Hi everybody!
hvidtsted wrote this as a comment/question to the "Pentatonic Scale 1on1 - Position Shifting"- Lesson:

"...The guitar teacher i had for half a year before i was sent to denmarks answer to a boarding school - allways told me it would be best if i used one finger per fret. eg: index for 4th fret the big mot... for the 5th fret ring for 6th and pinky for the 7th fret. hence is it okay to slide with the pinky? And what do you think about his advice?"

I wanted to bring this back because this is a question I asked myself several times.

I think you should experiment with different ways of doing it, i know some players who rearely use there pinky unless they REALLY need to, and then there are some like me, who use there pinky as much as any other finger, i find comfortable to slide with the pinky to further frets, but experiment around and try to figure out which way you think will help your technique the most.

PS
Just remember, dont neglect your pinky! its the hardest finger to build strength in so practice with it as much as possible is what i say!

And the title of this thread made me chuckle.... smile.gif

Good advice - and I'll add in that as you become more advanced you should start to practice spanning more than 4 frets with your fingers. These bigger stretches give you far more fingering options and mean you have to slide less ultimately.

I would also strengthen the advice about the pinky - don't try to do without it, use it from the beginning, or you may reach limits later on.

You should use pinky and work on it as much as possible! By developing pinky skills you open a whole new world on guitar. More access, more licks, more techniques and wild runs....

The Reach alone is something you have to practice, then theres the legato part, the accuracy, the strenght, and the hardest one, the speed!
