GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ What Is Exactly An Amp Head?

Posted by: coffeeman Mar 21 2008, 07:20 PM

Hi there,

I really dont know what amp heads are.

Thanks.

It's like the pre and power amp, with all the controls (treble, mid, bass, gain, etc)... essentially all the basic aspects of an amplifier, but without a speaker. You hook it up to whatever speaker you want.

Thanks guys!

Whats are the advantrages and disadvatages against a combi amp?

combo amps are smaller, but have the same power. heads, may have more controls, or better tone. (no idea if that is right)

advantages include: longer tube life (less vibrations from speakers), and the ability to hook it up to (and power) more cabinets if necessary. Playing a small gig? Go for a 2 x 12. Big theater hall or outdoors? A full stack might be your answer. Plus you can get different sounds out of angle/straight cabs. They're a little more versatile and easier to transport than a full on combo (not saying the cab is any easier but combo vs. head, head is easier).

laugh.gif this explanation is great hhah, love this head.

It is better to have a head, so you can mix different kind of cabs in order to get different sound. Also the best option is to have a rack system with separate preamp/amp sections.
