QUOTE (jer @ Jan 26 2009, 02:05 PM) *
I squeezed this out before work this morning.

I used the original song as a backing. I am ont he right, the backing is on the left. Very easy to hear me over it this way. I'm a touch louder than the backing too.

I'm pleased. This is the first session I played it up to speed since I started. All of a sudden its possible!!!!! I did about 9x thru this morning. This was the last one.

Not perfect, but ya know? NOT BAD EITHER!

I'm pleased.

Tonight I'll do the strumming one as a final. As well as the string skipping exercise. Thats coming along well. Since its used as a warmup I havent been video-ing it.

Honestly I dont see myself getting the AIC lesson up to speed this week. But I want to keep going on it.

Heheheheh! I hate to say this (no I dont smile.gif ) but havent I told you? Playing slow is the only key to success and suddenly BAM! you can play it!!! Your take is great, just one little addendum you should widen and slow down your vibratos a little bit thats all.

Keep up this way and you'll nail AIC lesson aswell smile.gif

Great buddy that is wonderful! laugh.gif

I know. And as I keep playing it (even though we are done with it here) I will. This time was just about playing it at speed. Next time will be about playing it at speed and cleaning it up more. Then playing it at speed, cleanly, with wider vibratos.

Baby steps.

This is how I am practicing the AIC solo too. I just keep doing it and doing it and doing it and doing it. Weird how it sounds mediocre at best over and over and over and then all of a sudden it pops and sounds good. You'd think you'd see a steady incline. Not true in my case. Its like BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD GOOD.

I'll take a coffee.

Be there in what? 15 hours by plane?

Tonight - my final take of the strumming/arpeggios lesson and my final take of the string skipping exercise. I'll be working on the AIC lesson too.

However, going forward I'll still be playing the string skipping exercise as a warmup. And none of these lessons are getting shelved. I'll play them from time to time to stay sharp on them.

Here we go.

String skipping - this isnt very good. And honestly I play it much better. I'm not sure what happened here.

Strumming/Arpeggios - Ehhhhhhh. This is at 100bpm. The target speed. First session I ever did that in. Not real good. I really have a harder timeplaying this on my ESP. The neck is far narrower down there than on the Jackson....

AIC Style - This didnt go very well at all. And to be honest I'm not at all surprised. I'm just not in the mood to play tonight. This solo is just very hard for me. I did add on another bar though. This is all at 75%. And very sloppy and inconsistant. This one is gonna take a few weekd. Probably 10 with the other stuff on my plate too.

I tried Losfer Words and was messing it up from the word go. So I didnt bother.

I'm not down on myself, I'm just not psyched to play tonight. And it shows. Plus the AIC solo I find very hard.

Hey Jeremy,

All is going better IMO, you nearly nailed Strumming exercise, not a big problem in string skipping errors are normal I dont know if you have noticed but you play it very fast. Its sometimes difficult to notice your improvement as you play these exercises everyday biggrin.gif You may check your videos from previous week. All will get better I am sure of this. You play AIC solo right, it is only a matter of time before you play it totally without mistakes, after you achived doing this, you'll build speed. So everything looks just fine. We will possibly dump Sanitorium solo in shelf, so all I want is just a big final video of sanitorium solo tonight if its possible.

Keep this up, you'll get better mate!

Cheers smile.gif

I thought we were done with Sanitarium yesterday. I'll do another one tonight.

Is how I did the last one ok? Playing with the original mp3? Panning it L/R like that?

In addition to the Sanitarium question, what do you want me to have on my agenda for this week? I see the next lesson in the syllabus is posted. Alternate Picking Thirds.

Here is what I have so far, let me know what to adjust and add. Also, an exercises like the alt picking 3rds one is best for me if broken up into chunks. What do you recommend my 1st goal for that one be?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Practice Agenda Week 3 MTP

70min per session - Minimum of 6 times per week.

WARMUP 10min
*Can's SI string skipping exercise
*Finger Independence
*Strumming/Arpeggio Exercise

30min Alice In Chains Style Lesson
*current goal = rhythm part at 100%
solo at 75%

30min Losfer Words
*Goal 75% without flaws. Then speed it up.

Record 2nd Sanitarium Final

-------------------------------------------------------------------

He he its great you are willing to do new exercises, but you still got losfer and aic to nail, and we yet to complete AIC lesson, we will do the alternate picking thirds in 2 days, just give losfer 2 days more biggrin.gif

If you wish I can give you the schedule of the new week but I really dont recommend you to work on any of it.

Last Sanitorium video was great, but you have to repeat your success for this to be a real success. That is why I want you to give it 1 more shot ok?

Opeth? Who asked you!?!?

Haha! Just kidding man.

No prob, I thought we had to keep up with the syllabus. If we've got the freedom to deviate then so be it!

Works for me.

Losfer Words - Thats going to take a while to get up to speed. I'll keep on it though.

Sanitarium - I'll post another winner tonight. Then we can move past that one.

AIC - Getting that to speed will take a LOT longer. Longer than this month long pilot program is running. I'll be working on it some more and try to get through the whole solo at 75%

No worries here. I just need to be realsitic with the times this will take. I wish I could get in 2 sessions a day. But I have this pesky job.... And you can only get so much learning done in one sitting before your brain shuts off and you need to sleep on it.

MTP Training Program for Phase 3

i. New Song: Iron Maiden - The Trooper and Both Solos of this song

Target: Develop trills, hammer on pull off, some rock cliches, Fast pentatonic runs, bends, combining rhythme and melodic content.

Notes: Why playing a tune from Iron Maiden again? Besides the fact that we love iron maiden both of us, Maiden is an awesome bridge between rhythmic and melodic content. Besides solos are fast but relatively easy, themes are lovely and catchy. Songs contain a lot of repetitions so while playing a song, you have to virtually play a lick lots of times and in the end you have no choice but to nail it eventually smile.gif

ii. New exercise: Muris Varajic - Jumping Around Beginner or Intermediate

Target: Develop speedy transitions between various positions on fretboard. And all in all it is an exercise by Muris which will contain different creative approaches and unusual difficulties. We will have fun smile.gif

iii. New Syllabus Recommendation Exercise: Tantarella Rock or Slow Pentatonics

Target: Introduction to a new solo, new solos introduce new problem areas, so you can gain new abilities and develop further. For this week playing 20 secs of the exercise of choice at original speed.

Notes: It is essential to chose the one you like, and you think you will work on while having more fun.

iv. Developping Speed: Iron Maiden Losfer Words, Alice in Chains Exercise

Target: Play this instrumental song with original speed. Our first priority is completing Losfer, and with time AIC will also reach its original speed.

Notes: We will continue on these continously, our first priority is to complete Losfer Words, then we will play at original speed and flawlessly near the end of the 4th week.

v. New Instrumental Song: Metallica - Call of Cthulu

Target: Get familiar with the riffs of this tune, accomplishing to play it to the metronome. It contains strumming, arpeggios, rhythmic licks, melodies, solo, and good timing. We hope to get a half of this song done near the end of the 4th week.

Notes: This week, we will only memorize the song structure and fingering / fret positions of this song. That song will replace our arpeggio/Strumming exercise once that is completed.

vi. Theory

Target: Learn modes and practical use of Major/Minor/Modal Scales determining the key of a progression and choosing available scales and scale patterns for improvisation.

I definitely need feedback about this program. Dont let it become a source of intimidation for you. You are able to overcome all of this before the end of 4th week that is for sure. Baby steps as you previously mentioned, inch by inch we will conquer all this exercises. And we will have fun too.

I am waiting for your comments about this ok mate?

Later smile.gif

Can laugh.gif

This stuff takes us from the start of week 3 til when?

Next week? = NO WAY.

Even over the next 2 weeks that sounds like far more than what I can accomplish. What I need from you is how to break this down into maneageable chunks. Like my agenda is. What am I working on for my 1st session? Warmup for 10min then what?

Looking at all of it like that its too much.

Let me know what I can be doing when I am away from the guitar too. I have time then as well.

details follow:

i - heck YEAH!!!! This is my all time favorite Iron Maiden tune. I cannot play it. Its always been very intimidating.

ii - the intermediate one of these scares the heck out of me. Lets say beginner here. I'll tackle the intermediate one later....

iii - Tantarella Rock - this looks too fun.

iv - gotcha

v - gotcha

vi - what does this entail? Just book work? Discussions? Question and answer stuff? Will I need a guitar? If not I can do this kind of thing during the day. I need more details here.

i. He he he I knew you would like it!
ii. It is done, we will work on the beginner one, if you succeed too quickly we will switch to the other.
iii. Yeah me too I liked that, but just didnt wanted to make all the choices for you. That is fun to play
vi. We will do some Q&A and some theory work, mostly things you wont need your guitar to study, that is for evalute the wasted time (mostly at work if you have some time laugh.gif ) And some little applications (like little improvisations) that you will mostly do the mind work, using easy licks in your arsenal(not like exercising)

There is no definite ending time, these exercises consist the mainstream of your workload here. If you happen to have some difficulties about specific topics, I may suggest you some "point strike" exercises too.

for vi. you'll see when we are going to start to work with it, so dont be confused about this subject, it will be easier than you possibly think.

I hope thats ok bro smile.gif

Cheers!
