I know that all you seasoned players got shoe leather think finger tips by now and could probably play for hours and not feel a thing, but of course you guys weren't born that way. I just started playing a lot more recently and have really gotten sensitive finger tips sad.gif . I want to practice every moment I can, but my finger tips aren't letting me. I have yet to bleed or develop any kind of visible sores on my finger tips, but they are definitely hurting as I type this out. Any kind of advice one could give to help recover the tips faster so I can get back to a fresh feeling practice session? Am I hurting myself more by playing when they hurt or am I just being a wimp? unsure.gif

If there sore, then its fine, but if they actually hurt, then stop. That goes for everything. If its sore, then its ok, you can go on if you want to. But the minute it actually hurts. Then just stop cus it can severly hurt you in the long run!!

Dude
11 years and counting here and still every time i practice a leson by Marcus with strong Vibrato i rip my middle finger up. smile.gif What i would do if it's really hurting take a 30 minute break and come back to the guitar, even if it's still a little sore just try to put 15min back into then take another break. If you start tearing the skin on your finger's you can put alittle bit of lotion on them to help heal faster. Also pending on the style of music you play try and go for a lighter gauge string that really helps. smile.gif

i find it dumb when people ask for this kind of advice. Do you really believe that there is a special way to heal you finger tips?

Well he wasn't exactly asking for a magical healing cream. More in the lines of whether or not he should fight through the pain or give them a break because he didn't want to make the wrong choice.
Stealth, about a week ago I posted almost the same question in another thread and was told to keep playing and I have to say it was good advice. If I had not asked I would have waited for them to heal before I started playing again because I didn't wanna make them worse. But I was told to keep playing and now about a week or so later they are all smooth and hard and I don't feel a thing.

Answer the question if you can, if not it's better to keep quite and keep dumb comments to youself.

If you get skin worn off on your fingertips just rest for a day if it feels uncomfortable, otherwise just keep playing. You'll develop "leather"-tips evetually.

I agree, making comments like the one mentioned above only adds insult to injury, no need to do it here or anywhere else for that matter.

Does it feel as if your finger tips are raw ? Like a burning feeling ? If so this is what I do. Just keep playing even if it hurts, man up and keep playing, Why do this ESJ you have no idea what your talking about and your completly retarded !

Well the reason for doing this is tolerance, Its kind of like eating enough spicey foods and eventually you build a tolerance of the heat. Anyways tongue.gif When your fingers hurt still play but dont make the practicing as intense, how bout some chords ? Just keep playing
and yeah the simple answer would have been, PRACTICE

Might I just say there is a special way to heal finger tips while trying
to learn the guitar.

Ok you may find this strange and a bit odd, though when I was first learning
to play I used to dip my fingers into white spirits, Methylated spirit, paint thinners,
paint remover what ever you want to call it.

This little trick was shown to me by my tutor at the time, a guy with some 25 years
experience as a music tutor and it works wonders. It helps to harden the skin slightly
around the fingers and makes them less sensitive.

You don't need to keep them in for like 16 hours a day, 10 minutes here
and there preferably while your not smoking!. Also dont drink the stuff...

See how you get on with it and let me know the outcome...

Hope this helps,
Barry

Particularly is you haven't washed your hands first - no knowing what you might catch blink.gif .

Slightly more seriously - won't meths etc strip the natural oils from your skin? (Hope not as I've been painting the fence yesterday and today and have meths all over me. unsure.gif )

Cheers,
Tony

Haha deadly Tony, the first Guitarist I've met whos into beauty tips! smile.gif.

I'm not sure on that one, its only really the tips of the fingers I was talking
about and for aprox 10 minutes every few days just for a month or so till
everyone gets over the usual finger problems while learning to play.

Just thought I'd mention it as it worked for me?.

Play something gentle on the fingers no bends or slides if u must better have an hour or 2 off and read Andrews theory lessons .

It's my motto - if a thing is worth doing then it's worth overdoing laugh.gif . It's the only way your man stays up on the surfboard after 14 points of stout - 12 and he'd fall off. Or as Christy might have it again, we drank some pints had a rest and then we drank some more laugh.gif .

Now beauty tips - I can certainly advise on bad haircuts/styles - I've had plenty of those laugh.gif
Cheers,
Tony
