Welcome to SHRED BOOTCAMP! I'll be your Drill Instructor! And I do mean DRILL! As in a large power tool used in slasher films and Paul Gilbert concerts. Here is were you EARN THE LIVING DEATH out of your fingers and break through any speed bumps/barriers to become a MASTER CHIEF of Shred!

MISSON #1

THE MISSION

1.)Your mission is to go all the way back to the very start. The base of the mountain.

LESSON 1. http://bitly.com/gmclesson1

Which you will play SLOWWWWWWLLY, very SLOWWWLLLLYYYY until you master it at a crawl (As You'll Do With Each Mission, and focus on left hand FORM! Make it SUPER PERFECT!). Speed it up bit by bit until you feel your ready to take it to WAR (Any speed, it's up to you) Shoot a video and post it as a reply to this post. I'll then offer a constructive and brutally honest critique. Make sure you are playing to a METRONOME or some kind of click / drum track so I can hear if you are playing "IN TIME" put the video on YOUTUBE. You can leave it as "Unlisted" but not as "private" otherwise I can't see it. I'd say leave it up public to let others give you feedback! If you don't have a youtube account, GO MAKE ONE!! They are free with your Google Gmail account.

THE AFTERMATH

Upon nailing the crap out of lesson one at a speed you didn't think possible, and playing it a clean as a freshly waxed floor, you will be given your first insignia of Rank in BOOTCAMP!

Here is the link to your own PRIVATE HOUSE OF PAIN!...Er I mean.. SHRED!

Great Todd! I will practice lesson 1 for a week and I will send you a video !!

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 1 2016, 09:07 PM

Sounds like a plan smile.gif One per week would be great progress!! If one lesson takes a bit longer that's ok as well. Sometimes, I may have you go back and try again if the lesson needs a bit more work, but feel free to share preliminary vids so I can give you tips and such. Here to help!

A pop up menu will come up. In that window you just paste the last bit o the youtube link. E.G. jXDb7B68tXM which is in the share box on youtube. Just trim the rest off. Here is your vid embedded.

Now on to the Debrief!

I got a little surprise Sarge!
Got a double lesson ready (I don't know if I am allowed to do that, but you can tell me)
So above is Lesson 2 played at 85 bpm 16th notes
Below is Lesson 3 played in 120 bpm 3plets

Posted by: George Hlio Mar 13 2016, 08:16 PM

Also at the end of the section I create a riff based on the current mission, since I believe that the point of learning guitar(and any other instrument) is to be able to create your own music!
Hope you like it! smile.gif

I don't often do "doubles" but you clearly have a good command of the fundamentals that these first missions are designed to teach so you get special dispensation Soldier!!!! Let's debrief!

P.S. Nice axe there taking it down to the low B is a nice touch!!!

MEDAL OF HONOR
1.)Spot on with the muting, no extra string noise or unwanted notes. Just what you intended to play. This is exactly what I like to see.

2.)Precision, precision, precision. The key to speed! And you are playing in a very precise manner here which I like to see!!!

3.)Temp and pacing: very even and deliberate which is the point of most of these MISSSIONS and you NAILED IT!!

I like your improve as well and you kill both takes so it's impossible not to double up your level Soldier!!!

You are making great gains and the chats seem to be pushing you in a good way so keep it up!!!! Onward!

In short you just,

LEVELED UP!!!

Thanks Sarge!
Means a lot! Indeed the chat helps me a lot, since it is really enjoying, I am having fun all the time and at the same time it's a great guitar workout...It forces my mind to get comfortable with variations of an exercise and do small demos, although I am an anxious guy with those things...
You've already helped me a lot Todd! Thanks!
So MISSION 4 ahead.... smile.gif

The chats are always a big party! I LOVE doing them smile.gif Getting to jam and talk about guitar stuff, what could be better?

The best thing about it is honestly the live demos which give players the chance to perform live in front of their peers. It can feel like a lot of pressure at first, but once you get used to it, it makes playing in front of other people MUCH easier!!

You may have noticed that you can learn something new and then sometimes go to show it to somebody and it seems much harder than when you played alone. This is what chat is great for smile.gif After a while it gets much easier and when you start playing gigs or in a band, it really helps!

Hi Sarge! Here is my take on Lesson 4 at 90bpm quintuplets... As always at the end I have written a riff taking advantage of the exercise!!
Let me know what you think!

MEDAL OF HONOR

You are on a roll Soldier!!! You have this one down pat. One thing to try for on the next mission, add higher string version as well as the low string version. I like the way the low strings sound, very heavy! Also important to try the high strings to prep for lead work. Your picking is very good on this! I notice you say "QUINTUPLES" we use that term typically for meaning striking each note four times. If you are striking each note four times your speed is so fast I can't tell. Are you striking once per note or four? Either way you have the vibe of this lesson.

1.)Solid picking with precision. Not a bit of extra string noise!

2.)Rock Solid palm mute. Only the notes you want to hear are the ones played.

3.)Extra Lick!: I like the way you take the lick and make it your own!

You are moving fast through these missions and you will notice that your skills will increase as you, so keep it up!!! Well fought Soldier!!!

In short you just,

LEVELED UP!!!

Thanks Sarge!!!!
Well, I probably used the wrong expression...I meant I played 5 notes per beat, since there were 10 notes...
Next time I will use the higher strings as you said...
The great thing with your lessons is that at the beginning I start playing them very slowly and at the end of the week I see significant progress..

Also, how can I add my badge on my profile? smile.gif

Posted by: Todd Simpson Mar 22 2016, 03:21 PM

I'm going to make a screen cast to walk you through it smile.gif

here ya go smile.gif Let me know if you have questions. Start at your PROFILE page and click MY CONTROLS

Thanks Todd!
But actually I meant to put my badge on my lower left side on my profile which appears when I write to the forum!

Ahh, no problem smile.gif That's called the "SIGNATURE". So you would need to upload the graphic somewhere on the web, and then click on MY CONTROLS / EDIT SIGNATURE and put the link to the image file. Some people use photobucket.com
