I only have one record of his when he was in Dire Straits. Brothers in arms, a great record. A cool song on another record is "Sultans of Swing". That's all I know about him so I'm not a big fan really.

Check out Dire Straits from the early days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dire_Straits
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Knopfler

Of course people argue about this, but these are my favorites. Check them out:
Dire Straits 1978.
Making Movies 1980.
Brothers in Arms. 1985.

I love his style laugh.gif . My master of classic guitar, many years ago, said to me that the silence is much important in a song and I think that Knopfler give to us a good example of that (listen private investigation) wink.gif

1- You can NOT live and play guitar without knowing Mark Knopfler !!! You don't deserve to walk on this planet, you insignificant cockroach !!! (just kidding smile.gif)

His best stuff? Well ... almost everything !!!

But if you love the Muris "hommage" to Mark Knopfler and like his use of silence, listen to "News", "Where do you think you're going" for example. For the staccato stuffs, "Lady Writer" or "What it is".

And the most famous ones : Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, ...

But honestly, you should listen to all the Dire Straits albums, and Mark Knopfler solo ones. Nothing to throw away.

Agree totally!! "News" is an awesome lead because it fits the song prefectly. Knopfler has an amazing tone. I'm a big fan as you can tell from my Avatar. biggrin.gif He's also a great song writer/producer/session musician - the whole deal.

Totally agree - Knopfler is truly one of the all time greats. There is no one else that sounds like him. You hear that about a lot of players, but honestly Knopfler is pretty much the definition of a guitarist with his own style. He's truly amazing, check out any of his records. They're all amazing. Brothers in Arms the song is the most epic song I think I've ever heard, far more epic than any power metal ballad fest, the rest of the album is great too.

Communique was the first dire straits album I knew, and there's some awesome guitar work in it but overall I'd say its not their best. Still worth picking up though ... even though it may not be their "best" work critically it's still perhaps my favorite record of theirs.

Knopfler is unique because we can recognize his songs with the first notes BUT he has a wide range of different song style.

Even if i love them, Angus Young and Slash for example have their typical sound but this is always more or less the same riffs.

Try to listen Money for Nothing, Once upon a time in the west, Single Handed Sailor, Walk of life, Brother in arms. It is very different but sounds typically as a Mark Knopfler masterpiece.

And he is unique too because he is not only an exceptionnal guitar player but a very good songwriter and compositor. And last but not least, he is not the rock star style guitar hero. His life is around music and guitar, not celebrity and business.

His only flaw ? Once, he played a concert with a red bandana et red shoes. It was 80s' style ... cool.gif

Mark did a CD with Chet Atkins, called "Neck To Neck",... I think thats the name of it. I only heard a few tracks on it, but what I did hear, I really enjoyed. You might want to check that out too. I know Amazon will have one, if they are still in print.
Just checked Amazon, they do have it. It came out in Sept. of 1990. Enjoy.

Saw Mark a few years ago do an 'un-announced'/no publicity gig in the NE a few years ago with a couple of local players. He was amazing - great musician and great to see someone of his stature in a small venue. I also Dire Straits many years ago when they were still very much a pub circuit band before they hit the big time - even then it was clear that he (and they) were destined for something big.

Have to say that I've seen a lot of 'play like' Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler - and also SRV ones - and Muris' have been to date by far the best. He nails the technique and the tone and the whole vibe really well.

Cheers,
Tony

I saw Mark Knopfler at Paris/Bercy, it was my very first concert of my life (yes i'm late).

It was one of my best moment in my life, really. It was pure magic.

He played some Dire Straits classical too (most of the musician were former Dire Straits).
