Hiya folks. I am currently tinkering with the parameter settings on my 10-band EQ pedal. I am trying to get all sorts of tones, but unsure of where to look to find a tone I am trying to simulate with the EQ and processor(Boss ME-70) I am using. Anybody have any suggestions on where to look perhaps? Search engines haven't been much help

It's always a matter of taste and situation. With a high gain sounds and playing on the bridge pickup You could test some middle scoop around 500 Hz and cut off above 6 Khz. If You like blues playing with low gain and neck pickup (single coil) it usually like the treble so You can find no need of using the EQ. You can also try to cut the highest freq range above 10 kHz because there is not much information about the note in there...just a clarity and crispness I used this MXR device to cut off all above 6kHz with some Marshall heads. This worked only for heavy distortion and bridge position. If I play blues I like the tone the way it is but for rock/metal I suggest to to he cut off to get rid of usless "harshy" freqs...

Ahhh..... that helps quite a bit. Now what if I was going for a punk rock tone, let's say.. like the Sex Pistols? What you suggest the EQ be set at for that?

VERY good advice from DARIUS. Above 6k with high gain can be really harsh and really NOISEY. Also, it's in the FIZZ range for certain setups where it stops being sharp and turns in to fizzy/harshness. I use high gain quite a bit and learned pretty quickly about the trouble range above 6k. It's worth taking note

Darius suggestions should also work for a Classic Punk tone. You have to do that cut of high frequencies and experiment with frequencies around 250HZ, 500HZ and 3000HZ. Using an overdrive should help you to get a sound like Sex Pistols.

Thans for the support Todd and Gabriel! Yeah...It's all about experiments cause too many factors changes - guitar, cab, speaker etc. I think cuting the high end would be the first step and then there are no further hard rules. Also remember that setting up the tone for live playing and setting up the tone for record (with drums already passed through EQ) are two different things. One of basic mistakes is trying to get the tone comparing the the mixed, mastered record, played through the hi-fi and then trying to use this set up with a live band. Everytime You play in the places smaller than the big, outdoor stage You will need some headroom for the middle frequencies. This is caused by the drums that are usually scooped in records and as an opposite - they have tons of "body" frequencies (low mid especially) and they can easily cover the guitar. So You usually need to have more middle on stage than You would probably set up for the recording

Just to verify... if I want to scoop the mids out, would I set the sliders to 0 or to -12? and to reduce the fizz and harshness, keep the 8KHz and 16KHz sliders set below +6?
