GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Imitating Vocal Lines With The Guitar

Guys, I was thinking to make this idea the following topic of my video chat session next Thursday, but first of all, I was curious to know if you ever tried it

I see a lot of benefits coming from this approach:

- you get really good at articulation
- you have a pretty decent idea on note choices that work well over the given chord progression
- once you nail the lines, you can start developing them and create your own nice phrases which can be a tremendous weapon in improvisation

What do you think?

We'll discuss this in detail next Thursday and gather some ideas in this thread!

I think this is a really good idea.
When I improvise, especially with modes (I find it easier to get a vocal effect from pentatonics) I try and come up with little songs in my head that will help steer the guitar in the right direction.
It can be so difficult to think of melodies on the fly so any direction in this area would be helpful.

Sometimes I love to sing in unison with the guitar, a great way for a hearing exercise !

this is a fantastic tool,it ties the song to the solo and if people like the song they can more easily get envolved with the solo
this song is already in GMC radio but I thought it is a good example
the solo starts with the lyric line and is followed by the guitar riff , I think it ties everthing together well
what are your thoughts?

I use to constantly do that with Nightwish and Blind Guardian. With Nightwish, you will find interesting ways to make very expressive vibrato - and with Blind Guardian, well Hansi has some of the best vocal melodies - Period - so you will learn some really abstract melodies which can vary over keys in strange ways.

I agree with all you guys - very handy tool for both ear training and articulation - can you sing and remember your solo? If the answer is yes, chances are, more people are able to do it as well!
