No matter how much licks I learn, I always go easy and avoid shredding. I've just wondered if it's because I practice the licks so much that I avoid them because subconsciously, I see them as exercises?

Who knows!

I'm sure there are many more who share a problem similar to mine.

Let's discuss.

You might need to put them into the context of a solo, it all good to practice licks in isolation to nail them but you need to practice getting to them within a solo at where they will fit over the chord progression.

Just train yourself to play more notes fast, fast fast, and no matter which ones,just fast, anyway when u shred nobody'll hear what you're playing

I don't agree with this statement. Listen to players like Andy James, they shred like no one can and you can hear every single note very clearly.

This paragraph leads me to the question: Is it a case of you can't shred.. or just don't shred ?

If it's the first one then the answer is obvious.. learn how to do it - more practice.

If it's the second one then my answer would be why do you need to shred ? If you want to, do it.. if you don't you don't have to. Maybe you express yourself perfectly well without the need to add loads of flashy notes. There's nothing wrong with that. If you can write great phrases and solos with what you've got then that's all that matters.

If you feel like your technique and repertoire is lacking then you will need to get a bit more specific about what you want to improve. Picking, sweeping, tapping, legato etc..

Here's the problem with the young/new players I find/discover. It seems like they all depend on the "flashiness" of their playing and people are impressed by their technical ability instead of listening to (random example) Gary Moore, and relate to the song or feel/think of something. Can anyone relate to this?

PS - Yes, I'm aware that sometimes a guy simply wants to listen to music just to nod his head or stomp his feet to a good riff or drum beat.

This is a great thread mate. I usually get bored soon when I hear shred guitarists that concentrate mostly on technique and fast licks. That's why I mostly listen to bands with singer, or more musical instrumental bands like Explosions in the sky, The Best Pessimist and other post-rock bands...

My question is... you say that you can't shred, but I think that the correct name of the topic would be: I don't want to shred.

I find the new thread created also very interesting, I'm curious to know which guitarists are recommended there.

an old proverb says faithful are the wounds of a friend, it means even though it might hurt it is what needs to be said, so I mean this in that way and hope you don't take offense but use it to grow
I think you are using your theory so you don't have to learn how to shred(because that final step is very overwhelming)
looking at your wrist , your upstroke look like it might need a little help, so that you could get a smoother alternate picking motion when changing strings
