Handwired Pickups, Final Project Options

Hey guys, you probably know me a little by now. As the ending project at school I'm going to develop, design and wire pickups for our electric guitars. I'm still doing some business resarch and still trying to get the info I need. I will let my "practice agenda" turn into a small blog regarding this project of mine.

Back to the business resarch: Anyone in here interested? I'm sharp when it comes to physics and math so I'm going to calculate and experiment on how different materials and mass etc. will affect the output and sound. My goal is to wire the pickup to fit your demands.

So all I want from you is a simple reply stating that you're interested in that kind of service (if you are ofc.). If anyone has ANY extra suggestions at all, any problem with earlier pickups that you'd like to share, please send me a message or two.

Please only post if you're interested in this kind of a pickup, the more accurate this is, the less money and time I have to waste and the sooner I can begin selling and delivering. I'd also like to add that this post was not ment as advertising, it's ment as research.

Hey Oxac

I'm interrested in pickups

I'm getting a used Fender Stratocaster (USA Model) in a few weeks, with HH configuration.
It's got the Bareknuckle Nailbomb pickups in it (Which is awesome!), but I already got them in my Gibson so it would be cool to change them into something else

So, what do I need to do, and what are you going to do?

Great pickups in that one! So, I'm still just in the basic (gathering knowledge stage). I just want to see the level of interest, potential buyers ya know. When I'm done reading up on the theory I'm going to start the experiments. When I'm done with that I'm going to start developing covers and such and then when I've got let's say 3 or 4 different models, I'm going to adjust the wiring to fit the taste of the buyer. So what you could do is to check my practice agenda for updates, expect one to come soon and then I'll post whenever I climb up one step on the ladder. I'll do both singlecoil and Hum's.

Maybe you know it already, but last night i found this page and i thought there are some interesting information in there.
It's basically a shop, but for each product you can find some detailed informations .. about wiring as well. They even explain how to build a simple wiring machine. Everything is a bit hidden on the page, but i'm sure you will find your way ..

I think it could be fun to wire your own pickups, my conclusion was that the experimental phase will be kind of expensive, as the coil wire is not cheap and i doubt it can be used multiple times ... maybe i'm wrong.

If you think one day you have a good pickup developed, i would be open to test or buy one, but of course it needs to have a reasonable price. I will follow your agenda about your progress ... good luck

Seems that handwound humbuckers are much harder to get perfect, so we'll have to see what I can come up with.

Would those Bareknuckle Nailbombs be good in my Ibanez RG Audiopaal?? Because i was thinking to have a Dimarzio Paf Joe and a Breed placed in my RG 320 and something else like those Dimarzio Evolution pickups in my RG limited edition but i really like the sound of those Nailbombs what do you think?

I was at my fathers home this evening and I was asking his opinion on guitar pickups.. In particular his views on the active and passive kind. (Theoretically he prefers active hands down.. But don't ask me why, because his technical explanations went a little over my head.) Ironically, he has no guitar playing experience whatsoever. Just a sound, professional knowledge as he is a long served engineer, working with Tv, Hi-fi and audio etc. He principally knows the ins and outs of electric guitar pickups, but has never worked in that specific field. He did however build his own, hand wound, guitar pickups back in the mid sixties as part of his engineering course. I will gladly put any question you may have forward to him. Not knowing anything on the subject myself, I am a little unclear as to what you are trying to find out.. Is it just the basic principle of building you're own electric guitar pickup, or something more specific. I cant guarantee any help, but let me know and I will answer you back soon.
