I wish I could play songs by ear, but I guess that just comes with experience! laugh.gif

This may be the case for an experienced guitar player but for many people this is a way to more quickly identify correct fingering for a particular song. This fosters success and helps a person to develop an ear for music. I know if I was forced to sit and try to figure out every song I liked by trial and error using my inexperienced ear when I was a beginner, I would have lost interest a long time ago. It's beacuse of tabs that I was able to develop my ear and my sense of the fretboard.

I dont think is experience , its practice. When I began to play guitar in 1992 , there was no internet, it was very rare to have tabs so the only thing you could do was play the songs by ear. Im not saying playing the songs with tabs is wrong, of course there is a lot of songs that u need the tabs, but in this case if u try to play Like a Stone by ear Im pretty sure you will figure it out. What I do a lot is that I put on a radio station , and try to play over all the songs. Its just practice , practice and more practice.

I agree with you coffeeman. I started playing when I saved up enough money for a guitar back in 1983 when I was 13. I remember taking it home and sitting in my room and wondering what to do next. There were no resources at all. I couldn't afford lessons or to buy the tab books that were available at the time. I did learn to play by ear because I had to, but I have to admit it was somewhat frustrating.
