Ibanez is showing a prototype FANNED FRET guitar @ NAMM. I would LOVE to have a fanned fret ibby!!!! Especially a FANNED 8 STRING!!!

What is the point you ask? The fanned frets allow the higher strings to bend easier while allowing the lower strings to have higher tension for better tone. IT's a great way to build extended range guitars. Having played wads of 8 strings guitars I can tell you honestly that fanned fret 8s just play better IMHO and are more expressive instruments. Whaddya think?

Are my eyes playing tricks on me? Does fanned frets mean the neck is tilted? Looks tilted when I watched it on my tablet? If so it looks strange. Do you think it will catch on? Like when I saw the guitars made with the wavy frets ( can't rember what it's called) I just dont see how moving from a traditional guitar neck to something so different would be comfortable when playing. But as time goes on and people get innovative they come up with some cool shit.

The frets are tilted smile.gif Thats what "fanned fret" means. It allows the neck to be longer for lower strings and shorter for higher strings. Most folks will not want a guitar like this, as you say, it just seems strange smile.gif But there are folks who would love it, like me smile.gif

Try to get a FANNED FRET if you can smile.gif OTherwise, the string tension is such that it almost inhibits ones playing. The needed scale length makes the string tension a bit high and can make the instrument less expressive IMHO. THe fanned fret fixes this by allowing shorter scale on the strings that get "bent" the most smile.gif

The iron lable 8 is one of the best 8 strings they make!!! These fanned fret jobs are just prototypes. They may not be on the shelves for a few more years.

So enjoy your 8! smile.gif

True enough.

I'm currently playing my 7 string schecter though, tuned G C G C Eb C D for a bit of fun. Gives some interesting options and is quite fun.

Well spiff!! smile.gif I've had THREE DIFFERENT 8 STRING GUITARS so far and I have to say I find myself playing my 7 string instead. My 7 string ibanez is 25.5 s scale which is the same as my 6 string so it still feels like a "lead" guitar. Most 8 strings are around 27+ which makes the string tension a bit much for expressive playing imho.

The only guitar so far that felt more like the 6 was the RUSTY COOLEY at 2.65 scale. The problem was the the 8th string didn't behave as well as it did on my ibanez 27 inch scale. It was a bit floppy and you were limited by the nut in terms of what gauge you could use.

The fanned fret approach allows the best of both worlds. 25.5 scale for high strings, 27 or 30 for low strings. Unless one understands the basic idea behind fanned frets, it just looks like a "funny" guitar. Once you have experienced some 8 string instruments and various scale lengths (as you have done with your 8) the entire thing starts to make more sense.

I liked my RUSTY 8, but I did end up selling it to try to fund a fanned fret guitar somewhere down the line. Then again I ended up selling most of the guitars I bought last year. They were all fun, but none were "keepers". smile.gif
