I was reading a bit (Somehow started on Within Temptation) and ended up in Swedish History! And ran across the idea that the GOTHS (Eastern Germanic Tribes) were directly related to the GOTS/GUTS which are the people of Southern Sweden and specifically the little bitty island of GOTLAND. Here is a snipped ----

"The Gutasaga contains legends of how the island was settled by Þieluar and populated by his descendants. It also tells that a third of the population had to emigrate and settle in southern Europe, a tradition associated with the migration of the Goths, whose name has the same origin as Gutes, the native name of the people of the island. It later tells that the Gutes voluntarily submitted to the king of Sweden and asserts that the submission was based on mutual agreement, and notes the duties and obligations of the Swedish King and Bishop in relationship to Gotland. It is therefore not only an effort to write down the history of Gotland, but also an effort to assert Gotland's independence from Sweden."

Also related are the GEATS (Which I first heard about reading BEOWULF) which are also folks in Southern Sweden. So from this tiny little Island in the Baltic, this group went to to forge a path and a cultural identity through a big swath of Europe that ended up going face to face (with help) with the Romans who were the Superpower of the day. From small seeds come great trees eh?

Any Swedes here @ GMC familiar with any of this?

Todd

Awesome story! I didn't know all this info... there are some Swedish people living in Argentina but the most popular one is this girl called Alexandra Larsson that was known as "the Swedish" (la sueca) and become a TV phenomenon because how good she looks and how she plays football... biggrin.gif
