Curious:
Whenever you tell someone you play the guitar, they always go on 'Can you play a song for me?'
What do you play them?

Arrgh! yea dont you just hate it when people do that to ya! Especially when they dont really know you and they find out you play the guitar and they go "ooh I got a guitar, I`ll go get it and you can play something for us" they appear with the oldest, nastiest, kids (i mean lil kids) sized acoustic guitar, the strings are a 1000 years old and a mile off the fretboard, they give it to you, sit down and say "go on then, play us a song!"
I usually just strum a bit of Bryan adams or Bon Jovi in that case thats after I`ve spent a while tuning the thing coz its never been in tune in its life!
But if they are at my house and its all my stuff then I`ll whack a backing track on of some description and play along with that, anything really, Joe satch etc nothing that I`ve got labelled to play to other people when they ask

In general other peoples guitars make me play crap, I end up completely uncomfortable and unable to play anything.
This is bad for guitar shops

Posted by: Hisham Dec 29 2007, 11:50 PM
you must do some folk famous songs any one heard for that and they will telling you are a good players. thats the way they are

I start with Romance and then Lagrima, which I thank Kosei for posting.
Then I play a classical arangement that I put together.
Then I play this
http://youtube.com/watch?v=37k_Ri1XxEc
then a guitar version of Piano man by Billy Joel, then some beatles songs (across the universe, yesterday, with a little help from my friends, while my guitar gently weeps)
then a jazz arrangement of LOVE by nat king cole while I sing it.
this all depends on what kind of guitar I have also. If someone hands me an ibanez I'll just do some fingertapping whatever...

yes, actually. thats pretty much all you have to do lol.
Its sad. ive played the paul gilbert lesson in front of folks before and no one cared, and then I just strummed "good riddance" by green day and all of the sudden I'm a "good guitar player"

Under the Bridge
I used to play something like Bold As Love or maybe a Cold Shot, but they were like - what is that...ignorants....

Something i think they will despise, and usually do, like Necrophagist songs, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Daylight Dies, Arch Enemy.
I think its funny to see there reaction

On one hand you want to tell them: Yes! I play the guitar!
But on the other hand you're afraid of the big question.
I'm still looking for some songs that satisfy their thirst and also show my level of guitar playing.
And I'm very glad you all understand the horridness !

If it's an older person like my grandparents ( who I played for on Christmas Eve) I'll just play some clean stuff, maybe some neoclassical stuff at the most. But if it's any one closer to my age, I'll play whatever the heck I feel like, all the way from face-melting metal to some blues; and I don't care what they think

Oh wow, everything here holds true for me also. Recently this girl came home from travelling the world, shes never in the UK for more than a couple months. She asked how my guitar practice was going, and I said yeah its going really well and that id progressed alot since we last spoke.
She asked me what songs I can play now, I said that I dont play other peoples songs and that I concentrate on learning guitar the correct way through learning techniques, theory and such and useing exercises.
She replied "oh, well I would have thought you could have played something bye now"
And that she prefers the sound of an acoustic guitar because you can play it at partys
I felt really quite insulted actually, considering the amount of time and effort I have put into my studies. Of course I didnt bother argueing. I did try to explain that the tehnical level of any of her Pop songs would take me about five minutes to pick up, and that I needed something substancial to practice daily.
Also this is the same girl who when I showed her paul gilbert she said "oh thats rubbish all he can do is play really fast
" and that she wanted to hear some teenage boy band.
So in summary, in future if people ask me if i play guitar I say no

AHHHHHHH!!!!!! GOD THAT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME *tears some hair out*
Short story: I recently was asked to teach a friend a "Paramore" song, so what I did was have her listen through the first half, then I said "ok, now hum the guitar part of the song AFTER the lyrics kick in" and she couldn't do it. My Point: pop guitar is generic, soulless, unidentifiable background noise fluff. But all of you knew that already.
