Hey guys,

So we were playing this "musical" nativity, and I have a couple of settings on my guitar, but usually what happens is I get this obnoxious, almost irritating tone out of the guitar on the high notes, it's got this twang to it..

Some songs I need a softer sound, and when I change the tone, and set it to the upper pickup by the body.. I get a nicer tone, but you can hardly differentiate between the higher, and lower notes.. I almost sound like a bassist rather than rhythm/lead depending on the song..

Has anyone got any advice/tips on this?

Thanks

Pierre

So what kind of guitar is it? Body wood, neck wood etc..

What are the pickups? Amp?

If you answer these questions hopefully we can give you a good answer biggrin.gif

The amp is an Ibanez TBX65R

the guitar is an Ibanez GRG 150 BKN - the neck is rosewood, the body is basswood and the pickup config is HSH (I'm not sure what make tho, they came with the original guitar)

this is the guitar basically
http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/GRG150

but its the black finish smile.gif smile.gif

So how long has your gear been sounding like this? I just looked up a review on Musicians Friend and somebody else seems to have the same problem, you can check out the review here:

http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product...-Amp?sku=480944

It could very well be your amp has crapped out on you sad.gif But thats always an excuse to get a new one biggrin.gif

Can you make a quick youtube video showing us what you are talking about in terms of your tone? It would make diagnosing it much easier.

Possibly you are hitting certain note that vibrates the whole amp making it sound bad. Does it happen on different amps using same guitar?

Hmmm.. Okay, well my phone was struck by lightning, so I can only post it when they fix sad.gif (I'm on the forums on my mobile tongue.gif)... As far as other amps.. Hmm I'm not sure.. My friend has a line 6 and my other a cube, so I'll try it on those?

It could be lots of things, and I'm not quite sure how to imagine the noise based on your description. Can you record a quick audio with your mobile phone? Just a short audio, and send it as an attachment?

Hmm, I can barely hear what's going on here. I get some kind of hi-end noise is that it?

Is the noise the same when you are playing without an amp?

Yeah, sorry about that -- my laptop mic shuts down when it's too loud :$...

Yes, its that highend sound thats irritating me... no without an amp that guitar actually sounds quite nice..

I must mention, thought that I've managed to play it the last weekend with my podx3 attached, and I played with tones, and EQ settings,
its a lot softer to the ear now.. ?..

here's another one done just before: (this one, though is attached to my preamp, and the tone isn't as sharp)..

I hope you are not connecting your amp out to your mic. biggrin.gif

You have to put the amp pretty loud to get a good tone that will catch by the laptop mic. Even with actual studio mics, you have to place it at the proper place before the amp/speaker to get a good tone so I wouldn't really recommend using your laptop mics to record your sound. The best thing would be to mic up your amp and then use an audio interface to take in that input sound. If this is something you cannot do, then I would recommend you to try direct in using other devices like Line6 (USB connection).

If you don't hear it with only your guitar, perhaps it is something from the amp? Do you have a chance to try your amp with another guitar to see if your amp is the problem? I still cannot hear the noise, it sounds fairly good to me here on my speakers to be honest. It seems you did a good job micing the amp and covering the noise smile.gif Well, joke aside, could you put your mic somewhere near the speaker and see if you can catch as much as noise as possible? This would enable us to hear it, so we can try to help. I will do as much as I can, but with current sound, it seems like there is no such noise that would irritate my ears, as I said it sounds quite good smile.gif

Hahaha no.. I mean for this sound test I can't use my PodX3 -- usually I record through it, but this sound only happens through the amplifier (and live).. I play live sometimes with the pod, sometimes without, but recording always with...

That said, I can't seem to get that obnoxious noise (amped) to be picked up by my laptop Mic.. because the second it goes loud, my mic decides to go soft tongue.gif

Hmmm.. Ok, I'll try that... (unfortunately, the only other guitars I have access to right now are acoustic/electric's so testing on another guitar may not happen for a while sad.gif) ... haha thanks smile.gif... frustrating when you wanna show a bad sound and it comes out good.. hehe...

I'll try record again tonight..

Hey

smile.gif Sorry for the REALLY late, dead reply -- I got roped into doing a youth weekend (last w/end) and a wedding (this w/end) and I just met a girl :$..

So I've had like NO time

Anyway.. so I had my amped looked at: one of the cables was a little loose (problem 1)..

problem 2 was conflicting tone settings: the tone on the guitar, versus the tone on the pod versus the tone on the amp was making that really irritating hi pitch noise...

So.. I figured that out.. and played with the new sound at that youth weekend, and the feedback we got was basically that it was "the best the music has been at one of these"

so i'm really happy smile.gif

Thanks so much for the help & effort biggrin.gif

Pierre
