Hi guys !

Its great to be back - I had some virus with my last computer as most of you know, so it took extra day to get new computer and put all the software in it.
Lets talk about this collaboration !


The idea is to run it like a class type of collaboration. Every future collaboration of mine will have specific topic chosen to correspond with backing track. That way you can focus soloing and improving specific areas that you need to work on.

For this first collaboration I choose SEQUENCE to be primary source of soloing. Sequence by definition is group of notes that are repeated trough different scale degree or moved trough scale. Why is sequence important ? Well sequence by itself implies repetition, and music without repetition is not good music period
We can have melodic , rhythmic and both melodic and rhythmic sequence.
For this collaboration I want you to focus on melodic sequence, that means if you play 3 notes you need to move those 3 notes trough the next scale degree etc. It also helps you use rhythmic sequence with melodic as you might be starting on the same beat and ending your phrase , which will make everything a lot easier for you that are starting with this!


Ok, now about collaboration.

Chord progression has 16 bars (with pre count bar total of 17), and its in the key of C# minor. C#minor is related key to E major key!
Here is the chord progression :

/ C# min/ B / A / B /
/ C# min/ B / A / B /
/ C# min/ B / A / B / /

Chord progression might remind you of billion songs you heard which is perfect cause you can have billion different sequencing ideas in it !
All along the watchtower is one that comes to my mind



Sign up in this thread , number of participants is open for all levels and styles.
You shouldn't have any trouble with this but if you do ask questions and I will answer them all.

I will also provide couple of my takes that demonstrate what I want you to do !

Deadline for your take is 23rd of February which gives you 10 days to record your sequencing ideas !

Hm... I cant promise you anything. I was thinking of running another parallel collaboration with different soloing approach. The reason why I specified 10 days for this one is because you don't need to compose over it, just display soloing ability using sequence
February is kinda short month so I would like to have takes earlier if possible if not next month is around the corner

Our takes should really be class room style. Create different licks and transpose them to the other chords. Not a solo including some sequences, right?

Andy great question !

Take I submitted was what I was looking to get from everybody. The idea of classroom type of collabs is to isolate specific area and work on it. I know there is plenty of other things you can do when composing a solo, but for time being focus on sequence and if you want record couple of takes - one with generic sequence one with composed solo implying sequence and other elements.
Keep in mind that stuff is extra and can only benefit your playing. For time being I am just looking for sequence used as much as possible over whole chord progression.

Ending. Because normally songs end on the root. I think that you did it in order to leave an open end for the next participant, right?

The soloing is a nice example for sequencing, btw. Well done! Pedja should write a positive comment on it... again!

It was improvised sequencing take so I have to be satisfied

Comments with this collaboration will be more focused on your note choice and if you used sequence correctly or not

Pedja,

do we need to follow the degrees strictly? In your take you do a sequence, then go a step below, then another step, then 1 step up again (i use "step" here because you have to keep it diatonic). What if I jump around (bearing the chords in mind) but do the same sequence for the B chords? This way I wouldn't stick to the root note (or a fixed interval from the root) as a landing point for each chord.

Thats definitely allowed !
I did sequence in the most simplistic and obvious ways possible so everybody can understand how easy it is to play and pull it off. I encourage you to jump around but keep in mind number or notes, melodic shape that you are using and rhythm as you want listener to recognize it as sequence

Have you read the guidelines ?
Just listen to my solo, I am just looking for demonstration of sequence. You can Diatonic Melodic sequence with same rhythm or change rhythm but idea is it has to move trough the harmony

Its quite simple really. I am asking everybody to record idea and then move it around trough chord progression. Since chord progression has 16 bars and is actually 4 bar chord progression repeated 4 times, I am asking for 4 ideas (one for each 4 bar section) to be taken and moved around trough scale and/or pentatonic/arpeggio/motif and make it fit the chord changes!

Listen to Andy's (wrk), Emir's and my take - you will get the idea what I am looking for

Paiva to some extent you had concept down ! There is definitely sequence but it doesn't sound like 4 different ideas over 4 bar sections, and you repeat your idea couple of times also.

I will post guitar pro file for my take here! Perhaps you can learn things from it as well.

Yes !

1st idea starts over C# minor then you move it trough B , A and B chords
2nd idea starts over C# minor then you move it trough B , A and B chords
3rd idea starts over C# minor then you move it trough B , A and B chords
4th idea starts over C# minor then you move it trough B , A and B chords

Thats what I did in my take and expect with everybody's take to be like that

( I wrote the backing as well, just to practice my transcribing skills...I hope the drums aren't too far off, I'm no drummer )

Pedja, I have a problem with my recording tools, and I believe I wont be able to solve this problem until tomorrow. This is unfortunate, because I traveled like 800 km for home to find this out! I am sorry, can I have a little extended time?

If not, I totally understand and respect your decision, but believe me this delay is really unforseen. I can hear you say: "Things like that happens if you choose to delay things until the last day and final hour!"
