I was curious to everyone's opinions on using EQ above and beyond your standard amp/guitar tone controls. Such as rack mounted or pedals.
Do you find it necessary to your own playing? Or do you see it as just a nice option but not important?

Just looking for opinions here. smile.gif

I think the best judge is you own ear. Whatever tone you want. Though Im a big fan of dialing in my own EQ.

Are we talking tone or recording?

Nah, not necessary really... But it can be a part of Your sound if You use it to the extreme and filters to get some odd sounds. Otherwise it can be handy in small venues for instance, when running a 4*12 it gets boomy in small places, and then You filter out some bass. I haven't using it for years, but I had one in the old days....

People use them in different ways. Some like to have an external EQ to manage their tone. Some guitarists, like Tom Morello, will only use the EQ for a lead volume boost.

Some amps have incredible EQ built into them, so I think they are really important when you are mixing in a studio. Live, not so much.

It is all preference, like I said: The only guitarist I know who specifically says he uses an EQ is Tom Morello and he says "I only use it when I wish to go to 11 " :-)

i do like to use eq's i think it's a thing of personal taste, i love to use it on the solos for examples, i boost volume and the most important thing (at least for me) when u are playing a solo, mid freqs.

eq's can help you to really make your guitar cut tru the mix, but the thing is, try to cut instead of boost, a lot of times you just gotta cut wink.gif

Paul gilbert uses his signature EQ to actually get clean sounds from a cranked dirty tube amp. Works like a charm I think, sounds really good to my ears.

EQ is good for adjusting the sound just right, and it can serve well in situations where amp's EQ is limited (like on tone knob for example).

I think EQ in the signal chain is a nice and useful add-on. You can then "sculpt" your overall tone more precisely to your needs (or venue/club/band needs).
