Playing with a real drummer is something that many players today just don't get to do. I was lucky and got to play with several great drummers including Steve Flynn from Atheist. Playing with a real drummer is a great way to get better at everything. Your sense of timing, rythm, improvisation, etc. I'd suggest everyone try to play with a live drummer if at all possible.
But yeah, it's also important to know at least how to work with a metronome as it's a great tool to let you really focus in on your sense of internal time. Developing time as an instinct is crucial in becoming a balanced player imho
