I was fitting in more notes the second half of the intro and also thought that just mirroring the rhythm riff/mirror in 3rd, that is would be better sounding and transition. Sometimes, with so little time, I try to fit in too many ideas.

I think the "Depeche Mode" era was pretty ok, their songwriting has always been good.
I can't help but think that the reason "One Second" was their most commercially successful album, was simply because of anticipation from the industry. This was the follow-up album to Icon and Draconian times - presumably boosted with a larger marketing budget than ever.
If you ask me - the "Depeche Mode" style albums that followed were much stronger musically.
Luckily for the world, Paradise Lost released the album "Tragic Idol" in 2012 - which to me is easily up to par with their old material.

Hi mate, this is much better!
I think that the intro connects smoother now with the main riff. However, my favourite part starts at 00:30 (the verse). I think that the phrases there are really good, very expressive. The evolution of your phrasing there is perfect!
I also think that what you play over the bridge sounds great but has some scale issues. When D sounds, you change the scale correctly, however you need to get back to the previous scale as soon as the following chord is played. There are weird things between 00:53 and 00:58, being more notorious at 00:57. Please re-check the scale used there.

Thanks Gab.
At 53 section I think I shift from D major scale hammer ons to (unfortunately) Fmajor/Dmin form by mistake or because it had tension. I could try it like that leaving the first note (which acts as the pedal for the hammer ons) oddly sharp for the underlying chord if I played the last note a 1/2 step down (where it should be for Bb/Gmin) but I'll probably end up playing the proper scale Bb/Gmin.

Think I figured out the bridge hammer on section. The second and fourth chords move slightly differently then the 1st and third. So I hung on the G rather than hammering on one more time higher in the scale.
Figured I'd torture myself and track it for fun using my Jericho Long Scale Baritone in Drop C. I just loaded with 65-13's from Wicked Wire. After grinding rust all day off the 64 GMC truck restoration project I'm doing, I think I musta been sun dazed to try.

Just an update - I have started recording today and it's crazy fun. I haven't used this type of super barky voice (bordering growling) for a long time.
But now I am also experimenting with a unison [somewhat] clean dub as well.
Fingers crossed!

Yes! I can't do classic growling - so you could try to overdub and/or repeat some of the stuff I sing, like a 'growling echo'. Could be really cool.
As soon as I have something that sounds decent I will share it with you guys so you can start working on it.

I think that it's a good idea to also have Ben singing the same with growling so that I can do some kind of mix to give more or less power to each part.

You'll never see the break of dawn You’ll never meet me until all Get to feel my broken heart No you can’t tell me cause I know...
...I’m not in vain
But I am lonely
For some reason, when I download the track it's in M4A and can't be imported to Reaper. Any chance you could upload in another format?

Kris,
That's some fun stuff. The vocals are great. Now need the time to play along with it.
Edit : Hmmm. For some reason the file crashes Live too. Weird. Will have to search why.
2 Edit : Ah, M4a files, even though its the unprotected version, probably don't work in many DAWs. I converted in iTunes to Wav for Live. Here is how to do it to MP3 or Wav if you use iTunes for future reference. I have a Mac and the conversion is the same.
"Protected songs are .m4p, non-protected ones are .m4a.
These both use AAC encoding, which ableton does not support. if you import audio from CDs using the AAC setting, you end up with (non-protected) ableton-incompatible .m4a files, BUT you can actually use iTunes to convert the .m4a songs to .wav or .mp3. you just have to change your import settings to .wav or to .mp3, and then right-click (or Apple equivalent) the song in iTunes and choose "Convert to wav" or "Convert to mp3" as the case may be. at least, you can do that in the windows version."
heheheh KILLER!!! I have this one in repeat!! Great job Kris with those vocals, melodies and lyrics! I can't get out of my head the "I'm in vain" phrase...
I think that we have a killer new hit!! Please Ben feel free to duplicate vocals with your growling voice to have it for the final mix. I won't use it all the time but I think that it can be really cool for the chorus and some parts.... you can also try some "responses" to the words sang by Kris, like a delay but with screaming vocals... Everything you can experiment is welcome.
Will have the individual files for you soon And a video of course.
Sound very cool to me Ben!
Thought: Have you sung this with my take? I think it would make most sense for us to hear your take with my vocals as well.
Because in the end - what matters are all the "little" interactions/details between the the different vocals/instruments in the mix. That's the kind of stuff we can't really think consciously about, but for each time we perform a piece of music, we fine polish those details without necessarily realising it. These details are the reason why two takes can sound really different, even though we cannot tell exactly what makes up for that difference.
So my advice would be to not rush things, since there still is time. Maybe spend just a little bit of time with this collab on a daily basis and follow Gab's advice about dubs/responses.

My whole take was based around your phrasing Here's both vocals:
Ok got it - that's great, Gab should be able to use this as a dub. For consistency I would suggest you try to record something over the 00:39 line as well - since you don't know exactly how he will be using your take. It might give him problems if at one place the dub is missing.
Now that you have done the dub - I would suggest you practice something different, which will be more challenging but artistically possibly more rewarding:
Try to find places where you can record something that sticks out from my take - as opposed to the "perfect dub". It can be an echo of my line, or maybe a different kind of phrasing, or just differently a pitched scream, maybe some spoken words, heavy breathing etc etc
Let me know if it makes sense!

It makes se0nse. The reason I skipped 0:39 is because it's simply too high pitched for me I'll see what else I can do
Will await Gab's comments as well to see what he has to say. Not that I don't value your input, cause I do!

Recorded a take messing around with Kris' vocal track trying to practice balance and stuff.
Change the beginning to more match the underlying notes. And obviously the beginning verse part trying to find something inside Kris' lines.
Edit. A second version. Mainly changes at the end of the opening and in the first verse-like section. And I played a doubling of the bridge panning each separate track hard r and left. Fooled around with the balance. There's a flubbed note in there too......cause darn if I can't have one of those floating around. I like the ending of the first one with the vocals alone, but thought I'd try something at the end.

Cool! I think the very first response to my vocals is a keeper (at ~ 00:29 ) - in general a nice inspired jam though. Let's see what Gab says.

By the way, I think me and Kris have gone in a bit of different directions:
...was my inspiration. What was yours, Kris?
Also, I double tracked my vocals for more brutality in the one posted yesterday. Here's the single track version:
I have actually listened a bit to that album - although I generally don't listen much to music that uses growling instead of lead melody. I must say the growling actually suits that specific album though.
I wasn't inspired by any specific song here, but in general my biggest inspiration for this type of 'barky' singing is Hefield and Nick Holmes (from Paradise lost).

Yeah I like the 1st version of the verse section best too. The second version, I think, has too much background playing in that first section. But I figured I tried some different things.
I like the second ending of the opening section better as it follows the underlying melody more. And am uncertain whether I like the non-doubled bridge or the doubled one best, but lean a bit to the doubled one.
But thanks. I appreciate the comments.

My whole take was based around your phrasing Here's both vocals:
Hey Cael! I can say that this are killer vocals! I'm still thinking on the production of this one and I think that I'll experiment with different possibilities during the mix. Probable using both vocals all the time can be the best way to make the whole thing sound consistent however I'll try other variations to see if we can get something more creative.
I also think that you should record something over the part that you let Kris alone, just to be safe that we don't need it in the final mix. I don't think that you should go high, you can stay on a low note. Try possibilities and if you don't find them I can send you a sample tomorrow when my voice is back (I just come back from a short Cirse' tour with very cold weather).
About "responses", try it too! I can generate them using these vocals but maybe you can try in some parts to see if anything cooler appears.
I'm really happy with this one, it's turning great!
PS: The melodies and lyrics are growing on me every day.

Interesting mate! My favourite part is the bridge section, it sounds like a killer arrangement for that part.
You need to be careful with timing in the introduction. The note choices are ok but you are not going tight with the riffs.

Sounds good, Gabriel I haven't had the chance to try something over the high pitches scream yet, but I'll look at it over the next few days.

Well, you can try something that moves less than Kris vocals, you can stay on the same note... by the way try a few options and share them here so we can choose the best one.

So awesome Ben!! Do you think that you can extend the first part of the scream to make it have the same length than Kris vocals? You can stay in the same note, it will work with Kris's change.

I tried several times, but I'm struggling with then going into the "yeah" part. I'll try again.

sorry, because of my job I've had not more time to offer you more....
Cool playing! Thanks a lot Chris! It's great to have you on this one.

Here are all my files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5415283/Kris-PL-collab.zip
Audio starts from point 0 with count in. I have removed all time based effects (reverb, delay) but kept compressors, pitch effects and automated volume swells. Let me know if you need a different export.
I have included two different angles for the vocal video. Very excited about this one, looking forward to the end product.
Vocals:
I’m not in vain A passing dawn A lie sustained A rise & fall I fall
You'll never see the break of dawn You’ll never meet me until all Get to feel my broken heart No you can’t tell me cause I know...
...I’m not in vain
But I am lonely

Great take and KILLER AXE!! I want one bad!! Maybe one day when they are old and used I can pick one up under my "guitar budget" which caps about $500 per instrument.

Very nice. It seems all takes were geared towards melody as opposed to shredding/licks (except mine perhaps haha ). This is exactly how it should be when writing music together - one can only fit so much shred into a song without sacrificing something else.
And yes I do recognise that guitar, is it any good?
Cool! Good job with this solo mate. The first half is very tasty. Thanks for your take Laurent!

Personally I feel this might be one of the coolest collabs we have ever done. All participants were really focused on creating a song rather than just a jam medley. YOU GUYS ROCK!!

I'm impressed of this one! The song is killer, it could be part of any of the greatest Paradise Lost albums so let's hope one of them discovers this kind of tribute.
Congratulations to everybody who has made this one possible!!
