GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Kemper Floor Unit

Posted by: Todd Simpson Jan 18 2015, 08:38 PM

KEMPER is releasing a floor control unit for their spiff KEMPER amp profiler. Looks cool smile.gif

The BAD NEWS?

It's going to cost about $1,000 U.S.!!!! EGAD!!!

It looks great, and I'm sure it will work great, but wow. Nearly a grand just for a floor controller? That's just a bit insane me thinks? When you could just use the Behringer FCP for a couple hundred bux brand new with the custom eprom chip pre installed?

One thing that seems BRILLIANT that I found recently is a KEMPER SOFTWARE EDITOR!!! Now this is freaking spiff smile.gif Use your laptop or tablet I'm guessing (assuming using it as a desktop monitor extension) to control your kemper. Something like this should honestly come bundled with the kemper. Does anyone know if any software control comes with the kemper? For the price is seems like it should? Even the 11 rack has a free software editor smile.gif

$599 ain't cheap, but it's line with the price for the FA mfc101. And if the mfc101 is any indication, it should quite popular.

You get a Kemper, that's it, I want to say in the end of 2014, we got a rig manager. It doesn't do anything but I think let you rename profiles and delete/add them. That is as far as it goes.

The rig manager lets you load any of the 5000+ profiles in your profiler instantaneously. Ie search for "Sad but true", double click and you're home. I'd love an editor, but the Kemper even with the current eco system is incredibly powerful and versatile.

Because I am not playing live currently I have no real need for the remote control. But so far this company has done everything by the book as far as I can tell - and I have not got any indication that this will not be the case with the floor unit either. I would love to read a first review though.

But the MFC101 is has much more than this floor unit, I guess when things are proprietary you can charge what you want

This argument reminds of when the iphone came. It took people a bunch of years to understand proprietary has advantages as well, one of them being seamless hardware/software integration.

There is a KEMPER SOFTWARE EDITOR! smile.gif An enterprising guy made one! Here is the down load link.

I was a bit stunned that a third party had to create a software editor is all. AXE FX and 11 RACK both come with very handy software editing programs. Being able to tweak settings without having to actually touch the unit is quite handy IMHO smile.gif If you get a chance, download the software and let us know if it's good!

Very true smile.gif Propietary closed systems have distinct advantages. This is why you don't see wads of music creation apps on ANDROID. It's an open platform so Latency varies wildly depending on the builder. On the iphone/ipad, it was built as a media device which is why it's made it's way in to studios smile.gif

True, but the MFC101 price, at $749, is higher than the price of this new Kemper pedal board. At the same time, it seems reasonable that the Kemper price should be higher than simple midi pedal controllers like a Behringer fcb, so it seems like it's in the right range. Anyway I'm sure many people will be trying it out on thursday smile.gif. I know I will.

The kemper was priced in POUNDS not DOLLARS sadly, so it's a bit pricier sad.gif It does match the color scheme and all which is nice and it's made by the vendor of the device being controlled which is nice. But it does seem a bit pricey, especially since it's doesn't include one or two variable foot controllers (wah/volume) which comes free on the cheapie behringer unit. But let us know how it goes smile.gif

Maybe folks in england must pay an inflated price, but elsewhere it's 499 euro or 599 dollars:

I must say this sounds very appealing:

QUOTE
Direct Response Preset Switching
With the Profiler Remote Kemper have significantly accelerated the Rig switching time. What's even better: they managed to avoid the usual silent gap that happens when switching to the next sound and turn it into a smooth crossfade. In conjunction with the implicit spillover of delay and reverb the Profiler provides the smoothest sound switch transitions in the industry.

I have never enjoyed switching between channels/patches in any amp I have had, because of pop noise, silence, delay etc.

With the flexibility of a modern digital amp, switching between sounds could become an integral part of one's playing style. If only the actual switching was more musical. I think what this company is doing is very promising!

THe GAP between patches thing is something else I was a bit taken aback by on the KEMPER. Given the cost, I figured they had worked that out. The AXE FX and 11 Rack have pretty smooth transitions between patches but they still have some gap. Glad to see the foot controller helps the "gap" issue on the kemper. After a quick search, it seems the gap on the kemper makes it unsuitable for many folks to use live but better for use in the studio. KRIS: do you notice the gap?

To avoid it live, you could just use 2 UNITS and and a switcher box. Using two or more amps/rigs used to be very common for big acts. But as budgets have gotten tighter you see a lot less of it, it seems smile.gif
-------------------------------------------

PATCH CHANGE TIMES!!:
I'm going to try to find the change times for various units.

What is the patch change time for the Axe-Fx?
Preset switching time is around 20-25 ms with delay spillover off. With delay spillover on, it's around 25-30 ms.

What is the Patch Change time for the 11 RACK
?
Preset switching time is around 60 ms.

What is the Patch Change time for the KEMPER
?
Preset Switching time is around 170-200ms

*The kemper switching times are quite long by comparison but the guys at kemper are working to get the in line with the AXE/11 rack/Pod, etc.
