Hey there everyone, I took some time away from GMC but am back in business!

I've been having a lot of trouble developing phrases while improvising. I seen to be having the most problem with building off of a small idea and then circling back to it to tie it all together. I've been trying to stick to just pentatonics to minimize the confusing passing notes and other tones. I'm sure there are plenty of threads addressing this topic but I haven't found one to be specific to helping me.

Is there a common progression in building off phrases in a I IV V?

I'm sure there are basic formulas for all musicians to build off and then they can adapt their own style. I would appreciate leaving the 'you just need to feel it' comments out for now because I can't feel it for years now!

Thanks in advance!

Hey all,

I'm looking for a versatile capo. I want just ONE capo that can capo either 4 or all 6 strings. None of the capo's I've seen advertise that they can do that, although some people claim they do.

In Muris' improvisation video on youtube it looks like he's using a magnetic capo because he is sliding it around all the time. Does anyone know what kind of capo that is? Even though it doesn't look like it can be a partial capo, it's still kind of a cool idea.

THANKS!!!!

I tried to find a previous thread that addressed my issue with no luck. I, like many GMCer's am stuck trying to learn to improvise. I've been playing for many years and have achieved noteworthy speed, accuracy, and technique. I have a general understanding of theory. I'm starting with pentatonics to make it a little easier but I cannot seem to make real music.

The Question: Is there some kind of rule about improvising over chords? I understand the concepts of creating tension in the sound but I can't put it together. Is there an Am progression I should be starting with? Is there an order of techniques to approach improvising in an easier way? When is it proper to use leading tones, tensions tones, etc...

THANK YOU ALL!!!

My name is Anthony Dughman. I'm 24 years old and have been messing around with the guitar for nearly 13 years now. Living in San Francisco, CA, life is centered around work and there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything done. I'm finally getting my degree from San Francisco State University in less than 6 months. FINALLY! biggrin.gif

I'm one of those players that never really learned the guitar but could play pieces when I sat down and learned them. For example, I can play Muris's Oriental Shred with the tone control that Marcus Lavendell has. If you ask me to improvise, I'll be completely lost. I recently discovered Bill Edwards Fretboard Logic series and own all 3 books. Those books are invaluable to my knowledge bank. So now I have an understanding of the guitar and how to form chords, scales, etc... I have the technique but, I never had the knowledge. Shameful, I know. Help me get started! Cheers!!!
