GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ When To Move On

So I've been in the beginner's section awhile and I've enjoyed it. I know the scale although I can't play them too fast without messing up (like 1/8ths on 80bpm). I'm just not sure if that's enough speed to move on or not. I know it will build as I go. Just wanted to see everyone else's opinion since I'm getting bored (I'm a perfectionist though).

I'm going to look at some legato lessons by Pavel since I need to practice my pulloffs. I use a metronome for pretty much everything now and that practice schedule lesson help enlighten me on the concepts of warming up and not hurting yourself.

Consequently, I think it would be a good idea to put something like that up in the beginner's section along with a bunch of do's and don'ts. I know I've hurt my wrist (not badly, just strained) from playing too much, too fast, and with bad form.

I think personally you should go for it. It wont hurt you, and may even help you. But the question is. Do you think your ready for it? Its fun biggrin.gif

I am still a complete noob but I persionally found it much too boring to try and stick to just one thing at the start so I just work on a bunch of different lessons that I like with techniques I want to learn. I am far from playing any of the lessons perfectly but atleast I stay motivated to practice everyday and notice improvements every couple of days. I know I am a complete noob but I found starting a new lesson helped me improve on the previous ones and bring my motivation up...

While is it generally considered you should practice a lesson until you can play it exactly like an instructor. At your stage in learning it is often more important to keep up your motivation and interest in your guitar.

So pick something you feel you will really enjoy, and perhaps practice your previous lesson as well but for maybe 20 mins a day or so. Or you can just go back later.

I think if you feel bored with a certain exercise/lesson its better if you move ahead and learn something new. There are many advantages with that:
1- Firstly of course you will learn new things.

2- Secondly your motivation will be high all the time.

3- Also the more you learn new things the easier it becomes to learn even newer things (which would also boost your confidence).

4- And finally when you get back to practice some old stuff which you have already learned (and you must BTW), you will find it much easier this time.
