Practice Journal

One of the most common questions I get from students and readers on my site is, “How do I become better at organizing my time in the practice room?”

When it comes to working out an efficient and productive practice routine, there are a couple of things that can really help you achieve your goals as a guitarist.

The first is keeping a practice journal, where you document what you work on each day, how fast you practice it and how long you spent on each section of your routine.

For example, if you were working on major scales, two-hand tapping licks and a Megadeth song in the practice room, your journal entry for yesterday might look like this.

Wednesday July 3rd, 2013

1. Warm up with Major Scales 3 notes per string, 15 minutes from 60 to 150 BPM in 8th notes.

2. Two-Hand Tapping exercise on 1st and 2nd strings from Paul Gilbert lesson, 30 minutes from 50 to 120 in 16th notes

3. Working on Appetite for Destruction verse and chorus riff, 15 minutes along with recording.

4. Learned first half of Appetite solo slowly, 15 minutes and got up to 50 BPM with the metronome

Reflection - Happy with the Megadeth song, got further on the solo than I thought, but my tapping took longer than I had wanted so I need to be more efficient with that part of my practice routine.

Goals for Tomorrow - Finish Megadeth solo, play whole track minus solo along with recording at tempo, reach my tapping goal in 15 rather than 30 minutes and expand on my tempo on the major scales to hit 160 BPM comfortably.

By setting goals, and documenting them in a practice journal, you can become more efficient in the practice room, while being able to accurately follow your progress as you continue your development in the woodshed.

Tomorrow we’ll look at the other side of my answer to this question, Practice Room Topics.

Do you use a practice journal? What has helped you organize your time in the practice room? Share your thoughts below.
