Ibanez Rg2228 Gk Vs Ibanez Rgir 27 Options

Hi guys! I'm in a bit of a dilemma and would really appreciate some professional advice on this. Basically I really want a 7 string, i recently got into Periphery and I love their stuff and want to make my own songs that are that heavy.

Problem is that in the city I live in (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) has one good store and that store only has these 2 guitars: Ibanez RG2228 GK and Ibanez RGIR 27.

The RG2228 I've been told has better quality wood in both neck and body, however it is an 8 string and I really don't like the sound of the 8th string, way too low for my taste. In addition, the neck is quite uncomfortable because of the 8th string.

The RGIR 27 has a very comfortable neck, even with the extra string. They both have EMG's in them so the pups are good in both. However, the build quality is supposed to be significantly worse. I don't really know as I don't notice these things, but I suspect the shop keepers are telling me this to get the more expensive one, the 8 string RG2228 GK.

As a final note, the RGIR is 700 euros and the RG2228 is 1400, so double the price.

I really appreciate any opinions you guys have on this. Thanks a lot!

Thanks a lot for your reply, you make a good point The thing is I actually liked the 7 string. The only thing that had me doubting it was the tremolo... I like to change tunings often and a floating trem would be a problem. However, for 60 euros I can order and get installed a tremol-no which solves the problem. It's just that those shop people put doubts in my head. Good sales people I guess haha

Ask Todd Simpson on the forums....he's the go-to guy for 7 strings...and he has a lot of Ibanez guitars

Yes, it was many variants of blocking tremolo, some of them cost $0

I think you have answered your own question here Alex! Why buy the more expensive 8 if you don't want the extra string?
Also, if you don't want the tremolo ask the shop to order you the Hard Tail version of the RGIR. It may not be quiye as good quality as the RG2228 but in all honesty they are pretty good for the money!!!

Long Story short, GET THE 7!!!!!

If you are new to extended range instruments, you should probably start on a 7. Personally, I prefer the 7 to the 8. It's more playable, feels more like a guitar. The 8th string is a bass string pretty much and doesn't make power chords very nicely with the 7th string so it's often used for Single string djent chugging and Tosin Abasi style tapping/hammering. Not to mention, unless you are pretty good at muting, the two low strings will RING constantly creating a low rumble/note. Muting 6 strings can be tough at first, muting 8 can be beyond hard.

Keep in mind that they have a lot of songs on a Drop C 6-string and they sound super heavy. Hell, Protest The Hero are suuuuuper heavy and they play in Eb Standard. Just something to note.

When I made the switch I bought the cheapest 7 string Ibanez made, the RG7321. It played great in the store and didn't sound to bad either so I just bought it on the spot. It was $400. As Todd said, if you're new to the world of extended range instruments you should NOT just jump to an 8. I bought the 7 and it took about a week to get used to. I need to get used to where all the strings were again, and more importantly how to manage the wider neck. If I had just jumped to an 8 string I may have just taken it back right away because it's such a huge jump. If one extra string is a large jump as it is, two extra strings is gonna feel like... well, to quote Aladdin "A whole new world".

If you wanna drop that much money on your first 7, be my guest. Just a warning that you should really spend some time with one in the store (20 minutes at least) and mess around before you decide to seal the deal. I've had my 7 for about a year now and use it daily. I play in a progressive deathcore band and we tune to Drop Ab so I use it all the time there, as well as writing for my own solo project. I also have done a lot of extended technique stuff that isn't as easy on a 6 (like slap, for example) so if you have any more questions about 7 strings, the transition, tunings etc. just let me know.

Really we said and good info here from ConnorGilks. Fine choice as well. The RG7321, is tough to beat anywhere near the price. The neck (Wizard II 7) is sublime and feels the exact same to me as my RG7620. The only substantial difference is the pickups and even that isn't that substantial. It's a great way to get in to 7 strings without going broke or finding out later you hate 7 string guitars and having to sell it and lose wads of money.

Your mileage may vary as they say, but IMHO that's the perfect first 7. Not to pricey, thin neck still feels like a guitar, not bass, jumbo frets, good pickups, etc. I"m probably a bit partial as I tend to really like Ibanez guitars for the necks and playability. Whatever you get, make sure to spend a little time with it before you buy it.
