I heard about crate before but always wanted to try one out. Anyway for a halfstack it seems realy cheap, though we all know that the money might better be spend in a combo. You need to check this amp out and tell me how its sound is. If you are searching for something cheap which is loud enough for gigs, it might be a good choice!

But wait for the masters they´ll know what to do smile.gif

Small to medium? This would blow away those venues no problem if you ask me! The question is will you really use this much power in the club. In small/medium venues if you go through PA there is no need for a big amplifier, 2x12 combo will do the job. On big venues 4x12 is a good solution, but even then 2x12 can be good if you have a HQ 2x12 cab that matches the equipment well and produce the sound that you need.
If you play for example on a medium sized club/venue (300-700 people) and you are playing without PA system then a 120W halfstack would serve it's purpose nicely cause you will have plenty of power to be head from the stage. But if you have PA system and play in smaller clubs 100-300 people, or medium venues 300-700 people then smaller amp would be good as well. This creates a choice for you then, you either want a smaller more easy to carry around and possibly more quality amp, or you can get this and cover all possible situations, but with a bit more hassle with transport and possibly less sound quality.

I don't know about Crate amps but I don't think you will be happy with a halfstack that's that cheap...

IMO the best Death Metal amp for a reasonable prize is the ENGL Fireball head with one of the heavisest distortion I've heard so far and also a great clean (in case you need it) Unfortunatley it's far away from your price range but it sounds like some amps that cost twice this much. I would consider saving up!

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...Head?sku=481520

If you can not wait to save the money for a really good amp, the bugera amps are still decent amps at low prices. They offer areal bang for the buck but the low prices result in a poor built quality.

Of course not mate, I'm here to help, I'm giving suggestions so feel free to do with the info whatever you think it's right. I haven't heard the Crate amp so I really cannot comment on that, but I agree with Zakk when he says that at that price you cannot expect a very good sound quality. But definitely try it out if you had a recommendation from your fellow player, it may prove to be a good investment. You are the judge of course.

I would also agree with jer, and recommend that you tryout some Randall amps. They are really good for metal and loud enough for gigs. I've heard this amp on gigs lots of times, and it is very well defined amp with lots of gain. Also I've recorded my first album using Randall RG75G3 model and it can handle clean and distortion great. I think Randall RG100G3 Plus is a serious candidate for you, so if you have a chance try it. It's a bit over your price range but looks perfect to what you seek. \m/ biggrin.gif

cheers,
Ivan

Ok I played two amps today and I think it is down to these two

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-DFX?sku=483177

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-Amp?sku=483066

I didn't get to play the Marshall for much (getting that chance tomorrow) and the Line 6 seems nice and I have heard good things about it from another music shop but what do you guys think

That Crate was more of a fall back if couldnt find anything so... pros and cons

DISCUSS XD

Also the Marshall, when paired with a cab it was around the same price as the Line6.

Edit:

Hmm. That Randall Ivan mentioned seems really nice, but darn it, I have a weird feeling baout buying it when i havent played on it. Blah decisions, decisions..

Crate's distortion, imo, is pretty fizzy and shrill. One of my friends used to love his Crate, though, until he found a Bugera.

I know nobody who plays that particular Marshall, but I've always been curious about it myself.

I also know alot of people who hate Spiders, even the hybrid model (which is really overpriced imo). I never played the hybrid though.

If you really want something that's guaranteed to fit your needs, you could look up Bugera amps. They're full valve for less than a grand, but they don't sound like.

OR, if you could save up a little while longer, you could go for a Carvin V3. Its a beast for metal biggrin.gif

Yeah that imo the best thing to do: SAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE

You will get something sounding much better, otherwise you'll be searching for a new amp in a couple of month because youre not really satisfied... The Peavey 6505 standard head, the Engl Fireball and the Carvin V3 are pro Metal beasts at a still very reasonable prize!!!!

>>>Incoming Protipp: In the next two months there is going to be a peavey 6505 1x12 combo being released that crushes both amps you mentioned: http://www.peavey.com/news/article.cfm/act...52/20091501.cfm

60 watt crushing all tube metal at 719$ !!!!

I really want an ENGL, if i could have it any way I would have gotten one a long time ago. There is an ENGL (not sure of the model) at a shop that I intend on trying today but man those things are expensive, and saving for a bit more may not be an option. I'll let you know how it goes.

Why isn't saving money an option? (You can always go for the New Peavey 6505 with your money!)

I made the mistake of buying an amp too soon last year: I bought a randall from my first paycheck because it was the best I could get for my money; three months later I was mad at my self when I thought about what a great amp I could have had now if I hadn't bought the randall. I sold it and bought a great amp but I lost money unnecessary!

If you consider the engl fireball/powerball check out a blackmore/savage too. Those amps are voiced quite a bit differently. The savage seems to be less fizzy and a bit more organic to me. But you should really try at least one amp of both groups.

You should also check out the krank rev jr/rev sst. They might be an option too!

The reason saving isnt much of an option is because this is all on a loan from the parents (who were really trusting to lend me this much). I went went the Line 6 (posted the wrong link earlier, its a 212, which I guess is the same thing tongue.gif) and I think i made the right decision it sounds pretty good
