i have improved my skills a lot the past few month and last week my RL music school told us to decide what song do we want to perform on the end of the year show, i chose toxicity which is way way below my skill lvl, if you nkow the song it consists of 5 power chords and an easy 5th chord arpeggio(i dont know how else to describe that riff in the houses) anyways i thoght i would have more fun just headbanging to a cool and easy song and not worry about practicing a ton of time or worrying about messing up the song, but suddenly i feel like a bit of a coward for choosing the super easy path, what do you think maybe i should write a solo to the song so i can show and develop my skills or would you just stay with the original?

I think it is better to play a song you are comfortable with.

It's probably better to choose an easy song and be totally comfortable. But I on the other hand, would probably take something that's exacty at the edge of my skills, but that's no safe way to go at all, trust me laugh.gif Maybe take something that ain't easy but still easy enough for you to headbang along wink.gif Cause that's part of the show too biggrin.gif cool.gif But have you already chosen the song and can't change your mind? If so.. yeah, go for it, make a solo! Make it more than just a cover, be a little original smile.gif

Good choice, I think you should just play and enjoy if it's one of your first gigs.

There's nothing wrong with going for a song you know well and is comfortable with.

Nothing wrong with staying with the original, but if you do want to write a solo to show off a bit, I suggest you really nail the solo down, and feel very comfortable with it. This will be much more effective for the audience (that often doesn't really know a lot about playing guitar and making music, just wants to hear something cool). cheers mate smile.gif

i thoght about making a solo and it sounds like a cool way to add a little interest to the song but the problom is i have no idea how to make a nu metal solo or a system style solo, theres only 1 guitar solo in the entire album, any ideas where should i start?

Nothing wrong with your song choice at all.
If there is something more challenging you think you can nail then go for it.
In my opinion going for head banging in a music exam might not get the marks tongue.gif ....Depends on the examiner i suppose. haha
In a music exam you going to get marked on performance ( how you play, not head bang smile.gif )
Technicality etc. If it's just a staight performance playing an energetic rock out song is really not a bad idea.
Whatever you choose just make sure you can play it to the best of your ability and you're comfortable.

I agree with Lian here. It really comes down to who will grade your performance. If we put everything aside it comes down to this - you should definitely enjoy music you play ! If you want to go for more challenging and advance things (songs out of your current reach), I strongly advise you to do so ! On the other side, if you don't have enough time to nail everything down before performance, it is much better to stick with something you are more familiar with and have more in your fingers.

Good luck with the performance and have fun !

Just experiement and analyze the stuff other great bands do, try to do something similar, but insert couple of ideas of your own. If it is too fast - simplify, but keep it structured and cool to listen! smile.gif

You made a very good choice! Its always better to play a cool and easy song, then to struggle with a hard one. Often those easy songs are hit songs and audience will love it. Its your job to make a good show so I think you made a really good and smart choice! smile.gif
