GMC Forum _ Cosmin Lupu _ Dieterle's Begginer Bash-out

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 25 2012, 08:45 AM

Hello hello smile.gif this is your very own personal mentoring thread and I would like to start off by telling you that what you told me in the PM is possible if we focus on a few areas such as rhythm, some techniques - which ones would you prefer? and some theory wink.gif

How much time are you able to dedicate to guitar playing each day? It would also be awesome if you could record yourself so I could hear and see how you play smile.gif

all the best and let's rock!

Hey man! The video and audio quality are just good to work with and you have a very good tone on that strat wink.gif

We could start working with simple rhythm and lead lessons focusing on rhythm articulation and phrasing, so that you may slowly but surely reach your goal smile.gif

I noticed your hand is moving a bit to much when strumming - the right hand I mean smile.gif

What would you like to start with - rhythm or lead?

The style of the guitar in your lesson Katalonia is real touching .

All this kind of Pagan music style - however it calls is real vibration inside - love it .

The only thing what makes my hesitate are all this different tunings in this guitar style.

Anyway its real impressive .

Have good time cool.gif

hey man, this would make the song be played in Dminor, this means we could keep the same positions as in the tabs and play the song on a drop D guitar smile.gif wold you be ok with using the tabs in the katatonia lesson as they are acccurate? : )

Posted by: Dieterle Mar 29 2012, 06:17 AM

Good morning Cosim !

Yes Katatonia rolleyes.gif Great !

Lets get into it .

Next week i will go with my wife to city for some shopping and by the way i look for a good guitar tuner who can tune every note

i think a chromatic one should be right or am i wrong !?

For dropped D i don't need !

Can you give me information witch tuner is good for long time ?

I have got 2 good guitars and one i will then tune for lower tunings .

This week i start with dropped D and after buying my tuner we try the original Katatonia tuning biggrin.gif
I really looking forward to that
thank you very much! Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Mar 29 2012, 08:24 AM

Hey Dieter smile.gif yes, a chromatic tuner is what you need, but for the drop A tuning in which the Katatonia lesson is composed, you need a baritone guitar or thick strings on a regular guitar. You could contact thefireball, here on the forum, as he transformed a normal guitar into a baritone smile.gif this is why I thought we could use the drop D tuning so that you may be able to tackle the lesson in an easier way.

If you want, we can also tackle something easier in the mean time, so let m know, k?

Hi Cosim ,
here my first clip about catatonia lesson in dropped d huh.gif

Lots of mistakes - but its important for me that you see those problems mellow.gif

I have real fun with that lesson and keep on doing it . smile.gif

The lesson includes a lot of elements what is hard for me but good to go on it .

Rhythm - Palmute - melody - speed and those changes from part to part .

At this step its first important that i nearly know the notes and tabs in mind - now i can get into the parts cool.gif

I enjoy it and thank you a lot for standing behind!

hey Dieter!

let's start off with the main riff smile.gif I think you understood it a bit wrong as it doesn't quite sound this way.

Take a look over the GP file attached in the lesson and try the following things:

- at the bottom of the screen where you will see each instrument on a separate track, double click on the distortion guitar track and set the tuning to drop D (if you encounter problems I will provide a screenshot) and choose not to adapt the forms to the new tuning, when the software asks you.
- now the guitar is tuned into drop D and you can alter the tempo from the mid right corner - where you will see a metronome logo with yellow smile.gif

The idea is to try and play along with the GP file tongue.gif

what say you?

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Apr 2 2012, 09:25 PM

Hi Cosim , i changed the guitar tuning in guitar pro 6 it was bit different as you wrote

1. your gp file has only akustik guitar and no other instruments
anyway

2. i changed that guitar tuning into dropped d and didn't let change the transcription so the note positions are at the same place
only the guitar sounds different .

now i start with gp exercise and the first part show you soon on vid for control cool.gif

thank you !

Hi Cosmin ,
yes you are right with what you say about my record van halen...

i must concentrate to much about where to put my fingers and than listen to the rhythm needs more time

recording too with garageband and i movie two separate line and one too for the backing track

mixing together a nother experience rolleyes.gif

i will keep on exercising that van halen one to make later on ... a better record smile.gif

Your Katataonia style lesson i stil like but by now i will to stay with standard tuning to get more into music

I must start from the kindergarden on step by step i recognized.

Have a good day Dieter

Hello Cosmin,

i didn't finish , van halen yet and still working on it - will take more time for record now,

but too ,

i think now i would like to go back into Katatonia in slow motion tempo 40.

Dropped D tuning with my strat , i think its the right guitar for further tuning styles.

Would you take a look at me ?

In a week or so i record my first exercises here on thread .

All the Best !

Hey Dieter! I had no idea that it hit you so hard smile.gif But I am glad! I am friends with these two girls called 'No'mads' - they are a Romanian medieval music group - one guitar and one violin. They re-orchestrated this Estonian traditional song here:

The guitar player is an old friend and after having the dream and listening to a lot of their stuff, I came up with the 'Fairy's Dance', which I am happy to know that you like so much.

Well, I am looking forward to see your take and in the mean time, if there's anything else you need, I am here and all you need to do is ask smile.gif

Good morning Cosmin!

Just saw and did hear your new lesson about modes , very interesting !

Right now i still work on helloween lesson what is hard for me , but i like to play this song because it is fast and i am not used to play things like that - but i wanna make this One with Gabriels help.

I started other lessons too but its to much right now and helloween was the first one i did try - long time ago rolleyes.gif -and should finish it now.

Only one lesson after the other working on for GMC record is enough for me wink.gif

In between time i like to play around and maybe participate on a Collab its relaxing and fun .

Ok there is more to do for me !

Sins i am back from france there is a lot to do privat and at work and i took a while to get back into rhythm.

What helps me in between is studying some old Kata`s from Goju ryu - helps me to get back into feeling myself and after i am relaxed and energy is in balance .

This morning i recognized when i am listening and reading about your New Lesson ,
time to get into a line with studying and finding back on my way of guitar playing.

Could you help me to get into modes step by step i mean a kind of homework to find a line and routine to get into it and understand !?

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 24 2012, 09:18 AM

Hey Dieter!

Sure thing man - I'm also glad to hear that you are getting re-acquainted with the martial arts - yesterday's experience was INCREDIBLE for me! biggrin.gif

Anyway - regarding modes, you must know and understand that, everything is based on three things:

1) Learning to hear the differences between them - this involves ear training and knowing what scale degree is characteristic for each mode
2) Knowing where those notes are on the neck
3) Knowing how to combine notes which chords - that all goes down to understanding what is the actual effect of playing a certain note/ group of notes against a particular chord

Would you like to start this right now or first finish the Helloween lesson?

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Sep 24 2012, 01:33 PM

Hello Cosmin !

Yes it is time for modes now - lets start ! tongue.gif

The helloween lesson i do beside but i will not try anymore more record lessons at once - that break me down i recognized cool.gif

Alright Dieter!

Here's an introduction to the theoretical part:

What are modes? I will tell you what they are, but first I would be curious to know what you know so far:D Can you please give me a definition as you see it?

After that, you must know that the modes can be classified like this:

Major (the contain a major 3rd) - Ionian, Lydian, Mixolydian

Minor (the contain a minor third) - Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian, Locrian

If we look at the major scale - the Ionian mode, as it is also called, we will notice the following structure:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 -> these are the scale degrees of the Ionian/ Natural major scale

From this point we tweak this formula to obtain the other modes wink.gif

Lydian -> 1 2 3 #4 5 6 7
Mixolydian -> 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7
Dorian -> 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7
Phrigyan -> 1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Aeolian -> 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7
Locrian -> 1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7

By 'b' (flat) we understand that we raise that degree to which the 'b' is attached and by '#' we understand that we raise that degree to which the '#' is attached.

Now, let's try an exercise:

We have the C major scale (Ionian) and I would like to obtain C Lydian and C Mixolydian - knowing the above formulas, can you apply them over the C major scale structure (C D E F G A B C) and tell me what notes make up these two modes?

If there's anything unclear, please let me know smile.gif

Ok Cosmin here i go !

C Lydian :

C-D-E-F#-G-A-B-C F# a higher note

C Mixolydian :

C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C Bb a flat note

C Dorian :

C-D-D#-F-G-A-Bb D# one flat Bb one flat in the line !?

C Phrygian :

C-C#-D-E-F#-G-G# C# one flat D one flat G one flat G# one flat !?

C Aeolian :

C-D-D#-F-F#-G-G# D# one flat G one flat G# one flat !?

Locrian :

C-C#-D-E-F-F#-G C# one flat D one flat F one flat F# one flat G one flat !?

Ok huh.gif

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 26 2012, 08:50 AM

Hey Dieter, since these are minor modes, we will use flats! Please re-write these again with flats and after that, here is your second homework biggrin.gif

Knowing that each mode belongs to a step in the major scale - you can create each mode by starting on a specific step in the major scale actually:

Ionian - step 1
Dorian - step 2
Phrygian - step 3
Lydian - step 4
Mixolydian - step 5
Aeolian - step 6
Locrian - step 7

It results that in the case of C major, as the parent scale - we derive a series of modes out of it looking at each step in its structure:

C Ionian
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian
B Locrian

Which modes can be derived from each step of the E major scale for instance?

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Sep 26 2012, 05:59 PM

Hello Cosmin !

I took me a while to find the right way to think about it but here i hope it is the ONE! huh.gif ohmy.gif mad.gif rolleyes.gif

C Dorian:

C-D-D#-F-G-A-A#

C Phrygian:

C-C#-D#-F-G-G#-A#

C Aeolian:

C-D-D#-F-G-G#-A#

C Locrian:

C-C#-D#-F-F#-G#-A#

On Guitar fretboard the end A# should be between A and Bb !?

my fretboard picture shows me C C# D D# E F F# G G# A Bb B .............when i keep in one line of one string for example
mad.gif

Ok hope its now OK !

Secound and new part of homework i do after a little dinner a bit later today tongue.gif

Dieter

Posted by: Dieterle Sep 26 2012, 08:22 PM

E - A - B from E major scale

E Phrygian - A Aeolian - B Locrian the rest notes are with # !?

i hope !

Dieter

Hey Dieter biggrin.gif This is good but not that good, meaning that I would like you to use (cool.gif - meaning flats instead of # for the minor modes. Can you please transcribe everything regarding the minor modes, having this in mind?

When we are dealing with E phrygian A aeolian and B locrian in the C major scale as well as D dorian and the rest - meaning F lydian and G mixolidian are major modes. In this particular case - when C major is the parent scale, we do not have any flats or # smile.gif

Hello Cosmin , like that ?

The Modes of the C Major scale:

Ionian: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
Dorian: D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D
Phrygian: E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E
Lydian: F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F
Mixolydian: G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G
Aeolian: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A
Locrian: B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B

Modes out of E major scale

These are CORRECT! biggrin.gif Now, for E major - it's notes are E F# G# A B C# D# E as there are alterations in this scale - you will find the actual formula of any scale by applying the w w h w w w h formula (w - whole tone, h - half tone) starting from its root note tongue.gif Now that you know this, let's revise the second part of the homework.

Posted by: Dieterle Sep 28 2012, 03:51 PM

Hello Cosmin !

Wow , THESE ARE CORRECT - just made my day ! biggrin.gif

Haha i was thinking a lot of logical ways ohmy.gif , but the easy one was IT ! mad.gif

I am not using an excuse when i say my english understanding is sometimes complicated too - makes it a bit more confuse for me.

I decide to learn theory in english because its a english lesson too and of course the language of GMC .

Beside that i did try to go into theory in german - of course the same thing butttttttt.. many different names for all that stuff
i already start to understand in english -- so better i leave it mad.gif

OK her the E major scale you show me E F# G# A B C# D# E and than the modes:

E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#
F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-E
G#-A-B-C#-D#-E-F#
A-B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#
B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A
C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A-B
D#-E-F#-G#-A-B-C#

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Sep 29 2012, 07:58 AM

Ok! Correct wink.gif Now please apply the 'w w h w w w h' formula, in order to obtain the exact notes of the D major scale and extract its modes just like you did with E major and then name each one wink.gif

Ready? GO!

Cosmin

Alright Dieter wink.gif Now, can you tell me what the characteristic scale degree from each of D major's modes is? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dieterle Oct 7 2012, 06:14 PM

Hello Cosmin i hope i understand your question right !

I found something on wikipedia ,

numbers 1 to 7 on ionian D 1 is D and 7 is C# !?

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Oct 8 2012, 09:21 AM

Hehe, no no. When I say characteristic scale degree, I mean that particular note/ notes which give each mode its flavor smile.gif

In the Ionian it's the 7th, in the Dorian it's the 6th, in the Phrygian it's the b2nd, in the Lydian it's the #4th, in the Mixolydian it's the b7th and in the Locrian it's the b5th. They give this flavor usually when they are played agains the right chords, but for now, let's spot these notes for the modes of the D major scale smile.gif

Hello Cosmin my Great Mentor in Guitar and English Study laugh.gif

OK i do try what you want me to do cool.gif

characteristic scale degree D major :

locrian G

Hey Dieter smile.gif Well, my fault here smile.gif I forgot to mention a very important aspect: I also wanted you to spot the characteristic scale degrees for the D Ionian, D Dorian, D Phrygian, D Lydian, D Mixolydian, D Aeolian and D Locrian biggrin.gif using the same indications wink.gif

These that you found are correct! cool.gif And it's G for the B Aeolian.

Hallo Cosmin !

Lets do theory !

I will try now to spend more time with guitar study - playing and theory of course.

The last months been very busy and a bit hard for me ( job and family) but looks like i am getting in balance again .

I try to work only maximum half day time and spend more time with my family and myself the next years and hopefully rest of lifetime cool.gif .

So i always wanted to play guitar tongue.gif lets go !

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 10 2012, 01:36 PM

Alright Dieter! So tell me, if we would have this chord progression:

C major, G major - what scales could we play over them? Look at the previous discussions and tell me if you can figure it out biggrin.gif If yes, you Sir have a very intuitive mind!

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 10 2012, 04:02 PM

Ionian: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
Dorian: D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D
Phrygian: E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E
Lydian: F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F

and of course G majors lines too including F# !!

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 11 2012, 08:46 PM

Alright Dieter smile.gif

I have a practical assignment for you biggrin.gif

I would like you to play the G major scale on the neck horizontally and underneath each note please play the characteristic scale degree of the mode starting from the particular note. Example: G and F# in the same time - so you actually play the M7 interval of G. You will play one interval for each step of the G major scale. Please tell me if you understood the task biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 12 2012, 02:53 PM

Hello Cosmin !

Yes i understood what you want me to do !

G - F# is ionien

G - E is dorian

G - A is phrygian

G - C is lydian

G - F# is myxolydian

G - C is aeolian

G - D is locrian !? huh.gif wink.gif

G A B C D E F# ionien scale so always each tone with characteristic scale degree F# too

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 12 2012, 06:25 PM

hey Dieter biggrin.gif Not like that wink.gif

I would say more like:

G - F# - this is the note that offers G its Ionian sound
A- find the note giving A Dorian its sound
B - find the note giving B Phrygian its sound
C - find the note giving C Lydian its sound
D - find the note giving D Mixolydian its sound
E - find the note giving E Aeolian its sound
F# - find the note giving F# Locrian its sound

wink.gif

Dieter

Hehe! Dieter, you got them right aside from E Aeolian which has C as the characteristic scale degree (that's the b6th) right? The Aeolian formula is 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7 - if you apply it starting from E, you get the E Aeolian mode.

Can you do the same thing but now based on having E major as the mother scale? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 13 2012, 01:00 PM

huh.gif Cosmin Aeolian b 6th biggrin.gif YES !

Ok here i go for E major

E - D#

F# - D#

G# - A

A - D#

B - A

C# - A

D# - A

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 14 2012, 08:53 AM

Correct!! biggrin.gif Good Job Dieter! Now - Can you please record yourself while playing these intervals? Harmonic - that means the two notes simultaneously and melodic - that means that you play them separately biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 14 2012, 05:23 PM

Hallo Cosmin !

You mean like that !? cool.gif

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 15 2012, 08:37 AM

Something like that - but I'd like to hear it slower - let the notes ring in order to hear their clash against one another and thus have a better idea regarding how they sound together smile.gif

Your next assignment will include chords and btw, I hope you make it to the v-chat tonight smile.gif

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 16 2012, 08:47 PM

Good evening Cosmin!

Sorry yesterday i couldn`t take part on video chat ,
but here a slower record of homework .

Heave a nice weekend !

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 19 2012, 09:36 AM

Alright Dieter! The whole purpose of this idea is to get used to the sound of different notes against each other. Now, the next step would be your following assignment:

Please record the following chords for one bar each at a tempo of 70 BPM and play the characteristic scale degrees against them. One bar, one chord, one note smile.gif

E maj - D#

F# min - D#

G# min - A

A maj - D#

B maj - A

C# min - A

D# diminished - A

Deal?

Cosmin

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 20 2012, 04:31 PM

Hello Cosmin here my next record !

And sorry i just recognized that i wrote the chords in german way what means for example :

A major = A F# minor = F# m !!!!

In future i try writing it the english way A major = A maj F#minor = F#min

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 21 2012, 10:45 AM

Very good Dieter! Tell me are you beginning to feel the differences and flavors of each mode? I can hear them in this exercise and I am curious if you started too biggrin.gif

Posted by: Dieterle Nov 21 2012, 02:43 PM

Hey Cosmin , yes it is very inspiring what you try me to show !

Keep on going ! tongue.gif

Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Nov 22 2012, 10:28 AM

Hey Dieter smile.gif Next step - are you up for the following challenge?

I will record random minor and major chords and play a certain note over each chord - you have to recognize the interval and the chord - it will go like this:

Step 1 - listen
Step 2 - tell me if it's a minor or major chord
Step 3 - tell me what interval is played (2nd, third, fourth and so on)

What do you say? biggrin.gif

Cosmin

Hey Cosmin could we go together into arpeggio study - exercise - technic

arpeggio sounds real cool within a solo .

And too i think a good exercise to practice speed - i want to get more in direction fast playing .

OK, have a Good Time !
Dieter

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jan 4 2013, 09:28 AM

Hi Dieter!

Well, I think that in order to start things in a healthy way - I should ask you if you already know what an arpeggio is? biggrin.gif

You can say that tongue.gif Well, Dieter, what say you if we start with a simple arpeggio lesson, to get your fingers acquainted with the idea?

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Acoustic-Arpeggios/

You don't have to use an acoustic guitar, but I am interested to push you into getting this flow together with the shapes - what do you think? Is this too difficult?

Howdy Dieter! This sounds good to me - you could improve it though by shifting the whole chord position at once. I notice you are already doing this to a great extent, but you should focus on doing it perfectly biggrin.gif

Let's see the next one having the words above in mind wink.gif

Hehe! Hey there Dieter - no worries mate, I figured it out biggrin.gif

Now, in here, you are rushing a bit just before shifting each chord, because probably you want to let it ring long enough before switching to the next. Pay a little more attention to the timing, ok?

Hey Dieter! Looks like the Professor has noticed that you are on the right track - I say so too and I think you should take a look over part 6 from the lesson below - please learn it and then play it against a metronome at a very slow tempo smile.gif You will see the major and minor intervals at work!
