Just wanted to share an old clip. This guy was very famous in Sweden, and I guess some other countries too. He was born in the Netherlands, but came to Sweden at the age of 11 and learned not only to speak Swedish fluently but also completely master the language in any way possible.

Anyway, my point is that in this particular song he tunes his guitar to Drop D. Not because he wants to play power chords with one finger, but because it's convenient to have a low open D for this song in D major. At 4:17, he does the actual down tuning on stage. (Before that, he's just talking, not interesting at all if one does not understand Swedish.)

Not so fast Cos, smile.gif Unchained from 1981 by Van Halen is a drop tuning maybe drop Db or C but dropped nevertheless isn't it?
Check how Ed comes in too early biggrin.gif
Also I am fairly certain early American blues players were using drop tunings well before that. wink.gif

Bet that riff sounded heavy as hell live ! It is a real sexy riff cool.gif

I really don't dig being able to see Roth's butt in such detail though... spandex might have been nice for the ladies but there were still a lot of guys in the audience too... tongue.gif
