I think it is !

With the blue note you can do some cool AP shred

Example :

This is one of my favourite licks, its in the Eminor pentatonic blues scale

Played as 6 notes per beat at 150 bpm

E---------------------------------------------12---|
B-------------12-----------------------------------|
G-12-14-15-------15--14---12--14--15---------| repeat

Blues will help your phrasing a whole lot. I don't like "pure shred" generally, fast runs with cool phrasing in between really works for me smile.gif

And learning some blues lessons has helped me with that i guess, but coming up with my own phrasing licks was better.

It also fun doing rusty cooley style 3 note per string blues pentatonic stuff. Which is infact easier then 3 note per string pentatonic stuff cause you need to make smaller stretches biggrin.gif And they sound wild! laugh.gif

Edit: Shred Blues Metal ftw xD

No probs laugh.gif

I think that's my favourite and most used lick, and you can use it in almost any context biggrin.gif

Here's a nice ending for the lick:
This part doesn't need to be played fast biggrin.gif

E|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
B|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
G|12----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D|------14--12-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A|-----------------14-13-12-b10-(small bend down here like 1/2 step bend)---------------------------
E|-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------12--10---12~~--------

That lick you showed me is very similar to one of his. And its a great blues lesson.

Yeah this lick is used a lot by many players from many difference styles. David also uses this kind of lick in his Metalhead solo if I remembered it correctly. But he plays it in A minor ( so it's played at 5-7-8) and he uses legato biggrin.gif

I'd say blues is key to shredding. Blues is all about feel and phrasing and is a great stepping stone to shredding.

Completely agree, Blues has such a large focus on phrasing and the enunciation of each note, You cant help but benefit, especially with shredding, to learn at least the basics.

Well, it's kinda strange question... Like you asked: "Is Rolls Royce good for racing?" And the answer is: "Yes it is, but it's made for a smooth drive" wink.gif
