GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ What Gmc'er Lives Closest To You?
Posted by: purple hayes Jan 14 2009, 03:34 PM
I live in suburban Atlanta, population of about 5,000,000 and the closest GMC'er that I know of is David Walliman and he lives almost 150 miles (~250KM) away.
Seems like there should be someone closer.
Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Jan 14 2009, 03:36 PM
I remember seeing another GMCer once that was from Nottingham so I guess he'd be somewhere between 0 and 5 miles from me.

One of the first things I did when I joined GMC was try to do a search for members near me. Alas, we have no such feature as of yet. Many people don't even list their location, for whatever reason.
But I'm probably the only member from New Mexico, until I can get some flyers out around Albuquerque.

I just think that's a little odd.

I wish there was someone near me. I know there are a few people around North and South Carolina, I think though that the closest to me is in Hickory, which is about a 3 hour drive from me (though I actually pass that town on my way to another pretty often). Unless anyone lives in raleigh/durham/chapel hill.

I was thinking the same.
Just a little something paranoid to think of. If I were a burglar I'd love this idea. I can read peoples signatures for what they own, find their address (depending on exactly how this would work, idk), and then wait for people you declare in the forum that they are on vacation.
So keep your address a bit vague, maybe just a city rather than your street. I guess the odds are on our side but better safe than sorry all gear stolen.
Posted by: Smells Jan 14 2009, 11:02 PM
should be working now, just click on the map
Edit: as Micke said, keep it vague, ya never know
Posted by: Mandos Jan 14 2009, 11:11 PM
Yeah, there's no reason to make it more detailed than city since this is a global community.

Since you are the one who created it, you are the only one who can mark on it, unless...
Finally implemented one of the most requested features ever: now the users are able to edit or delete the markers they placed, with no need to ask for the map owner's help. To activate that feature on your map, just go to the admin area. The new option is called 'Allow users to edit/delete own markers'. Enjoy!
When a user clicks, he should see this:
Posted by: Emir Hot Jan 15 2009, 04:36 AM
This is probably the reason why the map is not working.
You can create several types of maps like:
1 Create a map to allow your website visitors to place pins
2 Create a bookmark-map: a map where only you can post
3 Create password-protected maps, and share them with your friends
4 Upload photos along with your markers
5 Integrate your Guestmap with Flickr, and get your photos on the map
6 Show your guestmap inside your own homepage!
I think the problem is that for this map option 2 was chosen. Can that be changed to option 1?
Posted by: jdriver Jan 15 2009, 07:25 AM
Yes, and since it can be embedded, let's have it here on GMC!

Awesome Tony, I felt alone with all the country for myself
I spent a year living somewhat near you, in Málaga, a few years ago. Loads of sun there!, so different from the north
By the way you are the closest to me in the map so far
, until some more spanish/french/portuguese members add themselves!

Not very sunny down here today - though probably better then at your end (looked cold on TVE1 weather last night
).

But not as lonely as Col Roberts may possibly feel!!!

I've put myself on the map
Noone else from any part of Ireland (yet), so my closest GMC relatives just now are OC and DeepRoots.

Hedel, Holland! It's close to the bigger city 's-Hertogenbosch, or Den Bosch.

I live in South ALabama close to a very small city called Enterprise but about 4 hours from Atlanta and go to a lot of shows at a venue called the Masquerade, so it's very possible I've been to some metal shows in Atlanta with some members here and never knew

I added it as well. I have a few neighbours there

I was in a band that played a show at the Masquerade about 15 years ago.

Good idea. I put my marker on the prison that is right around the corner.
They call it a medical center, but it is a prison. I've been in it.
Just to play softball against the ....uh guys that live there. For some reason they were really good at it. Good times.

I noticed there are some interesting people on GMC after taking a look at a few of them on the map. Who would've guessed?

I'm the only person in the southern hemisphere .... so far. Is there anybody else out there?
Posted by: jdriver Jan 16 2009, 07:53 AM
Dang, I thought there was someone close, but it's only Skennington's misplaced marker. DOH! Anyway I'm on there in New Mexico as an alien, since I am near Roswell. If you zoom in real close on satellite, you can see my ranch including the loop driveway at the bottom I built to turn around my truck.

Nice feature the map!
I just learned Rockztar lives in a town nearby!
Posted by: Joruus Jan 17 2009, 02:06 AM
It doesn't load for me
It shows the page, text at bottem, 'support us' button at the right, but in the middle is just a big white space...
I've tried everyday since its posted here for about 10 minutes per try!
No one else got this problem?

I live in suburban Atlanta, population of about 5,000,000 and the closest GMC'er that I know of is David Walliman and he lives almost 150 miles (~250KM) away.
Seems like there should be someone closer.
What part of Atlanta are you in?
I live around Buckhead if you're familiar with that area of Atlanta. =P

Reset all your browser settings to there defaults (security, advanced, everything). Make sure you have the latest Flash and Shockwave pluggins. Also update your Java if you haven't in a while and then reboot and give it a go.
Hope that helps

Mac users, in case any haven't figured it out, need to Cmd-click to bring up the Marker set box.

This map is starting to look funny. Those icons look like we are 2 big rugby teams Europe vs USA I think there are more of us.
This guy "ztevie" lives so far from everybody it looked scary a bit especially if you think of temperatures in that northern part of Scandinavia

What!? This is the center of the world!
Actually, the only reason the climate here is ok is because of the Gulf Stream that cross the Atlantic from the Mexican Gulf up to northern Scandinavia. Without it, we wouldn't have any summer to talk of, and the winter would be much colder..
Other places on the same latitude is Sibiria, south Greenland, north Canada, north Alaska... But because of the Gulf Stream I can safely say we have much warmer climate here in scandinavia...
Some friends in a band played on a Festival weekend here a few years back. It was December, -20 C. And they played outside!
They had these thin finger gloves on, but appaearantly it was rather cold anyway, and I can imagine the instruments and other equipment took some beating... Guitar neck warping, anyone...?
Actually nothing happened, they only played for half hour... A 3 hour set may have been an other story?
