In this interview with the creator/owner of the company that makes the AXE FX processor, he intimates (without coming out and saying it) that due to price point issues with the main unit, "It's pretty clear where we have to go". The intimation seems to be toward a cheaper product. Also, as they have no software only option currently, one area of expansion for his biz would be to start selling plugin versions. But then again, he might be suggesting making a cheaper version of the AXE FX, or a some other product. I hope to heaven that it's gonna be availabe as a software app. He wrote the software himself and the AXE FX editor is essentially the control interface for buidling patches, it just doesn't process audio. Turn on audio processing and bingo. Just adding a feature to an existing app creates an entirely new product/market.

Here is the interview from Guitar Interactive Magazine.

It'll be interesting to see.

I know a lot of people have wanted an Axe Fx lite floor unit, where you can hold maybe 5 amps and 10 effects. But you can download.

In respect to the idea of a plug in, You can tell a lot of Cliff's sound quality comes from using the right components (2x Tiger SHARC processors and quality converters) as well as his genius-like agorythms, with a plug in he will be giving up all that, so if he does go the plugin route will had make it more like the UAD card type thing.

I read about the idea of a software version a while ago.

though I'd still go with the hardware one (if I ever had enough money biggrin.gif)

Actually, depending on how he does it, he wouldn't have to give up anything at all. For example, as you mentioned, if he did it through UAD, they could still use SHARC processors and the same exact algorithms. It would mean folks would have to buy a UAD dual card/box, but still way cheaper than an actual Axe FX.
