Economy picking is awesome. It's good to be able to do both, so you can switch in any situation

Standard picking = ok (great for heavy)
Alternative picking = good Economy picking = great Hybrid picking = awesome Alternative picking is probably the hardest to pick up on - getting the pick angle correct. Economy picking just speeds it up in a logical picking direction, i perfer it, it's more natural for me and sounds smoother. Just think are you moving up or down to the next string and follow through with the pick, practice sweeping across multiple strings too (that's the hard part). Try out Hybrid picking afterwards, picking with the extra finger(s) to be used along side the pick! Play around with them all, your'll find they all have there good use in different styles of playing. Any song should work, some i guess match better than others. The feeling of the song can change with the picking pattern. You want to play heavy, chunga chunga chunga rhythm, or smooth, etc? Not really sure about the songs, I know I practice EP and AP both within same exercises, all of them, wherever possible. For example if you have one run, you can try to rehearse it with both EP and AP, it will only do you good.
