Finally got around to checking out GMC after nearly 8 months! VERY cool! I'm looking forward to learning tunz (though I'll need to concentrate a lot more).

Here's my short bio:
  • began playing guitar (messing around) @ 16
  • switched to bass @ 17 (guitars have too many strings, and I'm no good at it, so why not take the easy way out and just play bass? <<STOOPID ATTITUDE!)
  • played bass in a heavy metal bar band for two yrs. (22 to 24)
  • got out of music for a LONG time -- abt. 20 years (wow!)
  • got back into it, playing guitar/bass in my church's worship band (and not playing very well, I'll admit!)
  • saw Kristofer's lessons on UG (this blew me away! I learned more in 2 minutes of his vid than I had in 30 yrs!) and have finally decided at age 47 (gaak!) to learn how to play lead guitar well...so all you kids out there, you have no excuse NOT to be GREAT. You have a lot more time left than I do, so GO FOR IT!!!
  • within a week, the leader of the worship band commented that, "all of a sudden, it was like you woke up!" I applied a very small amount of what I had seen in a couple of vids to my bass playing -- what a difference in both technique and confidence!
  • now that we have disbanded, I want to try my hand at playing lead somewhere with more energetic worship music (e.g., Kutless, Tree 63, Audio Adrenaline, etc.)
Satriani and Vai are my favorite guitarists (yeah, try and fit that in with pipe organ music dude!), but I enjoy various types of music -- except Rap. [Admit it: rap isn't really music -- it's poorly-written poetry.]

I'm a huge fan of Kristofer's teaching ability! Thank you so much for this site Kristofer. Absolutely a-may-zing!

Cheers!

Wow! I was worried that I'd be the oldest guy here at 41! I too have been out of music for many years. I signed on here because after a couple of days of free time, I learned a ton and for the first time in my life I'm feeling the guitar, not just banging on it.

Good luck to ya'!

Rock On!

P.S. You'r right-on about rap...

To play metal you need terrifying guitar skills.

To play rap you need a terrifying childhood
