GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ My Band Opens For Metallica

Posted by: Gabriel Leopardi Mar 6 2014, 12:53 PM

Hey friends! I have some awesome news for Cirse. This March 29th we will be opening for Metallica!! The show will be done on a big stadium for 55000 assistants, it's already sold out and we are the only opening act that day! On 30th, the band Carajo will be playing.

This is like a dream come true for me... I've never thought I would be sharing stage with one of the biggest rock/metal bands ever. smile.gif smile.gif

Check the stadium where bands like Black Sabbath, Gun's & Roses, U2 and Pearl Jam have already played... ohmy.gif

Totally agree smile.gif I dont know if you usually do a big 'guitar hero' solo spot at a normal Cirse gig but I think this gig should have a 5 minute Gabe shred section.

This is excellent news Gab and congratulations!

I hope there is some good video of the show.

Also, please position a camera to shoot video of the crowd, from center stage, for the entire show, and upload that video so we can play it on our TVs while we practice guitar. biggrin.gif

Yes, it's definitely a dream that comes true. Thanks friend. I will share all my experience here with you. smile.gif

Since you are the only opening act, chances are you will share the backstage smile.gif I am sure we will be seeing pics with a Chesire Cat smile on Gabi's face, near Kirk, James, Lars and Rob biggrin.gif

WOW! Congrats Gabe your bands awsome and im sure all you guys worked hard to make it to this level, out of curiousity how does it feel to you playing in front of such a large audience? you are a pro but still do you get nervous and how to you calm yourself down if you do

Posted by: Headbanger Mar 8 2014, 11:42 AM

hehehe nobody knows what can happen. We met Duran Duran, Paramore and Incubus backstage when we shared stage. When we shared stage with Evanescence, the security guys never let us be close to them. So this depends on the artist and how they feel that day. However this is something I cannot understand, how do you travel to another country, share stage with musicians and you don't want to share at least some words with them? I don't believe in "fame", what does it mean? Before "celebrities" or "famous", they are musicians, and this makes them colleagues. But well, this is a good topic for another thread.

Thanks a lot mate! There is always a new challenge that makes you feel like the first time. If you feel like that, it means that the moment is very important and that you won't forget it. So every time that I feel nervous, I also feel happy of being able to live such a great moment.

The biggest audience that we played has been for around 7000 / 8000 and I can say that the energy that you feel is incredible. There are no words to explain it.

This is the first time that we played for many people. The video reflects the overall feeling...

You are so right Gabi smile.gif I don't really understand the whole 'now I'm famous, there's a big wall between us' kind of thing. Indeed, when you share the stage with someone, you should be friendly and get to know the people, even if they don't sell 100000000 records a day smile.gif ... yet!

Exactly, it doesn't make sense to me.

More than that, there are bands that I know personally here in my country, that have reached a level of somewhat recognition on a national plan... and guess what smile.gif They are acting important and whatnot right now biggrin.gif I guess it's a syndrome that occurs at any level, out of what I notice.

I'm sure you'll meet the guys in Metallica.
If you feel that 'maybe' you won't (due to timing or different backstage areas, etc.) have your manager or Luciana talk to their road manager about meeting the band. Or, find Kirk's guitar tech or any of the other instrument techs and ask if it would be possible to meet the guys? Be careful about saying, "I've been a fan since I was a little kid". It 'may' make them feel a bit old. If you have a Metallica CD or Record, bring one for an autograph. Don't mention downloading.

I have awesome / very funny stories about Kirk from friends that have been at the Antártida with him the last time Metallica played here... but I couldn't tell them here. laugh.gif

yeah! we are completely ready! I can say that I'm so anxious! We did many interviews and rehearsed a lot. We prepared a very powerful show, with all our heavier songs and some new arrangements special for this time. Tonight we will be playing on open TV show, 2 songs live, one is Ritual, our song, and the other is Paranoid by Black Sabbath. smile.gif

Let's see what happens with Metalhead audience which is not very open minded here. smile.gif

Check the stadium where bands like Black Sabbath, Gun's & Roses, U2 and Pearl Jam have already played... ohmy.gif

Just Realized that as i'm posting this, your at the Gig right now lol. ROCK your Socks off Gabe. I love the adrennalyn of being in front of a good crowd, there is nothing like it, and my biggest crowd ever was maybe 300 people lol. So if you do the math, take the emotions i had during my gig with 300 people, Multiply those feelings 55000........By my calculations my Heat would have lept out of my chest and played guitar for me lol. Hope it's going well, and hope you get to meet metallica......well maybe not LARS

Congratulations Gab...I know (from reading certain pages in Spanish on Facebook) that you guys had a really tough time from Metallica fans who were not very nice about a non heavy metal band supporting their band.....Most of them, probably none of them, had ever heard your Band play before they had commented, I am sure...That is typical of one track minded people. When I saw the photo of Lucia, your lead singer standing in front of those fans, some still entering that stadium...I realised what a major task that you guys had to deal with. I have nothing but admiration for all of you and without knowing...know that you would have done a fantastic job under those extremely difficult circumstances...Congratulations Cirse!!! cool.gif

Hello friends!! Here I'm back from the best weekend ever!! We had a lot of mixed feelings and everything has been so intense. I would like to tell you in detail the most amazing moments.

Here we go!

Saturday:

I got up at 9 and realized that there wasn't any water in my apartments. Some problem with the water bomb avoid me to wash my teeth!
Then I went to our drummer's rehearsal room where we meet with the band and staff to go to the stadium which is is La Plata, around 100 KM from my home. We travelled listening to Iron Maiden, Pantera & Megadeth. I was feeling exited, anxious, nervous, happy, everything...

When we arrived to La Plata city, both cars where playing Metallica! laugh.gif Yeah, we were very exited. As soon as we get into car parking of the stadium I started to hear extremely loud and heavy guitars being played at the Stadium. Then I said... WOUUU. We dot the accreditations and we get into the stadium... I first went to the backstage to put my bags there, and then I walked to the stadium to see the stage...

I can't explain with words what I felt when I slowly started to see the whole empty stadium, with that big stage, with Metallica's assistant playing riffs with those beautiful ESP guitar... I have to be honest, I cried. smile.gif

The stadium reminded me to when I was 12 and used to watch Gun's & Roses and Metallica tour documentaries, it looks like those US arenas where they use to play, so all my body felt chills, I couldn't be more happy.

Once the "Orquesta de instrumentos reciclados" checked their lines, we could start checking our sound. As it was late, we had to do some soundcheck with audience there. It wasn't a bad thing because we could interact with people and play some metal covers that they singed with us. The good response from the people during the soundcheck made us feel more relaxed.

Sound check:

Why? People is very passionate in Argentina, and uses to be close minded. There are lots of bands that had really bad time on stage when they didn't fit with the style. Even big, popular bands. Cirse is not Thrash Metal, so we didn't know what could happen. That was the most difficult part of this... not playing in front of 50000 persons, it was how they would react with an alternative rock band with metal influences, and with a girl in vocals.

After the soundcheck we get into the backstage, more relaxed, but still anxious, nervous, exited, happy.. uff again everything!!

At 19 PM, it was already dark, sun was down, and the stadium was full. We had to go to the stage. ohmy.gif Those minutes from the back to the stage and the short minutes that we had to wait until we get into the stage has been a blank in mind, the adrenaline with all those mixed feeling again...

We got into the stage, and we did our most powerful show ever. We played good, we sounded good, people respected us and the show ended with a good response from the audience. I'm sure that 80% of those people, never heard Cirse, and there are lots of opinions, people that was surprised, people that liked it, people who only likes Thrash who disliked it, but whatever, we could show that Cirse is a solid rock band that can play in a Stadium for a Metal audience and be respected. smile.gif

The first seconds (maybe first minutes) my hands weren't totally precise but as soon as I reached the first song solo I was ready to show my skills! I played much more solos and much more shred than habitual. biggrin.gif

As soon as we ended the show, the whole band and team started crying because of the emotion. I don't remember a moment in our band that has been more emotive, our manager, our staff, my brother, my bandmates, everybody crying, totally happy. It was a dream that came true but also very challenging / difficult situation that we could manage successfully. I walked to the backstage and I meet my girlfriend and my mother that were also crying! Both know how much we worked and dedicated to this, and they both are part.

The day was ended for us, but we still could see Metallica rocking the stage. It's always great to see James Hetfield, the boss, rocking a big stadium. He is one of the best front man, metal singer and metal rhythm guitarists that I've ever seen live.

Then we went to the hotel, some guys went out for a beer but I was finished! I had to take a bath and go to sleep.

Sunday:

The second day was more relaxed off course. The tricky part was the first day, now nothing could went wrong. The day was very rainy but the cool thing is that at 5 pm it stopped, and we had another great night.

Again we did a short sound check, this time without audience and everything was ready.

While we were waiting for the show I could meet Kirk Hammett! I said him, hi Kirk! we are the support band, and he said: oh yeah! How are you guys, Did you had a great job yesterday? We gave him our album and we took that picture the picture that you already posted here:

At 19 we went into the stage and the experience was repeated but this time we were even more secure, so we played better, even with more attitude, and my friends said that the sound was better than the first day. I had some problems with the monitoring mix, that made me be a bit distracted the first minutes but then I really enjoyed the show. We had another great show with people respecting us.

Once we get to the backstage, a girl who speak in Enlgish entered into our room and I thought.. yes yes yes.. biggrin.gif she said what I was expecting: "Metallica wants to meet Cirse and take a picture with all the band before they go stage".

We waited around 1 hour and suddenly James Hetfield appeared and said, where is Cirse? ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif Slowly the other guys, Kirk, Lars appeared, greet us, asked about the show, I gave our album to Lars, explained that we have been playing for 10 years, that it was our first album.. he asked: Are you very big here? I said: not that big! but we are working hard, and he said ok! I hope that Metallica opens your show any time.. haha and I said: no mate, Metallica is big for ever. In other words, they have been so kind with us, and very friendly.

The epic picture will be shared soon!!

Ok guys, sorry for the long post, but I consider you my friends and I wanted to share this experience which I wish that every musician that dedicates his life to play an instrument and to create music could feel what I've felt this weekend. smile.gif

I'm not sure about the feeling that you describe mate... but I can say I just noticed that the Stadium was full when I saw the pictures later. I didn't note the immensity of the show while we were playing. Even I didn't know that we were using the big lateral screens.

yes, off course our manager is in contact with both the promoter of the show and the band's manager. smile.gif

This is so awesome Gabe biggrin.gif Of all the tens of thousands of bands that exist in the world, only a few have managed to share the stage with Metallica. This is quite an accomplishment, especially considering you're not even in the same genre. This also definitely added a few inches to your Mini Me tongue.gif

But the real question we all have is, did you manage steal Kirk Hammett's Wah pedal?

You guys are on the road to greatness Gabriel, congrats once again! Cirse rocks! cool.gif Have you guys considered recording an album with the vocals in English to perhaps expand your fanbase internationally? Or have you already and I somehow missed it? I love the music, but I wish I could understand more of the lyrics. My Spanish is definitely lacking and maybe just good enough to get me by on vacation. biggrin.gif Thanks for sharing all the great pics and stories!

yes, off course our manager is in contact with both the promoter of the show and the band's manager. smile.gif

Perfect! biggrin.gif Now, as Mr. Rich said - the english album versions have to rise up in order to make you guys more well known in Europe and the USA. It would be awesome to tour together in Europe biggrin.gif

Yeah, this is something that we have been thinking during these 10 years. We did some experiments, but never very seriously. We are even trying to reach other Latin American countries. It's difficult and slow when you don't have support and money. We should do some promo gig in México and other countries but it would mean a lot of money to take all the band and the team there. We couldn't do it yet, and we didn't found promoters interested in doing it. I think that this same thing could happen with other countries with the English versions... not sure. We are working hard, and English versions are on the list.

I also talked in other thread about some prejudices that Argentinean people has with local bands that sing in English, that's another thing that makes us think on it twice.

Sorry for the late "congrats" but I didn't see the news that you played the shows until now! Reading through your experience and seeing all the pictures is just amazing. smile.gif It is great that Metallica took the time to meet you guys. The whole experience must have felt surreal.

Sadly, not singing in English does seriously limit the ability of the music to "TRAVEL" as well as it might otherwise if it were sung in either Mandarin or English smile.gif

What's interesting is that it's not just American and British listeners that want songs performed in English, it's pretty much the whole world that prefers it. It's really because English has become such a ubiquitous language that a person in Slovakia probably would rather have music performed in English instead of French, simply because most of the other music they have been exposed to has been in English.

It's also why this Swedish guitar site is in English and not Swedish tongue.gif

I understand perfectly, as we are in the same situation in respect to knowing what we need to do, but lacking the resources at the time being. I would try the following strategy - promote the English versions only outside Argentina and Latin America in general and see what happens. Your fan base can't be angry with you for trying to reach other places of the world, can they?

Hey friends! I have some awesome news for Cirse. This March 29th we will be opening for Metallica!! The show will be done on a big stadium for 55000 assistants, it's already sold out and we are the only opening act that day! On 30th, the band Carajo will be playing.

This is like a dream come true for me... I've never thought I would be sharing stage with one of the biggest rock/metal bands ever. smile.gif smile.gif

Check the stadium where bands like Black Sabbath, Gun's & Roses, U2 and Pearl Jam have already played... ohmy.gif

you are living my dream man thats AWSOME!!!

This photo is unreal Gabe. I asked Ben if he was high on life so I have no more expressions left for you, but I can tell you my arms are seriously blue after pinching myself excessively!

It must have been a valuable lesson to see that even these unquestionable musician Gods have their human sides as well (or do they?!)

hahahah thanks for your words Kris. You're right, making contact with them in this way makes you see their human side and you finally discover that they are very talented guys, who were born at the right place, at the right moment, who followed a dream and that have been working very hard for lots of years. They deserve everything they have.
