What's a good metal sound?

i play heavy metal music like metallica, megadeth, etc. and i have been having such a problem lately trying to find a good sound for this genre. i have the following distortion pedals. the boss ds-1 (distortion), mt-2 (metal zone), and the digitech distortion factory pedal. i really like the metal zone pedal the most, but i can't make my notes carrying on when i solo. it's like as soon as i think i need more distortion, it becomes too much distortion and can't understand what i'm playing. my notes end after about 4-5 seconds of hitting it. i'd like them to carrying on more so i can use my whammy bar on a long note (like a kirk hammet kind of thing). so is it my amp? do i need better humbuckers? i don't know what to do. for my amp, i currently have a Marshall G5OR CD. its about 7 years old now and i have moved it around quite a bit. could it be that the amp is dying on me maybe? if so, what is a good one to get? i spend anywhere from about $300-$600. also should i get a seperate head and then cab kind of deal? or a regular all in one? if it's the humbuckers or u guys think i should get better ones, what would you suggest? and if you guys have an answer on how i should set up the amp to make the notes ring out more, please let me know. thank you so much

I have Digitech DF7 and i LOVE IT!! Best for me! Mode 5 for distortion and Digitech Digidelay to add for soloing!

As for your problem: i don't think i got it right - you play riffs with MT-2 right? so what do you do when you get to soloing? do you turn on the DF7? Because if you do - than you get the noise you are talking about.
If you have 2 distortoin pedals turned on at the same time than you must try to do the following: MT2 is for riffs - so you set the sound you like, if you want to add extra distortion for solo than set the DF7 to options you like BUT you must make it LOW GAIN.

I had the same thing a few years ago - i had 2 distortions set to high gain and turned on at the same time and i got a mess!!! so now i only have DF7 and Delay - perfect for me!

Hope i helped at least a bit.
Can you please describe what you do when going into solo? Do you turn your second pedal on?

P.S. just to share some experience - there is no predefined GOOD METAL SOUND - your sound is part of you - so every person plays on the sound he likes - don't go after "metallica sound" or "Malmsteen sound" - just find the sound you like! I found it with DF7 (you also have it) it also depends on your amp but main thing is - sit with your pedals and amp and play around to find the sweetest sound for you!
Btw. Metallica has tone of equipment back there, EMG pickups, MesaBoogies - so you can only find the sound similar to their.

Short sustain could mean something is wrong with your guitar, try getting it set up by a professional guitar tech.

Was it always like that? Are your strings worn out?
Do like this, hit a string... for how long does it vibrate (never mind the amp at this time)? If it vibrates longer than you have a sound in your amp you should look into the possibility of that it's the pu's that doesn't pick up the vibrations. Perhaps you have to lower the strings closer to the pu's and/or rise the pu's up a bit.

I don't know the model, is it a tube amp? Worn out tubes?

If putting the strings closer to the pu's doesn't help I suggest, like RIP Dime did, that you bring the guitar and amp to a store and try your gear with a different guitar and amp to find out what fails.

Not even the slightest vibration after 4 sec?
Do you hit an open string or do you fret it?

Could be that you put your fingers wrong when fretting, the finger should not be in the middle of the fret but just close to ther metal band. If you put your finger in the middle f ex it will die a lot sooner.

What's the distance between the strings ans the pickups? I think Seymour Duncan would put it to 1/16'th of an inch or 1,6 mm on a LP, I saw that in a video. Measure when pressing the E-strings down on the last fret. Correct me if I'm wrong on those measures!
