Comfortably Numb Improvisation Options

Greetings GMC. I have been watching the various videos on this website for about a month now, and have finally made a forum account, so this is my first post.

I have recorded a video (with not the best sound quality) of me doing an unplanned improvisation to the second solo in Comfortably Numb, first take; no "I didn't like that bit so I'm going to record it again". What I would really appreciate is some constructive criticism stating what was good and bad, and what I should focus on.

For those of you who are interested, I'm using a Squier Stratocaster (a Korean CN model, so I'm unsure of the date) and Guitar Rig 2 (awesome bit of software) on the Fusion Lead setting.

Hey Darfuria, that was pretty cool

You built some cool bluesy ideas over the track- my only two suggestions would be to try and explore other areas of the neck when soloing, and to work on your vibrato a bit
...i say this because you seemed to only be comfortable with the one pattern and occasionally ventured out, IMO it would make a more intersting lead if you could move around using several different octaves instead of just the first B minor pentatonic box.

Also your vibrato technique looked a little "stiff" for lack of a better word. My vibrato used to really suck because i was literally shaking my fingers around on the string- and it lacked control and interest. When it "clicked" and i started using my wrist more for vibrato (like i was seeing my favourite players on youtube do) my playing just got waaay cooler

Here's a cool vibrato lesson by Marcus- video 1 has a cool explanation of getting a controlled vibrato. Helped me a bunch that's for sure.

Thanks for your feedback all. You're right about the vibrato. I wouldn't say it felt stiff, but I know that I'm not doing it correctly.

I sat down last night and started jamming to a backing track in Dm, and I was looking at a run that Steve Vai plays in For the Love of God where he's playing the Em pentatonic on the 12th fret, and he does this slide down to the 8th on the B string, and then plays down a pentatonic shape there (or thereabouts). It occured to me that this is just the Em pentatonic in another position, so I went about playing it in different keys, and doing this expanded the range of the neck I can cover. Okay, so it's only one more position, but actually expanding to that feels like I have made a lot of progress musically, and it has certainly improved what I can do when improvising.
