GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Muris's Lydian Phrasing Advanced?

I am getting ready to tackle this beast and was wondering if anybody has been working on this lesson? Anybody posted any takes on it? Shouldn't bee too hard

Pretty sure I can do it, except for the hybrid picking part. (Or is it called chickenpicking? I dunno.)

I tried it some months ago and was able to play most of it at nearly full speed. The most difficult part is the hybrid picking, but it's not impossible. 
Just give it a try. Sit down for some days and you will master it for sure.
Little detail: when I met Muris in Igalo, I taught him that lesson because he forgot it! You know why? Because he improvised it...

I'm working on different sections of the lesson. The first section sounds so like Vai. Isn't Muris incredible? Notice the section where he speed picks from low E to G to high E strings like it's nothing...amazing!

That lick alone is a LIFETIME of practice!! I was looking at that yesterday and I am gonna have to play that legato. My alternate picking is suspect on adjacent strings let alone SKIPPING strings!! Muris is NOT human!!
I'm really looking forward to working on this lesson though, so many cool techniques!!Monte

I had plans for working on this lesson, but I'm not very consistant in working on one lesson alone. I tend to practice a lick or two from here and there in every lesson and take a little bit from everything.
May not always be the best approach though.

Isn't this lesson just so melodic? Muris manages to stick so many incredible techniques coupled with a smooth, melodic style into 50 seconds? He just kills me...one of the best guitar players I have ever heard. That ridiculous string skipping section is one I practice slowly which I find makes it much easier to speed pick on adjacent strings. Good luck, Monte.

Have you gotten all the way through it? There are certain techniques that Muris does that there is no way I will ever be able to do like him so I just have to adapt it to what I can do and try and do the best I can. Also the hybrid picking lick at the end I will probably tap. I find hybrid picking useful for string skipping but not so much for the "close proximity" type licks. I'd love to see you do a take of this FrankW if you ever get around to it.

I'm just now attempting parts of the lesson. I typically work on a section here and there, and then move on. I like trying to incorporate certain aspects of a lesson into my own style, so I don't usually play a lesson all the way through. This lesson would be a real challenge to complete as it is. I'll work on the string skipping and tapping ideas because they sound so cool. One day when I grow up I'll be able to play like Muris.

I have a bad habit of doing the same thing. The result is I can play some cool licks but not many songs. I have mad a conscious effort this year to learns whole songs all the way through and it seems to be paying off. The great thing about GMC lessons are they are usually only a minute or so long so you can get alot of great ideas crammed into a short piece of music!! BTW, I have seen your playing and you are very good, Keep Rocking!!

Just a quick input.
There are 2 ways in practicing.
1st,going for entire lesson or music piece,no matter what.
2nd,to learn only licks you're most impressed with atm.
Both ways are fine imo,the goal is to make a progress in your playing.

I totally agree Muris. I only I am trying to learn lessons all the way through because I have so much being able to play along with the backing track. I think we all steal/borrow certain to add to our arsenal without learning whole things. Keep rockin Muris!!

I got through the rest of the Lydian Phrasing lesson today and I am really gonna have fun working on this. One question though. How in the !@!@#$# did you ever learn to alternate pick that string skipping section!!!! There is no way I'll ever be able to do that, not enough hours in the day to practice that Since you played it on a Jem I'm gonna have to play it Steve Vai style with the right hand over the neck to mute the strings Hopefully I'll have something to post in a couple of weeks, probably not full speed though

It's just practicing Monte,I did lot of skipping practicing,
probably under influence by Paul Gilbert and his old VHS instructional videos.
And yes,you WILL be able to play it sooner or later cause that is
far away from ultra heavy licks,trust me!!
Maybe you haven't worked on skipping enough and that causes you trouble right now.
On the other hand I see your legato is very good.
So,focus more on picking,give it some time,do not rush
and result will be there,no worries.

What is more difficult is very relative.
I didn't try this lesson, but I think I would go through they hybrid picking with no problem, but would stop on the speed picking...
