I dont really have a all time favourite... My "favourite" guitar player changes every week, I'd rather call it "the the guitar player who inspires me most at this moment"
Today it would be Andy McKee, but other days it can be Rusty Cooley or John Petrucci.
But if I had to say someone who is my all time favourite, it would be Paul Gilbert!

Top 10

1. John Petrucci
2. John Petrucci
3. John Petrucci
4. John Petrucci
5. John Petrucci
6. John Petrucci
7. John Petrucci
8. John Petrucci
9. John Petrucci
10. John Petrucci

Honorable Mentions: John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Allan Holdsworth, Al Di Meola, Steve Morse, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman.

Never understood the appeal behind Eddie Van Halen, saw him live a month ago and still couldn't understand why people think he is so great. He uses the whammy bar too much and can tap simple licks, the only style he knows is rock.

As for my personal favorite, I would definately have to go with either Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. Not sure which, though.

Yes! I have listened to rock music for about 7 years now and I have yet to see anyone match the talent and versitality of John Petrucci.

This dude right here comes near John's playing field: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATub40Npxik

Steve Howe is also really good.

I also like many classical guitarists, JerryC rules too.

But outside that, I don't really see the need to listen to anyone else besides Petrucci tongue.gif .

EDIT: Oh yea, Muris is also a really great guitarist, people on GMC should realize how good he really is!

+20

When another guitarist can write songs like this, master every style, shred at 220 BPM 16th notes, do a whole show with 0 mistakes, create super soulful solos, improvise 30 minute songs, write and play a song with 123 (literally) time signature changes and make 0 mistakes and still make it an awesome song, write super awesome riffs, and write very meaningful lyrics, I may reconsider John Petrucci being the greatest ever by unlimited miles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNp4tMcpM10

EDIT: Also never seen a keyboardist on par with Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy and John Myung are prospects for greatest drummer/bassist as well. What more does one need in a band?

Yea lol like I said in another thread, I don't think John Myung has ever lifted his eyes from the bass during a DT show, but thats ok, I don't think making a crazy wild show is what they are out to do.

I think it's because he started a revolution, showing the tapping technique to the big audience.
Also, he is a big reference for the hard-rock sound.
Don't limit yourself just analizying all the guitar players every time!! smile.gif
Remember that for most people - especially non musicians - the most important thing it's the MUSIC.
Some songs like Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love or Jump are evergreens now.
And I think every guitar player/musician would like to have written these songs (for royalties reasons also biggrin.gif )

Yea but what about Les Paul, Leo Fender, and Dick Dale, who pretty much popularized the electric guitar itself, you never see people mentioning them. For some reason I just really love DT, I don't analyze things that much, I just really really really like their music like you said.

I didn't know there was one guy already using my name tongue.gif But I just checked and he is actually quite good...

My fav guitarists: Jimmy Page, Slash, Augusto Licks, Kirk Hammett

Posted by: Tuubsu Mar 8 2008, 08:17 PM

Well you can see my inspirations in sig, But I can't stress enough How much bigger these three guys are to me than the other 6 in the sig:

Marty Friedman
Jason Becker
and
Eddie Van Halen

Marty; melodic playing, Exotic sounding licks, he has an exeptionally good ear and actually knows what the note will sound like before he plays it --> Awesome improviser.

Jason; IMO the only person living or who has lived in decades that you can actually call a musical Genius, once again IMO musically up there with legendary guys like Mozart, Paganini and Beethoven for example

Eddie; Theres no man like Eddie, he has a very unique style which is really cool, IMO Eddie Van Halen is the "master of the set" if you know what I mean.

And to shellshock:
I think the whammybar is one of the coolest things in eddies playing, maybe his tapping licks are simple but they sound really cool! Eddie has a lot of different Ideas in his playing; cathedral for example, the playing with the volume knob. And I've seen Eddie do some Extremely hard tapped harmonics licks also.... in a way this a little silly like we would be little kids comparing their favorite Pokemans laugh.gif

Yea, I'm familiar with both as Derek was in Dream Theater for a few albums, and Rick made some of my favorite Yes songs and solos (Roundabout, South Side of Heaven, etc.)

Check out this keyboard battle between Rudess and Sherinian.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4ids4rOegI

I prefer Rudess on this one and Petrucci's little blues-jazzy interlude thing was pretty tight as well. How they managed to keep 2 keyboardists, a drummer, a guitarist, and a bassist prefectly in sync with little to zero mistakes, even through this time signature changes is beyond me though.

However my favorite keyboardist is probably Kevin Moore, his work in Take the Time is amazing!

Posted by: mattacuk Mar 9 2008, 08:54 AM

Ohhh just a few for me, the two most obvious is Paul Gilbert and Bucket, but also I really like Alexi Laiho, Yngwie Malmsteen, Brian may and the Edge to name a few smile.gif

Paul Gilbert, Jimmy Page a close a second. I know technically Page isn't anywhere near Gilbert, but he was an amazing player for his time and mastered so many cool styles and sounds.

John Petrucci would be on here, but im so sick of his playing that i cant listen to it anymore
there are ALOT of rock, jazz, blues and metal players better than he is, and much better in their respective styles.

Idk, I used to think that when I first heard him, it takes a lot of Dream Theater listening to truely realize how good he really is. I don't see how one can get "sick" of his playing when it is always different. In an old thread I made, I said the same exact thing, that his style is too predictable, but that was when I had only listen to DT a couple of times. Sure there are jazz and blues players that are better than him in their own style, but you won't find any of them making awesome riffs as well as playing their style, or shredding at near the world record, while John Petrucci can do all three and so much more. Have a listen to "Three Minute Warning," it is a 25:00 or so song by Liquid Tension Experiment that was improvised entirely on the spot, I don't see anyone else even attempting something like that. Also JP has been invited to G3 several times and wiped everybody there clean. As far as metal goes, I've never seen any guitarist that is even on par. It is really all just subjective though, no one is really "better," they are just different. However diversity is a big thing for me.

Marty Friedman is also a favorite because he writes some of my favorite solos as well like "Tornado of Souls," and he is really great at improvising awesome solos.

Check these solos though, they will probably change your opinion of JP.
