Here you go Pedja, first collab of yours I have entered. I tried to focus on 1 bar, rest, 1 bar, rest... I hope this is what you are looking for and I enjoyed the backing very much. Also, I tried to create a tone similar to a Sax so I hope you like that is well. I hope the delay into the "rest bar" doesn't bother you too much.

Steve first of all thank you for entering my collab for the first time This is excellent first take. It could be final take as well but lets talk some things about it first...
Like you mentioned sound was great and your delay filled in the gaps even when you didn't play. Your melodic approach was very nice. I enjoyed the melody especially in the first part of solo (first 8 bars). There you really developed and extended from basic starting idea. Great job there. As you said, there was one delay bar which turned things around a bit. I would like you to do more takes and just focus on playing when you need to play. The reason why I am saying this is discipline. One of the main purposes of this collab is to show you how awkward it can actually feel to play one rest one or play two rest two. When you do this for a long time, this becomes automatic and it basically is part of you. Spacing will then be natural and so will all the melodies start to flow simply because you will force(in a way) yourself to listen back to things you play in that one bar. Hope that makes sense?
My recommendation, record as many as you feel like and upload them here - I don't mind listening to them all. In fact, record some Play two Rest two approaches. If you want, start Play one Rest one but with REST in the 1st bar ! That will turn things around a bit . You can do that with Play two Rest two as well (start to play in bar 2 and 3 then rest in bar 4 and 5 etc).
Overall I am very pleased Steve, for first take its very good work. I look forward hearing more from you!

Thank you very much Pedja and I'm glad you liked the take. I will most certainly upload more takes with the different "feel" that you mentioned. I think this will be quite beneficial for me not to mention a lot of fun. I will work on it over the weekend and give you a few more things to critique. Thanks again for this "classroom atmosphere" man!

Tolek you should do another take. You were supposed to pick one Play and Rest pattern and do it all the way trough the solo. You can pick
Play one Rest one Play two Rest two You can also do Rest one Play one Rest two Play two

So, you don´t accept mixing both possibilites? And no whole note instead for the rest? Would sound boring, imo.

You can mix possibilities once you complete these ones. The concept is to be disciplined and to rest on purpose so you can develop your ear to listen back things you play. That means no whole notes carrying over and playing into the next bar Check out what Skennington did, it was great except he turned around pattern at one point when he overplayed but first 8 bars were right!
Edit : Typo

Tolek, I hope you don't mind a little review from me?
The third note played (00:06) seems to be a little off beat, it's nothing major though.
There is a difference that guitar players often miss in long notes and breaks. I see a lot of long notes but not the breaks Pedja asked for.
Now for the good stuff
Awesome tone, I really like that slow vibrato of yours. The backing really asks for the syncopated start that you did (I have something similar in my take) and you did it in a nice way. I like the blues lick at the end, fits nicely. Note choice was great.
Nice to listen to, but maybe all you've got to do is to cut some of the long notes?
-EDIT- Seems like someone writes replies way too slowly (thinking about himself).

2nd upload Pedja. Used the same tone and a similar melody but took your advice and went for 2 bar rest..2 bar rest... I also started on the 2nd bar of the backing as well.. I think I got it fairly close..

Excellent Steve! You did everything I asked for. Now its just matter of overdoing this method until it becomes natural to your ear. Well done man.
Now you can practice Play TWO Rest TWO but starting on the 2nd bar ! That way you get 1st bar silence, bars 2 and 3 you play, bars 4 and 5 silence etc Excellent work Steve!
Posted by: Caelumamittendum Jul 12 2009, 07:28 PM
So....yeah. It's just a bunch of different licks that have no connection.
EDIT: I geuss this is a bit more melodic and a mix between play two/play one... (two last in the upload below)

You mixed up patterns to keep it more interesting. I would prefer just one, or record play one rest one then play two rest two and pick one that you like more! This is kinda cheating

Thank you Pedja, I will definitely incorporate this style of "thinking" while playing and keep practicing over this backing. I may even through another at you. Use which ever you like man. Thanks again.

Here's my take. The playing wasn't perfect at quite a few bits so I'll try and re-record it before the deadline.
The video is as i promised is coming later as i am having some problem with my webcam
Very melodic take Isac! You mixed different patterns for this one I mentioned that it would be ideal to pick only one play rest pattern but since Ben did it and now you did it I guess it will be okay for others to do such a thing as well

Ok Pedja: Here's my first take. I'm going to do another one for sure. For this, I just wanted to make sure that I could get the discipline of play rest down. I think I did ok, but this one isn't very musical. I added the delay in the final mix just to mess around with the sound. The harmony part for one measure was an accident, but I left it in just to add interest. Next, I'll probably do something with less effects so that the guitar playing stands out a little more.

Very melodic take with lots of development Jim. I like it ! May I suggest using less delay? Or if you plan to keep that delay adjust it so that its volume is way back in the mix

Hi Pedja,
Here is my take. I really loved playing over this backing! Tried to put in some dynamics, some rhythmic displacement and some syncopation besides the playing/resting concept. I chose to primarily use chord tones as I am heavily learning all kinds of arpeggio shapes etc to improve my improvisation skills
I've attached also the GP file which should quite accurate .

Hi Roger,
Very nice sound first of all and take is very melodic. Development is very good in the beginning I like it. Somewhere along the way you switched play rest patterns and you even did play two rest one etc. It would be nice if you could submit a take with specific play rest pattern. I mentioned this to Ben, Tolek and Isac but I guess it will be ok to accept this for final mix
Nice take my friend!

I should have just put play rest approaches and say "play as you please" Its a bit more difficult sticking to one and making music with it, thats why I wanted everyone to follow specific one. Well, I will keep all your takes anyways since you put some time into it all

In the noedit version I think the flow stopped in the middle for some bars.. But thanks After all, you're the master here Looking forward to comments, I always enjoy your collabs Pedja You can put me up on the auto-signup list if you want

Pedja, Here's another take. This one is a bit more improvized than the first. I notice that I'm getting better at playing 1 and resting 1. I still got a little carried away with the delay, but toned it down a lot so you can better hear the part. Funny, how all that space in the empty measures seems to want to get filled with echoes. I plan to keep working on this till the 24th so let me know what you think I should work on.
I've improvised both a guitar and a keyboard take. The keyboard take is a little bit stricter and the guitar one is more of a solo where I keep in mind to have breakes and to listen to my playing. I'd like to have been able to put more time into it and I will keep this in mind and practise it later (promise). But right now I'm very tired and I can't work on this more this week. After the weekend I'll invest some time in my playing again. But I hope you like it, I did try my best.

Max both takes were great I just prefer noedit version more (has more natural flow and improvisation aspect to it!) I will put you on auto-signup list no worries. Comments will be published before 1st of August for sure , will send you PM when its all ready. Thanks Max!

This take shows that you are expanding and exploring things over this backing track. I like the first take more as it sounds more structured and organized. I also like development and melody in first one. Keep working or if you want I can choose whichever version you prefer for final mix. Let me know, deadline is 24th. Thanks Jim!

Olle interesting take. I did not expect something like this when you asked me for backing without keys. I am thinking hard what should I give you comment on here - keyboard playing, guitar , both or overall sound and quality ? It reminds me of some background music from Serbian movies by the way

Can I heard your take several times and every time I heard it I wondered what you were trying to do It sounds mostly play two rest two or something along those lines anyways. You hold the ending note in your phrases very long which results in new another bar. What you should do instead is have silence and cut of note. I can accept this take if you want me to, since today is the deadline. Let me know man

hmm maybe I understood the concept a little wrong?
I tried to do something like this
I played in 1st and 2nd bars, then rested for 3rd and 4th than played in 5th and 6th than rested in 7th and 8th, started to play with 9th and 10th and kept playing in 11th and 12th and rested 1.5 bars played 1.5 bars and reached 16th where I rest and I play in 17th bar rest in 19th and 20th than I play the finale in 21th bar...
maybe I should just play one bar and one bar rest I'll give it a go tomorrow morning if its possible, if not and you accept this in this state, that will fit too. I am sorry man, I think I didnt had much time to think about it

Hi Pedja,
this is my take, a pretty minimalist one I must admit and messy at some places, but anyway.
I was surprised that you used Reason for the BT, have you always been using it? I've tried it a lot on my friend's computer and I really liked those "racks" and how the interface is designed. I've read that their the new Propellerhead Record is going to be out soon for analog instrument recordings But for programming midi and then assigning drums, keys etc. Reason could be the best among all samplers with it's cool plug-ins.
Anyway, thanks for doing this collab even in this hot summer (30 degrees celsius in my room). Although many people are busy or just tired to participate, it's great to see your dedication!

Hey Berko, Thanks for submitting your take man. It sounds interesting and I really like sound of your guitar in there. You are right, its pretty hot (I would even say insane) weather. Temperature has been ranging in my town for past 10 days between 35 and 40 degrees celzius. Pretty crazy So I know how you feel and others (in Europe at least to sit with guitar at this temperature. Thanks for finding time to record man, I will use it for final mix
Reason is my favorite and I use it with Nuendo (I activate EZDrummer in Nuendo- rest is Reason). I will do in future some backing tracks with strings and such. Really want to explore Reason and apply my arranging skills in there

Here's my take - right under the wire... Thanks for letting me in on this. It was fun. Unfortunately, I procrastinated. Leaving myself with just tonight to come up with something. It was so challenging/interesting that I wish I had more time to really concentrate.
Thanks again, and sorry for cutting it so close to the deadline.

Hi Pedja: Here's my final take. I tried to use a little bit of all three scales (Gmin Pentatonic, G Aeolian Mode, D Phrygian Dominant) where appropriate. I hope it turned out ok. Thanks again for a great colab. This was fun and a great experience. By the time I was done, I was getting pretty good at playing one, resting one.
10:41pm! It's still the 24th. I finished with plenty of time to spare!

No problem, you actually did great with following rules. Sometimes you played into the next bar a beat or so but other than that you did really well. Glad you could make it !
