well ok here is the difference with the new settings and input advise............about db on input and in the mix as advised by tony miro I could not for the life of me get some small crackels out of the guitar tracks think it was a result of a realy hot input to start with so i did them over.........kind of jammed with my self one time panned right the next panned left..................and i must say............im pretty tight lol couldnt believe i nailed every one of my own naunces in the same pitch and timeing........ but guess thats just the practice working for me

I also wrote new solos cause........the other ones where wearing thin on me ,,,,,,,but i finaly got a good solo sound well,,, one i like anyways ........came from jamming along with a bunch off old V H cds......the past few days........but i finaly got unchained down pat solos and all .......working with marcus lavendells lessons got me though playing and tapping at the same time without loosing the pic lol.....

so marcus if you read this thanks for teaching me that laugh.gif ...............

.so I guess my question is this ready for the mastering stage................or do i have to do anything else to it first...then again different speakers equal a different mixed sound.....but any advice will be well taken..................... pretty soon somebody is going to start chargeing me for advice lol

and as allways feed back is allways welcome good or bad.......................trust me i can take it lol

Hi Ballistic,
I A/B'ed Creep6 and the last Creep mix and to me Creep6 has better levels and more dynamics. The snare drum hits and vocals stand out better and the bass also sits better in the mix. I think though that there may still be some room for improvement (sorry there nearly always is I'm afraid).

The hi hat on my monitors are pretty much lost in the mix and I think that even though the drums are better the snare hits should stand out a bit more. Possibly a little bit of eq on the drums to add some sizzle to the cymbals and hi hat here might help and perhaps some gate to give the snare a really crisp hit. I'd also ride the fader a bit to up the level on the hits a bit - but only after you change eq etc if you do.

With the vocals I'd consider doubling the track and putting one through a small amount of compression and both through two slightly different reverbs (maybe use the tail on one take and the early reflections on the other). This might make the vocal stand forward a bit more in the mix and give it a bit more depth and width. If you do this though be subtle - you want it still to sound like a single vocal but just with a bit more body.

On the distorted guitar - if you can try to go for silence at the points where the snare hits are to help them really stand out. You might also want to play around a bit more with some software effects on the distorted guitar the outro - possible a bit of flanging. Play around here - you might find something that works or not.

It might be my imagination, but there seems to be some fading on the vocals in some places. The level seems to shift in a way that sounds like you have faded one vocal take out and overlayed a new one. Might be my imagination though.

What would help would be to see the individual tracks in addition to the mix - it's easier to see what is going with each individual instrument that way. But don't worry to much about this.

To a great extent your in, or close to, the area of diminishing returns - you get to a point where a mix can be improved a bit but the amount of effort may not be worth it. I'd try out some of the above and if they don't do it for you then master Creep6 as its overall a good take. The main bit is that you get a mix that you're happy with.

Cheers,
Tony

hi tony

well i thank you very much for your input.........and i like the sence that you pay attention to details ,, this in my mind makes you stand on a podium one step above the rest I can tell you have done your homework on this subject.....

I am going to try all of the things you mentioned,,,,,,,If they dont work out for the best in this mix it will just give me more practice in future mixes,,,,,the silence parts are a very good point..cause i realy want that snare hit to stand out......The hi hats well they are in need of replacement i think i have beat the sizzel out of them from years of hard use......but some good eq might bring out a bit of life to them ...

The vocals well doubleing the track i had thought about doing that as well just was not sure how to add effects to best suit them........the fadeing you hear is due to the fact of well me........I am waiting for my pop filter to come in,,,,,,,,so i was trying to controll the pops and breathes by moveing around the mic.......condensor mics are very unforgiveing.............in this manner lol ..........so i tried to compensate the fact of week lines and stong lines with automation and a small amount of compression to even it out a bit......I think to best solve that matter is just record them again when my filter comes in and just record two tracks at once...........

I was also wondering ........would it be in my best interest to set up busses for each track like one for vocals one for bass,, drums and so on............to keep a better hold on routeing and effects,,,or is this an impractical approach.........

well i have talked your ear off enough im thinking,,,,,,,,, i thank you for all the great avice you are willing to share to get me to where i would like to be in the world of digital recording....

thanks again and take care

Quick reply John,
(sorry not feeling too well atm).

Setting up busses for different groups ie 1 for drums, 1 for vocals etc - yes v good idea.

Also if you're still waiting for a pop filter a quick and easy substitute: take a pair of women's tights/stockings and wrap them over a coat hanger and put in front of the mic. The mesh on the tights/stockings will do the trick.

Tony

Ahh, the old woman's tights trick - can be difficult to explain to your wife though ...

sorry you are not feeling well...I have see that trick in the past about the tights lol ............my girlfriend will definatly wonder what im doing in the studio 7 hours at a wack then.........a closed door a internet conection and some of her tights lol ........might be a bit on the bizarre from her stand point but i would try to assure her i was feeling quite fine that day...........its a pop filter and its tonys idea and andrew said it was a old trick lol .....................at this point i would have dug myself into a deep hole with a odd look lol

but thank you both for the great advise..........and im going to set up some busses for the tracks ....one other thing i noticed was i recorded everything ..............in the sound cards pretty much general mode............ and not asio ...and only in 16 bit.................I didnt know i had that option to change it to asio 24 bit..............but i will know better next time ...........I have a audiophile 2496 m-audio card

It can go up to 24 bit/ 96khz operation...........but i have read all the debates on the matter about khz and most have a hard time with anything over 48khz being realy what they say it is .........but that is a different topic all on its own lol .........but a great one for a full drag out heated battle among many sound techs lol

well hope you feel better and i will talk with you both soon thanks once again

Oh and John,
make sure the tights are washed wink.gif .

For itb sequencers I'd always recommend using ASIO (preferably ASIO2) btw. The Audiophile 2496 is a good card btw.

As a personal preference I do pretty much all my recording at 44.1 24 bit. I at times have to use 48 kHz if I'm mixing for my wife - she has to use radio standard. To date I've never used 96 or 192 as I haven't seen a need. Having said that a lot of people do use 96 but personally I think it's more to do with fashion. (Along the lines of 'I've got it so I'm going to use it' or maybe 'my dad's bigger then your dad'.) I'd be interested in any opinions on this...

hmmmmm the 96 v.v 192 battle laugh.gif now that would be some good reading .......I have gone with the 96 when i first got the card along with the ablton 4 demo..that came with the card.........I did record a cd useing the demo all acoustic stuff angry folk music much in the style of ani diffranco lol .........

A friend of mine at work wanted to check out a copy so i burned him a cd and he was like that sounds so good just like froma real studio a few flaws but great sound ......I listened to it on the way to work to see if it worked and...........well lets just say i was amazed at how far i have come in mixing and sound quality cause to me it was flat and dead sounding...........But now thanks to alot of great advice you have given me i have the tools and know how to fix the mix and alot better mics..........that did not come from radio shack laugh.gif

but back to what i was saying on the 96khz I could not get the buffers set right and the latency was like 1 second long or something like that lol .................but i am glad that i have a good card i was wondering if i should get a new one i kind of like the firewire stuff...............well lets just say it looks and sounds impressive lol ..................but as i have found in the past its not all the pretty lights and buttons that gets the job done right lol ....

Well this weekend will be trying out the new ideas you have given me......i guess after i rake and cut the grass i was just informed of........love the fall but the work load is just crazy lol ..........I want to chop down all the trees and just pave the yard laugh.gif

talk with you soon take care

john
